A friend shared about 10 lbs of stingray meat off of a huge stingray he caught while surf fishing off of the Texas Gulf coast (near Galveston). I was a little afraid of eating stingray but it turned out to be the best tasting meat I’ve ever had! I slathered it in mustered, tossed it in a bag of flour seasoned with salt and pepper. My entire family loved it. Thanks again for sharing your fishing 🎣 trips.

Hey, ive filet’d a few stingrays before, and an easier way to do it is to just keep the wings on the body as you filet he meat off. It gives you quite a bit more traction and control over what’s going on. Treat the line where the filet ends and the main body begins as the backbone of a fish looked down from the top. You want to slice down until you hit the cartilage, depth naturally changes based on the size of the ray, then just slide your knife along the cartilage towards the tips of the wing. Hope my explanation makes sense! Happy hunting! God bless!
@gswift29854 жыл бұрын
I always cut the wings off though I feel it gives a better angle that cuts closer to the ribs. But I never filleted one that small.

@the503creepout73 жыл бұрын
so i've always wanted to try stingray - i hear if you prepare it right, it tastes like scallops. but i've heard from some fisherman that rays essentially urinate through their skin and it will soak into the meat if you don't clean them quickly/properly. i'd hate to catch/kill/cook a ray just to find out the meat had spoiled. do you know if there's any truth to what i've heard or have any tips?

A life hack for cleaning stingray, If you use a football needle before you cut the tail off Place it right at the base of the tail under the skin, and inflate. It blows the skin free from the meat. When I was stationed in San Diego, a Polynesian gentleman told me that if I catch a ray or skate to cut the wings off, wrap in foil with salt pepper and lemon with the skin on and throw it directly on the coals. Skin strips off and the meat slips from the cartilage. Similar to trout in the cooking process.

I find it hard to believe you've never had stingray before! The Southern ray,, the one you had,, is the best tasting of all the edible rays! Many restaurants will punch donut holes of meat, bread them, deep fry them,and sell them as scallops. Other rays may be edible, also,, but, in my experience, are much more bloody throughout the meat, and because of that, I don't think they taste very good.
@okimitchell10434 жыл бұрын
Rays are great for a survival situation but I wouldn't keep one other wise.they get huge,alot of meat.
@ncoutdooradventures61484 жыл бұрын
Yes, they can get very big! But the meat is still very good! I usually won't even keep them unless I can yield at least 15 lbs of meat. In other words, at least 24" across. I clean the meat, separate it into 2 lbs freezer bags, and put them in the freezer. So, from one ray, I can usually get 8 meals. But I don't stop there,, oh no! The skin, dried out, and cured, has a non-slip grip advantage,, good for wrapping knife handles, hammer handles, fishing rod butts, etc...

Hey I'm from the Caribbean where we would just cut the wings off and boil it in lime and salt. After it has cooked and cool down we would pick it / mince it/ shred it . The final step would be to take the meat and add it to onions sweet peppers garlic and other herbs in a pan and allow it to simmer down( do not forget the butter). It taste like crawfish/ lobster.

Many of what we know as “scallops” are actually sting ray and manta ray. They pop them out with cookie cutters to make them look like scallops. The bigger they are the more likely it’s a ray.

A lot of asian restaurants in California, cut circles into the wings of sting Ray's, bat Ray's and skates and use them as scallops. They look and taste so similar!
@benevolent20774 жыл бұрын
ofc asian restaurants do that. Asians literally eat everything. Even shit.
@michaelanderson18594 жыл бұрын
@@benevolent2077 most of the scallops you have eaten have probably been stingray. Perfectly round and no grit or sand? Probably stingray.

@@michaelanderson1859 Take 4 pounds of Ray or Shark cut out with a cookie cutter and mix in a pound of Scallops, let it sit in the fridge overnight and you have 5 pounds of Scallops to cook up.... The Ray or Shark meat will pick up the flavor of the Scallops and have a similar texture when deep fried.... Poorman's Scallops, very tasty if you know how..... Add this to Rob's tip about the lemon and salt, and bingo❗👍 Sea Scallops for days and days❗😎❗👍

Hey Robert, I am happy to see you finally tried the stingray. Not sure if you have ever tried steamed fish in Asian way. If you have never, then try steam the whole wing (including the skin and cartilage of course) of your next stingray with garlic, fermented black bean and chili pepper. I bet you're gonna love it. Cheers, keep fishing!!
@elibo0n4 жыл бұрын
Hey Rob, great video as always but you could actually use some plain vinegar in place of lemons and you can also use all purpose flour to help clump up the slime and easily remove it from the stingray.

David, they run down to temp. hold you in position. 1 is good, 2 works better. it's a quick way to anchor, and helps if your anchored in strong wind an additional way to keep precisely positioned.

Hey Rob, yeah Sting Ray is good enough to eat. Typically, you want one a little larger to get some decent fillets. We will harvest them for food when camping on the beach in Cape Sable area. When outdoors in the open air even Sail Cats taste good. Still way better than mullet. When I have filleted them I will leave the cartilage attached and take the top fillet and bottom fillet, then skin afterwards. Everyone was saying, ooh gross, except for the old Cuban Manolo, until they tasted it prepared as a rice dish. Certainly there are different qualities of fish out there, but preparing them fresh and in an appropriate recipe, we can eat quite a few varieties and enjoy fish & sharks for meals. Good fishin. Amen.

In northern Mexico, we make a stew from stingray. We cook it with shrimp. It’s called “caguamanta.” Cagua for caguama, manta for mantaraya. We were depleting the oceans of sea turtles(still are, shameful) so someone decided to see what stingray tasted like by adding the same recipe for caguama. Viola!!! Same taste!!! Very delicious eaten with corn tortillas, chiltepines(chill- teh- pee- ness)( small round Chile from Sonora)lime juice, several varieties of sea food salsas to your taste, and make memories of how delicious it is. Would love to make it for you. You’ll never be same after this stew, nothing will compare to it. I’ve eaten it in ; Hermosillo, Nogales, Agua Prieta, Rocky Point, Guaymas, Moctezuma, TucsonAz. I have the best recipe bar none. It was given to me but I tweaked it and it came out better than the recipe given to me. If you taste my recipe first, I’ll be setting the standard for you and nothing will be the same. I know I’m bragging quite a bit but it’s true, mines the best!! You can also buy dry, salted stingray for making machaca tacos. If you travel to Sonora, buy some stew, you’ll like it. Try mine and you’ll want the recipe. Sorry, homey don’t play that!!
