Stirchley to Birmingham City Centre - Full Cycle Route on NCN 5 and Quiet Streets

Welcome to Bike Routes of Brum! A channel dedicated to showing safe and quiet routes to cycle around Birmingham - inspired by the great work done by ‪@Londoncycleroutes‬
In this video, we travel from Stirchley, one of Birmingham's southern suburbs, to Chamberlain Square in the City Centre. This route mostly follows the National Cycle Network (NCN) Route 5 - also know as the Rea Valley Route.
This is a great way to trvael into the city centre in the light, but probably not a route I would recommed on dark winter nights as there is very little lighting along the first half of the route.

I've just discovered this channel - what a great idea, and so helpful for people who are a bit worried about riding around Birmingham! FYI, the digging you saw at the (Pebble Mill?) playing fields is a community garden. I grew up on Mayfield Avenue (off Pershore Rd) and our garden backed onto those playing fields - lots of exploring in the woods when I was very small - parents wouldn't allow that these days.

👍 Happy to bypass the grimmer risks of Sherlock: via Bishop up to Hurst Street, or Charles Henry's neat for Digbeth and beyond...

I'm hoping that they re-open that bit of Hurst street once the building works have finished as that would be so much nicer! Even basic wands along Sherlock would be a start... and closing Wrentham Street to through traffic

I use the Rea cycle path alot and have used the NCN5 that way before. If anyone wants to avoid the crossing at Belgrave middleway and the industrial section then the alternative route is to divert via Pebble Mill road and pick up the blue route into town that way and pick up at Kent St. I think there were/are plants to divert the NCN5 that way at some point?

Yeah the way you have suggested is a great way to avoid that! I always thought they should build a protected lane down Pershore Road and have it link up with A38 via Pebble Mill Rd. I think they have now diverted the NCN5 at the end of Cannon Hill Park and you now take a left and follow the protected route along Edgbaston/Priory Rd to the A38 blue route. I just tend to use the old route when commuting as it is a bit faster!

Ah I forgot about the new bike lane by the cricket ground, I have cycled along it too!

It would be great if you could do one from Kings Norton to Chamberlain Square using a combination of NCR 5 and the blue route.

Yes that is definitely something I can do! I'm on holiday next week but once I'm back I will film something then and get it uploaded as soon as I can! Just to give you an idea, there are two good ways to access the blue route from NCN 5 - leave Cannon hill park and go past the conservation park and up Pebble Mill Rd (as another commenter has said), or you can go to the end of Cannon Hill park and instead of going straight on, go left and there is a protected route that goes along Edgbaston/Priory Rd
