Grandmaster Ben Finegold celebrates players over 40 by touring two of Garry Kasparov's games from the legend's junior days. At 17, he met Istvan Csom; at 20, he played Lajos Portisch. Even with no apparent mistakes, Garry's opponents often lost.

I visited St. Louis to go to the CCSCSL. I was fortunate to meet many people we hear of in these videos attend this lecture. Thereafter, Ben invited me to play a blitz game in which he beat me down and joked about it/insulted me the entire way. Made my trip absolutely worth it.

I love these videos. Between Finegold and Jonathan Schrantz on this channel, and IM Fins and NM ChessNetwork on their respective channels, I have improved dramatically over the past year or so - went from a strength in the 1400 range to about an 1800 strength, USCF. Looking forward to proving that at some point soon in a tournament! Thanks, folks, for posting these up for those of us who love chess and look to improve.

Adorján didn't play for the hungarian national team in 1980. Portisch, Ribli, Sax, Csom, Pintér and Faragó did. However, Adorján was a member of the hungarian national team that has won gold medal in 1978.

19:00 How about Bf6? It stops mate on f7, and white can't take it, due to Rxd5 and the queen defends f7. I also saw Nd7, but after Rxd7 Rxd7, Qe5 Rxf7, Kxf7 Qxc8, it seems that black might have some drawing chances. Or is that just a lost endgame? Also, please correct me if I didn't find the best moves, but as far as I can tell, this might actually be the best chance black has. The 3 connected passed pawnes could be scary, but black has an active queen, and the rook on f1 might be misplaced after a move like Qd4.

Some players reach their peak at 40 or later although lost at mid to late thirties. Karpov at 43, Anand 42, Kasparov 37/38 etc, although it varies due to many factors. This is why I say that Fischer was far from peak when he stopped. Although Fischer is responsibke for his leaving chess and Morphy also.

Position shown at 24:06 is a forced mate regardless of black's play. 1. ... Qc3 is met with Qd5+, Ke2 is the only reply, Qe4+, black must block with Qe3 then white takes the queen and completes the mate. Verified with Stockfish. Nevertheless, great lecture.
