I took my stock Jeep YJ on my first real off-roading adventure through Charlie's Creek near Clayton, Ga.
It was an amazingly fun and challenging trail. We had so much fun hitting the deep mud and water crossings.

As someone who also offroads in a stock YJ it was so fun watching you do this trail - you have to be paying attention the WHOLE time or else you'll get stuck. Apparently we have mad driving skills according to other drivers but in reality we are just trying to survive XD

This was by far my favorite video that you've done. You drove that wet trail very nicely. My daily driver is a white 92', full door hardtop (232,000 mi). I still think the everything squared out hood view out the front on the YJ is my favorite. This video reminded me of doing this when my younger brother owned it before me.. Thanks.

My first 4x4 was a 94 YJ four cylinder. I bought it new. We wheeled the heck out of that thing for five years. All over northern Utah and Moab. Never had one issue with it. Mine was always on stock tires. But the best upgrade you can do is to get really good tires and run them at an appropriate pressure. Then maybe a recovery rope. After seeing the trails Stan does on the Grandpas Jeep YT channel. I firmly believe a stock YJ with great tires could and would do what he does in his MB.

First technical terms, we call holes holes, ruts are ruts, and the smile on your face we call priceless! Great trail for your first trip. If road is wide enough, straddle the ruts, don't slot car in them, clearance issues. Do you have recovery straps yet? If you do, loop one onto your front bumper have it ready to tug you out if needed. Take a change of footwear. If you have to wade water best to drive home with dry feet. Put a tape measure in by your seat, know how much ground clearance you have , then go measure a few rocks on the trail. If you have 10 inches of clearance, you can't straddle 14 inches of rock. Put one tire on rock, drive over it. And you are right, don't go alone( more fun with others). Have fun, the smiles are priceless. You're hooked.

@@SimplyMustGo how bout those Bucs, Brady wins again. Anyway, keep doing what you're doing. BFG KO is a real good all terrain tire, all purpose. Have you put swaybar disconnects on yet? With open riffs they help keep tires on the ground for better traction. Cheap upgrade. You might try taking the rear track bar off, with leaf springs, not absolutely necessary.
@SimplyMustGo
@SimplyMustGo 3 жыл бұрын
@@wesbarcus3761 I haven't done anything much to it beyond getting it mechanically right. I love the BGF KO2s that's the plan for the future, but I bought it and it had new all terrains on it already, so I decided to just let those wear down before I put new tires on and put that money to other things it needed.

@@SimplyMustGo good, smart move, wear out current tires before any major changes. As your driving gets better, Sue will grow to meet your needs. Upgrade interior if needed, little things that make her more comfy.. don't let others rush you into major changes. Your jeep, your time. Keep putting out good videos, I'll keep watching and so will others.

Hey Matt, what a really fun video to watch. I’m heading up there this Friday. I’ve seen many Charlie Creek videos none have been this rigorous of a trail. Even though I’ve heard it’s been getting some pretty good hole and ruts of late. Can you tell me is this after you cross through the creek and how long is the trail. I’ll be in a JK 3” lift on 35’s. You thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated

Hey John! Yeah it's a fun trail and you won't have any issues on 35s if you pick good lines. I was on 31s and no lift... so... yeah you can do it! The Creek crossing at the end of the video was basically the end of the trail. It puts you back out onto a forestry road that takes you out to the main road. I would say the whole trail was about 5 miles.

This looks like an awesome trail and probably not too terribly far from me. I'm in Alabama. Cooling can become a big deal too. I'm on 30.6 inch tires. It's all good , it's still pretty hard to bottom out on most trails. The angles are still great. Angles matter more than clearance, especially approach and break over. There's basically nothing to worry about in terms of approach angle with most Wranglers... They are all insane... I'm about 35° after my modifications on my Cherokee and I'm pretty sure stock Wranglers are still better than that. I don't ever hit anything. I was pushing it stock at 29°. That was good if you go really slow but you couldn't go 5 miles an hour or so. I can go a lot faster with just the 2-in lift.

I wish I knew people that did this around here. I live about half an hour from Rabun County (I live in Macon County, NC), and every offroad gathering I've ever seen advertised around here has been Jeep only clubs. I don't own a Jeep. Well, I don't own a Jeep that can offroad anything more than a steep gravel road (I have a '77 DJ5 RWD mail truck with a gas can as a fuel tank). My offroad vehicle is a 2001 Isuzu Trooper LS, and can go anywhere. I had a 2016 4Runner SR5 at one point, and the Trooper has a much more capable 4WD system than the 4Runner had. I just want to not go by myself places. I have a few trails I mapped around here and I want to share the experience with people.

Glad you enjoyed Charlie’s Creek. Be aware that a few times in the video ya were off-roading illegally, plus that Jeep crossing at the end that need towing help didn’t look like the official crossing. This area is not an off-road park so make sure we always stay on the mail road and only cross the river at the main ford crossing.

Thanks for the comment! Unfortunately this trail has since been graded, it still has the nice water crossing but not much else, so I hear. But there are a ton of great little trails like that around that area. Look for things like Sarah’s creek in the Clayton Georgia area. I’m some people will be out on a Monday, but it’s usually only got more traffic on a weekend.

@@SimplyMustGo I gotcha, we have a modified YJ with lockers front and rear and ive been near Clayton area before and even crossed the creek there at Charlies Creek but never went on the trail at the time. When I am in that area I've only used 4x4 when I got stuck. Our Eaton Truetracs and BFG KM2s make a difference I guess. But I was just trying to get a feel for how difficulty the dirt was that day you went. If it was muddy, the video doesn't do it justice I guess because it looks almost dry in some areas. @@SimplyMustGo ah i gotcha. all good. I would probably be in 4H anyways just so I didn't embarrass myself if it was my first time haha! im sure you are a capable jeep driver but a great piece of advice my father gave me about 4x4s was: "use 2WD going in, so if you get stuck, 4x4 can get you out" which makes sense because often times, and this is for very difficult scenarios especially, using 4x4 go to somewhere can just get you deeper into trouble. After you are stuck in 4x4, you are done and need a friend haha.

The hill you didn't take at about the 12 minute mark is not a legal area. I believe it is now blocked, but when you are on the trails, be careful to not take "side trails" as more often than not, they are not legal. That is how FS roads and trails get shut down. Charlie's Creek road is an actual road and has since been graded. Please tread lightly.
@SimplyMustGo
@SimplyMustGo Жыл бұрын
You are correct. I found out afterwords that many of the “side trails” are private property. That club and myself were unaware at the time (I was still such a noobie that I just trusted the leaders of the trip, but have since learned that and talked with Forestry officials about helping them to put up signage to help everyone be aware and tread lightly. I know it was also graded over a year or two ago and haven’t driven it since. So I don’t know how marked the other stuff is now.

jeep got stuck in the river only cause they are breaking the rules and risking getting the trail shut down for their own greed :( dont get me wrong, I always hit the hardest line on the trail (way harder than this stuff), but it gives jeepers and offroad enthusiasts a bad name when people do what the sign next to them says *not* to do. this is why they love to permanently shut trails down.!.

I live in the mountains of NC and they have shut down almost all the trails permanently and gate the remaining national forest gravel roads during the winter due to this sort of thing. the more popular this activity gets, the more they will restrict the trails and shut shut them down. its easier for them to close it everything permanently than try to convince people to follow the rules
