Paul, great effort, one thing EVERYBODY is forgetting,,,, you own that car, it is your car to live with. When the media tests a car, they hammer the living crap out of the unit and hand back all the bits and pieces back to the manufacturer to put back together. I think a better test and way easier on the drivetrain would be a rolling start and pull through all the gears. That is more "consumer-centric" as that would help determine what the car would be like entering a freeway on ramp that is short and has a semi bearing down at you doing 75MPH!!!!

@3:30 the reason you see more torque overshoot in 4th is because the ecm is managing the overshoot in a time-dependent manner and you're plotting over RPM. Take a look at the samples - the overshoot in either gear takes roughly the same number of samples to correct (I'm assuming the dynojet samples at a constant frequency no matter the gear). Also, the turbo accelerates in fewer rpm when in 4th, so the absolute torque is a little higher.

Ran a 14.8 in my stock mk6 GTI 6mt, was a good challenge. Used to hold it at 3k rpm, have the clutch just barely engaged and handbrake pulled, would drop the handbrake and clutch and let the wheels slip through 1st and usually would hook in 2nd. It was kinda spinning is winning because as soon as you run out of front suspension extension that’s when it spins the tyres. Would recommend finding a quiet street and practicing the launch routine for a manual GTI just to get the action down and in muscle memory if you catch my drift.

I can't stand the aesthetics of the MK8 (inside & out). But I'm hyped to see how well this gen takes on power mods. I have a feeling MK8 owners will be able to break 400whp on the MK8R turbo on pump. Something that needed ethanol for the MK7's IS38. Can't wait to see more content.

Same sentiment. I absolutely loathe the car's aesthetics, but I have nothing but respect for the advancements VW has made in terms of performance. I've got a MK6 with CTS Turbo's K04-X turbo kit with a custom ecu/tcu tune and the factory fuel system is preventing me from breaking more than ~350 whp/tq. I'm looking into fueling solutions right now, but I'm not too keen on the idea of running water-methanol injection to break 400 whp.

I'd suggest going out on the street and doing some practice launches with the traction control off and familiarizing with where the sweet spot is in the rpms to get a decent launch. You'll need to slip the clutch and get the car to start moving rolling, then pop the clutch as you get off the line (this will get the car to jump forward, rather than spin off of the line). Admittedly, I currently have a DSG and it is a lot simpler. However, I previously ran a MK3 VR6 and hit a 14.6 at 95 mph in the 1/4 with a 2.3 60' on street tires on a 98 degree Fahrenheit day in the middle of August in N.C.

@whorutothink
@whorutothink 2 жыл бұрын
@@jameshaulenbeek5931 Slight typo, it was actually 14.7. I tore apart that motor in my parent's garage and replaced the timing chains, swapped the cams for Techtonic Tuning's 264/260, ground out the welds in the exhaust manifold ports and had a buddy re-weld them on the outside, installed a 42 Draft Designs test pipe, Borla cat-back exhaust, and BFI chip. Dyno'd at 172 whp/162 whtq on a mustang dyno. Also had some suspension work done (H&R springs, Bilstein HD shocks, poly motor mounts). I had big plans for that car, but unfortunately it spun a rod bearing and my neighbor ran her car down the side of it just a few months before. Ended up selling it to a friend for parts. Never got over that loss.

How many miles are on it at the time of launching? You probably also got slower times with how bad the stock clutches have been in the past. My MK7.5 R had a hard time after a few pulls and I feel it get more spongy/have softer engagement for sure after a few pulls. I’m not ballsy enough to launch my car until I get my new clutch in and go through the proper break in procedure. I bet once you take out the clutch bleeder block restricter, braided steel clutch line, and practicing where the car likes to launch, you will be able to match or beat the projected times. Keep up the awesome work Paul! I love your videos! They have helped me a lot when it comes to modding my cars and just having good laughs. I super appreciate everything you do!

No theres no launch controle on thr manual version thats why its alot slower but his 60 foot was high if he droped his two front tire pressure 25 psi his 60 foot would drop 1 or 2 but his trap increases 2 or 4 mph so he would have got 60 foot 2.4 14.6@100mph or 60 foot 2.3 14.4@102mph. The dsg declaires 13.8 because it has launch controle plus the auto puts down the power more easy.

@@Deutscheautoparts I don't think it was traction control. I think with how you dumped the clutch, the car saw wheelhop and thought "oh no you're spinning out/wrecking!" and tried to wrangle it back in with stability management/control, which can't be turned fully off according to US laws. Try slipping the clutch a little longer next time. I've done 14.0 in a friends stock MK8 GTI on this exact Rockingham Speedway track by doing that. Same tires, everything. I have a lot of drag racing experience, but he managed a 13.9 after me by doing what I showed him. From system and control theory that spike is what refered to as an overshoot in the step response. It's usually undesirable when tuning the models controller. It's likely that the models controller was tuned in 3rd gear and not 4th. That why the step response are a better. But I'm guessing that the models use dynamic coefficients. So it would be interesting to see if the car continues to do this after you're driven it for a while.

@@Jaredscott89 what do you mean? Are you saying it doesn't have a control system? I work as an embedded engineer but not the automotive industry. I know for a fact that all these cars use a close loop feedback system so it has to have a controller that correct the plant model. If I was to categorize that curve using control theory that part of the curve is commonly referred to as overshoot. Generally it's undesirable in most control systems, I'm not sure if the engineers did this on purpose though. Regardless it is interesting.

Well for what it's worth, my 2017 6 speed manual with a unitronic stage 1+ ran a 14.7 / 101 for a couple of runs but only because I was spinning like crazy (no LSD). My best run was when I bogged it off the line where it ran a 14.1 / 103. That Mk 8 should be high 13s easy.

I did mid to high 13s in my 2015 Focus ST with just bolt ons and a tune with no lsd. I think the mk7 and mk8 is definitely more tunable with a dsg especially but I was hoping this mk8 would be faster stock.

Look like Paul needs a DSG to get a good run :-) Forget 1/4 mile runs and go enjoy it on a twisty mountain road!!

His shifting was fine, although a DSG would shift faster between gears. He needs to learn how to launch the car to get it to jump off of the line, rather than bog down or spin.

The track looks a bit wet, plus those low profile wheels don't help. Nice dyno numbers tho.
