This is my thoughts about suggestions by some KZfaq channels to take pictures of anything to generate Stock photography income. What is your thoughts about it? What images do you upload to the stock agency?
@jasonlee6227

As a photographer I have taken pics of many different things. Like empty drinking glasses, champagne bottles, Western style boots, automobiles new and vintage, eyeglasses, coins, animals of various sorts, plants, furniture etc. Because they all make good subjects for photos. Also stock photo agencies need photos on everything or anything. I think a varied portfolio of pics on different subjects should be a good thing to have. You may be able to appeal to a more diverse crowd that way. That's my opinion about this.

Hey Vladimir, you definitely make a valid point. Uploading garbage is never a good use of time. But at the same time, going out and photographing places in your neighborhood can also be incredibly profitable and a good use of your time. I would certainly not consider it a waste of time or consider it mindless. Commercial photos with a lot of creativity behind them are great, but editorial-style photos or photojournalism is also valuable to many clients, especially those in the news industry. There's different uses for different types of photos. But going out there and photographing the outside of a new restaurant that just opened, or a protest happening in the city... those can have a lot of value and also require some creativity. Just my two cents. Anyway, enjoy your trip to Europe. Love Italy! :)

I wasn’t talking about good editorial content. These images can be creative and useful especially since most editorial outlets fired all their content creators. Thanks for watching.

I found this video very interesting. Vladimir makes a cogent argument. There is so much wonderful, creative photography out there; and there is an enormous amount of mindless, lack lustre photography to boot. And, of course, there is much in-between worthy of comment. Nicole Glass is right to assert the merits of being a go-getter, seizing on the opportunities when they latter present themselves. However, Vladimir, in my view, did not criticize this approach to honing one's skills. I think he was just pointing out the fact that there is room for all in Stock Photography; but only a few are able to make a living from it. Moreover, longevity will most likely reside with those who have the talent, determination, and the willingness to critique their own approaches to what makes photography a valid pursuit. My own view is that Nicole Glass takes issue with Vladimir's video when really she is only reasserting what she knows to be good advice.

That’s the best and brutally honest video on stock photography, and I believe accurate. However, if you go out with a plan, study your subject, apply good composition with marketable subjects you tend to have higher sales. However, as you said, we all have our day jobs, which I’m not planning to quit anytime soon to become a full time photographer.

Thanks Michael, yes it is brutal now. 20 years ago I was getting average stock sale around $200 in current money, it will be like $600. I checked my sales for last year and my average sale is $32. Obviously you can’t live on that income. Everything changed for photography, we are not magicians anymore. Welcome to my channel. I invite you to subscribe. Be well.

Straight message. Thanks for sharing your experience! As you said the stock agencies pay in most of cases just a few cents for photo which in turn makes very difficult / impossible to compensate the time , effort and abilities of the photographer.

It is indeed. Stock gives great practice for skills in different kinds of commercial photography without getting and dealing with clients. As a money source it is a secondary at best. I just feel it is important to tell the reality of this business to photographers. Too many talking heads on KZfaq promising unrealistic financial rewards. i invite you to browse subscribe.

My little experience (two years) in stock photography confirm what you said in this video. My real income, at the moment, is that I become a better photographer but not so much to live by stock photography. I spent lot of time to find pictures that could sell, I learned how to shot models, and some other things. The competition is very hard and my incoming is about 100$ for month, very very little, but I can turn back and see my old photos and say: what kind of crappy portfolio I had! i hope that in some years I could say same of my actual portfolio and live by stock photography (my earnings are slowly growing). Thank you for hour videos.

This is a great video, I'm actually italian but I live in sicily (it's raining here too) and i was willing to start a stock photography activity (not to call business as of now but i hope to make some income in the future), i usually shoot portraits in studio and much street photography. Right now i own a sony a7 III and a 24-70mm zeiss f4 lens, do can you suggest me some object to shoot so i can start my journey? I have the technique but i just cant choose what to shoot as in the end i think "i would not make any money out of it" i know money it's not everything but i just need some advice on some target i can then practice on shooting for stock markets. Thanks! and im really following you as "the wise stock photographer" :D have a nice trip in Rome!

Thanks Giovanni, you live in a beautiful country. Definitely my favorite. What you already doing will be a good start. People portraits and street photography you already know, just expand a little. Do portraits but in a work place or lifestyle situation always big demand, add different demographics and race and you good to go. I discussed street photography in my previous video. I invite you to subscribe. Keep in touch. Ciao.

@@Vladimiradventurephotography the thing is I would be happier if I can skip as of now the "papers" part so maybe some inanimate or something else? I asked to some friends but I didn't find anyone willing to portrait for stock images yet, anyway I'll definitely watch your street photography video, let me know if you have any other subject to suggest me that I can "play with" for stock with my equipment! I am subscribed since some time already, bell is on. I'll be in touch! Ciao!
