@Thomas, seriously? The Soviet Union failed; Socialism is a failure, and that is borne out in examples throughout history, most recently, Venezuela (but Cuba isn't far behind). Europe is not a "pale version of the Soviet Union because at their core they're capitalist societies. Yes, they are welfare states that require a huge tax burden from their citizens, but that doesn't make them Socialists or Marxists, and they're certainly not the totalitarian states the Soviet Union was. As for the US, not even close to the Soviet Union, yet, but with the entitled attitude of the younger generations (who think they know everything but don't), I can definitely see us headed in that direction.

@@1997lordofdoom it is also not true that the majority of socialists condemned the soviet union during lenin, the influence of the russian revolution was so impressive that there was a possible risk for many european countries such as france germany or italy to become bolshevik countries, during 1919-1920. Moreover, the only major critique made towards the soviet union by socialists was in 1939, when Stalin, with the pact Molotov-Ribbentrop, allied with hitler.
