We buy the kits from dynamic transmission and just drill a hole in the plastic end plug, put a drywall screw in it, and pry it out. Your idea works well too!

yes that is a better option

Good tip! I just did an ATS trans in my 04 and just replaced the cooler with a 2008/2009 6.7l that doesn’t have the bypass tube at all incase you don’t want to mess with the plug, it’s direct fit. About $140 on rock auto.

Is the 6.7 cooler bigger or better than the 5.9 cooler? Have you noticed lower temps??
@trbokmro4 күн бұрын
@@brianbvachek3219 it’s about the same dimension just doesn’t have the bypass valve / tube assembly at the top.

I couldn't get my end plug out with glue so I took a 1/4 inch extension using the big end on the plug, hammer and drove it in to plug it, now I have no more temp light or shifting out of OD, then I put the snap ring back in just in case

The plastic cap was a nightmare. Probably pointless to share as no one likes to be shared info when I offer it. I learned a few lessons when it came to trans cooling. Don't delete the TC cooler by the starter, you will regret it when it gets really cold. Also just get a Mishimoto trans cooler, and install a trans temp gauge. I double stacked the trans coolers on one of my builds, but it cost me about the same as the Mishimoto after the fittings to connect the 2. Building AN8 lines is a pain, but if you want a fitting list I have it.

The heat exchanger on the side of the block is known to fail though (this poor dude actually experienced it 1st hand & mentions it in his very next vid post), don't want to send coolant to your transmission, *especially if it's built & you paid a pretty penny for it. What happened to your truck after bypassing it, just curious? I live in the PNW & just made it through winter with it bypassed & a deep pan. Just had to let it warm up longer & was gentle on the pedal prior to normal op temps. I guess if you're gonna tow &/or be rough on the tranny right after startup, probably gonna be a different adventure. P.S. My factory trans lines finally sprung a leak, right where the crimp is, coming off the cooler. Going -8 lines myself now; I got all the fittings but what are the 2 lengths of hose you cut? (My heat exch. is bypassed & will be fully removed while installing the -8 lines, so if yours isn't, the measurements obviously won't be apples to apples).

@@_astralxinfluenced_2799My trans coolers have not failed me on any of my builds so far. The main issue I had bypassing the cooler was when it was cold the shifts would be harsh until the trans fluid got warm. Takes a lot longer to get the fluid to ideal operating temps. If you live in a cold climate a lower stall TC will not be fun to drive when it is cold.
@_astralxinfluenced_27995 ай бұрын
@@ChannelZeroOne Gotcha. Yeah, mine didn't fail either, but I've read many others' experience failure & $500 for a bypass well outweighed the potential for ruining my $7k transmission. Then I watched this guys next video where he states his failed as well (ruined his trans). For me, taking longer to warm the fluids beat destroying my transmission. Sounds like you live in a cold climate too, but my trans works fine after a short warmup, no hard shifts or abnormal operation.

my exchanger failed as well, have a rad and probably engine as well full of slush now due to trans fluid being pushed into it. I didnt drive far before I realized it so I dont think I did any damage to the trans, hoping I can just flush the fluid in it a couple times and flush the engine and radiator and run a bypass kit for the exchanger.

I have a 2004 5.9…. Why should I do this mod? What’s the purpose?
@AntonioMartinez-pr3wb10 ай бұрын
Going to have to do this my transmission got up to 230 when hauling my way up the mountain. At that temp I tried to pull over but got stuck in construction jam, started to get worried and could smell that burnt smell, I've thought about transmission cooler but will try this first, I'm a little scared to try, how it this mod doing so far? Will it need to be burped or something along those lines. Thanks
@DieselCamper10 ай бұрын
So far so good, no need to burp it and it's not terribly difficult. Just be careful not to damage the o-ring when you reinstall the plug.

I live in Oregon and it get cold in the winter. Will that affect anything? The coldest I’ve seen it is in the teens but that’s maybe a week out of the winter at most usually.
@DieselCamper11 ай бұрын
I don't think you'd want to do it in a place that gets really cold.

One more question, hope u don't mind, but would you say that this can be reversed so that later i can put it back in winter, or will it be stuck in there never to see daylight again?

lets not overlook as most everyone does, that the transmission and its fluid are best at 185-190 F. doing this delete/ changeover accomplishes absolutely nothing, except slower warm times, and a real possibility of trans damage when asking the transmission to work at high pressure on cold fluid.
@340w511 ай бұрын
not completely true most cars and trucks do not have this option and it takes very little time for fluid to reach that target temp I spent almost 30 years in the business
