I dabble in carpentry, woodworking, and gringo Mexican food. This scrap-wood joinery-only tortilla press may not be pretty, but it does the job. It is also Mark Uno. Mark Dos will come soon.

The dovetail idea is awesome! No screws need. I will add it to my projects!

I would suggest placing two dovetails next to each other rather than making one large one. It will stabilise the press better. I will make some revisions.

@@FauxtakuLounge I will make dovetails just like found on drawers or wooden boxes. Also I will use thicker boards, always keeping the wood fibers aligned with the lever, so the boards don't bend while under stress, and a longer lever either. I am getting older and I don't want to be in pain the next day I make tortillas, lol. I made a simple prototype 4 years ago and only now it's presenting small problems. It's time to correct all these little issues and make an UBER tortilla press!

@@FauxtakuLounge I have just finished the "upgrade", basically changing a small metal hinge used to hold the lever for a strong block and a 12mm aluminum axis. Also a longer lever. I didn't use dovetails, but a "U" channel on the strong block that fits the lower slab. This prevents all the pressure against the screws. I feel it's solid as a rock! Other little corrections are for the thin boards, using wooden strips as reinforcement/feet. Now the boards are plain again and will not bend when under pressure! I call it "prototype 2.0"... The next one will be made correctly. Unfortunately I am trying to reform and make changes to my house (big stuff) and I don't have too much time for woodworking. If you want the "blueprints" or some photos I can send to you. Just let me know your email address. As I didn't register the "making off", I don't thing it's a good idea to publish only the final product on KZfaq. PS: I hope you understand my cheesy english... Greetings from Brazil

I made a piece like this with scrap wood I had! I've tried everything but no matter how hard I apply the lever, the tortillas don't increase in diameter and become thick! Pure disappointment! Watching videos I saw that they only increase in diameter and become thinner with a cast iron press sold online or a press steel and metal made in house with all two heated! Do not need to do strength, use minimum force for 3-4 seconds and the heat itself facilitates the expansion of the dough and thus increasing its diameter to acceptable levels! It's something else!
