What a great video. Tons of value , great technical info . I carve primarily in antler and bone ( small items ) but have recently purchased some soapstone and will be trying that . Not quite to your scale though , lol . Beautiful carvings. Thx for the inspiration

Originally came here looking for the tools to do it by hand, because that's how I learned back in school. Didn't think I'd be stepping my game up with power tools. This is awesome, thank you so much for this.

Thank you for making this video Andrew - very well composed. I have to admit, I’ve scrupulously combed through a video or 2 to find the Neolithic Stone tools used that seem very practical!

Thanks Andrew, I will try the Makita brand, I have had so many angle grinders die on me. Never had any sanding discs either, all by hand.

Yes the Makita Brand has been quite cool for me. I mean I still go through a lot of grinders but these ones seems to hold up pretty well to the amount of work I give them.

Valuable info. Tung oil is great. Loved stone all my life but never got far enough to try. Where would one get large pieces of the stones? Terribly expensive for 1 x 3 x 3 pieces I've looked at. Your bears are fantastic.

Hi Andrew, Thanks for taking the time to show your process. I'm frustrated that I can't find decent wood in blocks of more than a few inches and would like to do some full size portraits, so I may switch to stone carving and would like to ask where you get your stone from? Is soapstone durable enough for gallery or museum display? Is it a good choice for details in a classic sense, similar to Roman, Renaissance sculpting, or artists like Bernini or Carpeaux? In other words, can you get detail work out of soapstone, like you can with marble, without the stone fragmenting or cracking off? Is there a better stone you might recommend? Thanks for you help. I will keep searching for more info online.

Yes, I used to carve mostly marble and basically used the same tools as I do for soapstone. The marble will have a bit more ware on your tools but you can use the same ones.

We have so much basalt and granite in the Pacific Northwest that it's often free. People throwing it away as they are replacing some old retaining wall or other all the time. Would this process be appropriate for such hard rock? @@Andrewgableart
@Andrewgableart
@Andrewgableart 11 ай бұрын
@@bosatsu76 I've used this process for Carving Marble which is a harder stone. It could work for basalt as well. Granite is a lot harder and may require a different technique for polishing
