The Term backing off is where the stones bed is reduced to between 100mm and 140mm on the bed to comply with moden day building regualtions

I gotta say watching you work is like watching a magician especially when you split that stone with the maul.

Excellent work! I’m still impressed that with today’s technology and machinery, there’s still folks like this earning a living by using traditional methods. Keep up the great work and be safe!

Thank you mate. Some people use croppers which is a hydraulic splitter but they aren't for me unless the stone is really tight bedded making it hard to back off

У вас камни о которых можно только мечтать, и мягкие и колятся легко. Уже в куче лежат с ровными гранями а у нас гранит такой что из тонны трудно в работу выбрать пару штук.

Fax native in exile to Scotland here, just found these videos, beautiful artistry, the knowledge of the tools and materials with that stunning hand eye coordination and no doubt much knowledge about the craft. Im looking to dress some stone and wondering about tools, unfortunately even though im well used to the accent cant quite catch the name of the type of tool for spliitting. Also im used to little sharpening stones for small blades, what do you use to get those edges, some kind of angle grinder, whetstone wheel etc? Im an absolute novice with stone but love the art on display here, definetly going to be checking out the other videos aswell.

Great explanation James! Please explain when you would use the maul instead of the pitcher? Is it just for stone that is too heavy to lift to your banker?
@the_yorkshire_stone_dresser
@the_yorkshire_stone_dresser 8 ай бұрын
Thanks Mark. Normally when the stone is too big for the banker or when I can't cut it to get two out of it. I will cover this more indepth, thank you for the idea

Thank you for watching. Have you done much backing off of stone before? They tools are hand forged and sometimes take a while to produce from R H G travis sons. If you need any advice you can always drop me a dm on Instagram or Facebook.
