Stone Pillow was a 1985 television movie, directed by George Schaefer, in which Lucille Ball, in an attempt to make a dramatic "breakout" from her years in comedy, portrayed an older homeless woman with few resources and even fewer options. The picture received rather mixed reviews, but ranked as one of the top 10 highest rated telecasts that week, and it led Ball to make one last attempt to return to her comedy roots with Life with Lucy the next year.
In an effort to understand the plight of homeless women living on the streets, young social worker, Carrie Lange (Daphne Zuniga) attempts befriending a homeless woman named Florabelle ('Lucille Ball' ). Florabelle believes Carrie is runaway and tells her to go to the homeless shelter for help. Carrie stops another woman from stealing Florabelle's cart and gains her dubious trust. So begins Carrie's education in survival on the streets of Manhattan. Florabelle begins to teach Carrie street survival skills such as when threatened act crazy-the crazier the better, drinking vinegar to toughen the feet and innards, which garbage cans are good to go through for food, and where to find places to sleep and for warmth. This movie makes an effort to investigate the plight of the homeless and what avenues can be taken to help them to help themselves.

My best friend lived on the streets for 5 years until he died in a homeless shelter. I was on the streets only 2-3 days a month for 2 years and I learned a lot from it and my friend.Carrying a bottle of water, wrapping the handle of your bag around you as you slept etc. This movie IS realistic. Also how people look down on you and treat you like you're invisible. Good movie.

This role was so excellent played by Lucille Ball that you forget that she is Lucy. But, then she said "vitamins and minerals" and I said "There is Lucy Ricardo!"

Lucy promoted the movie on talk shows, one was the Tonight Show with Joan Rivers, where she said it was set in winter but they actually filmed in summer with temps in the 90s & 100s ! with all those heavy clothes.

Luckily I never had to pick food out of garbage cans. I ate 3 times a day in a food line.It was the exact food line, The Glide Line, that was in the movie " The Pursuit of Happiness'" with Will Smith. It's in San Francisco, and the movie was shot the year I left San Francisco and moved to Kentucky. That movie is also VERY realistic since I stood and ate in that food line for 2 years. I recommend it.

A homeless woman turning down money and sending the guy in for food 🤣🤣🤣 that’s almost as funny as “I haz to go baffroom.” This is some 1980s watered down TV movie of the week shit right here.

Thanks, Brock-I know you have all the experience of being a 79-year-old television icon with immense talent, charity, and empathy trying to make some attempts at her craft before she can't anymore. YOu really know your stuff, Brock "Weak" Meeks. We treasure your insight to dis so unapologetically. I hope you have the best day!

What gets me is that they won't let her into the shop to buy a cup of coffee-- why? I've heard of "No shirt, no shoes, no service," but she looks pretty covered up, so what's the deal? Are we to take it she smells and that's why they won't allow her inside?

White Mama came out in 1980. This movie came out in 1985. Bette was offered this role first, but turned it down because she didn't want to become the stereotypical old bag lady.
