The processing of metals began the spiral down to a severely polluted world. Yes the tools are great but remember, Man used stone for millions of years and they thrived quite well. There is a lot to say about the Stone Tools man used. I frankly would like to see the return of said tools.

Honestly those are two of my favorite tools I have ever made...both work great and have and awesome feel to them.

Greenstone

I do.

This is mostly greestone, which is a metabasalt that beds all along the appalachian mountain chain. basalt works well, some quartzite can be used but is rugged to grind. Some of the tougher granite was used but is not my favorite.

+Neos Neos The ground tools are mostly greenstone from VA. The flint is English flint.

ROOTS School I guess it's greenstone then. Pretty unsuspecting name, I never would have found. We have tons of it here in Pennsylvania, but like I said, rarely is it ever large enough to work into any kind of tool.

+Neos Neos Its hard to know. Feel free to post a picture to Roots Schools facecrack page or send me a link to one. Also, this greenstone is polished from the grinding process and use. You can find river cobbles this smooth. But when freshly broken it is a lighter color of green and has much more grit. It is a metabasalt.

+204dave204 Greenstone from VA. Its a metabasalt. Awesome stuff. Basalt in general works really well, you can use some grades of quartzite, some grades of granite, some jades and serpentine complexes, and even some uncooked chert.

@William White I use granite too, keep in mind there are different types of granite, it's not all like your kitchen counter tops. In the South we have a soft granite, some call green stone (common names are often not "correct", and yet they are.... figure that one out). Best to go out to a river, etc, somewhere you can find a variety. Use a very sold quartz pecking stone, and peck away. See what stone "gives" or is able to peck away (create tiny dimples). To speed up the process buy a "ceramic tile file" from Amazon or Home Depot. You will file the tops of those dimples off, and peck again. Cross hatch file marks can be filed down as well. I have made everything from pipes, axes, to bowls from green granite. Even quartz itself can be "carved", I've seen it. What you do want to watch out for is flaws in your material, such as cracks. They will sneak up on you. Often the surface of the rock will be hide some flaws, in some cases the surface will be harder than the rest of the rock, naturally I look for a rock that is in close form already to an axe, let's say..... "preform". I started making these with just quartz, but the tile files will make it a breeze, the difficult part will be identifying flaws in a pre form before you spend 4 hours pecking away. I can finish a full grooved axe in one weekend.

Thank you for the link. Interesting. Handles look authentic from old items found to copy from. Now how to do that without modern drills and files. Totally Stone Age is what I'd like to do on a smaller scale. Sinew is another one of those things that needs to be used. A whole other video for that process I'm sure.

Yes, although I like to knapp my knives out of flint as opposed to grind them from greenstone.

As for the efficacy of stone tools...They build every home humans lived in for tens of thousands of years without being machine sharpened. Entire cultures and empires existed with this tech... it allowed for transpacific exploration and the settling of the pacific islands. It helped to build the incan, mayan, aztec, kahokia, and countless other empires.... Seems like they work for practical use to me...

I don't believe in purism. Everyone get to chose their own mission so long as their not out there lying about it! I've built things with all modern and all stone age tools and you learn different lessons. I often tell folks to make sure to try both, learn the fundamentals of how the skill works with the speed of modern tools and then do it with from the landscape or all stone age when you wan to push it.
