I lived in Arverne Rockaways, 342 Beach 56st. St. from 1951 to 1957 with my parents and 2 sisters, in the NYCHA projects. Kind of depressing life in winter, but summers were great, my mother taking us to the beach, only a half mile down the street. And my folks taking us to Rockaways Playland top, we liked that place a lot, great rides and arcades. When we moved to New Jersey, we still went back there till it closed. The Rockaways will always be a great place, hopefully some of the neighborhoods will improve, a better quality of life for the people there.

1967: best summer of my life, hanging out on Beach 35th Street with a boy named Barry. I think of him to this day.

I still love rockaway, I know its different than what it used to be but its the place that made me who I am. I am fascinated with this places history and seeing what is used to be like.

What a lovely tribute to a place I will always deem magical. If you don't look too closely, the next-to-last photo could almost be of Sal Mineo and Norma Jeane, but the final shot of the seagull shows s/he's weary of that attribution. Moreso, it's a perfect closing, the bird's heavy lids falling upon a bygone era. Thank you.

I saw that you were credited in Skip Weinstock's video, "There Used To Be a Boardwalk Here" for providing the video footage of Beach 35th St. I wanted to thank you for it since it captured my dad's famous knish store at 0:36 of Skip's video. I grew up on the Boardwalk. My dad, Jerry of Jerry's Knishes, passed away on April 23, 2018. Beach 35th Street was a the center of my family's world for so many years. Mom met dad at the bungalows in the early 50s, I was born in Far Rockaway and lived in Wavecrest, mom worked at the front counter at Jerry's Knishes while in the back dad made the knishes (from his mother's recipe). A world disappeared.

We all thank your dad for the delicious knishes we ate on boardwalk during the summer, and our belated condolences. I spent many years in the bungalows on Beach 28th and Beach 29th Street, in the 1940's, 1950's and 1960's, and Jerry's Knishes on Beach 28th Street was our favorite spot to eat on the Boardwalk. We all loved the kasha knishes and the potato knishes. My parents and grandmother and uncles also rented bungalows on Beach 28th and Beach 29th Street, and Jerry's Knishes was their favorites also (easily beating out the Tuckee Cup place.) Thanks for reviving the wonderful memories that can never be replaced.

Welp interesting seeing this. I grew up in the post housing project Era. I'm 20. What I grew up with was shame for my hometown and the housing project I lived in. Whyd yall allow it to get so fucked up in the first place. Uptown remained somewhat decent but downtown just got wrecked by abandon, drugs and criminality. Wonder if yall got paid off.

There is no "uptown" or "downtown" in the Rockaways. The western part of the peninsula (Breezy Point, Neponsit, Rockaway Park) is okay. The eastern part (Arverne, Edgmere, and Far Rockaway) are not.

You guys took it away from us - we left because of the riff raff that was moving in. Personally, I blame the mayor of NYC at the time - John Lindsey. There was no housing projects when I lived there.
