I didn't learn the lyrics to this song until about 10-years after the album came out. I listened to the song about 1,000 times before I even looked up what the meaning of it was. TOOL is a band of musicianship. The melody matters more to me than the words.

I strongly suggest after the live reaction you go to the very beginning of the Tool rabbit hole and start at the beginning with the Opiate EP….you will truly appreciate the progression and maturation of the band. It’s incredible to hear.

Even though it’s not quite as “mastered” as Ænima, it’s so damn raw and still presenting early traits that would go on to become the Tool “sound” and it’s just so damn good from start to finish

Haven’t watched this reaction yet… but this is my favorite Tool song. I don’t think it’s the BEST Tool song… but it’s special to me. I think because this is what I was listening to the moment I decided I was a fan of Tool… and they’ve been my favorite ever since.

Aw-nima :D You're doing the "right" thing not trying to digest the lyrics the first time through. It's so much better (IMO) just feeling the music, then later unravelling the lyrical depth and being blown away again. Most KZfaq lyric videos are also crap and error filled, as they are fan guesses due to lack of official source (Fear Inoculum being the first album with included lyrics), so another good choice there on your part.

Yeah, I don't want to sound like pretentious fan guy here, but there's enough going on instrumentally and lyrically in a Tool track, that its really impossible to get it all on a first, second, or third listen. Looking back, I've tended to focus on the instrumental first and hearing the vocal as sound instead of lyric. Then Ive gone back and really focused on the lyrical content, both in the message it sends and how it very intentionally works with the instrumentation.

Yeah you need to pull up the lyrics on the deep dive. Maynard is one of the best to do it when it comes to writing lyrics. It adds to the whole art of this band...yes they are vituoso musicians. Some of his lyrics for this band are pure poetry. Most often then not he always has deep message that is spoken but is felt through the music. This album and albums following the band will do most of the music then Maynard reacts and writes his lyrics to the music.

Dude… someone should have told you.. but you committed a huge sin on this song… it’s absolutely necessary and mandatory to listen to ‘Intermission’ into ‘Jimmy’ … not your fault, I’m blaming whatever so called Tool fans that didn’t clue you in… there’s a reason their albums are setup in the progression they are… it’s an experience… so also doing these “full album” listens, you kinda screwed the pooch by not doing it in order and asking if there’s anything you need to know for optimal listening pleasure from the fans who know what’s up…. I’m pumped watching all your reactions to Tool, they’re one of, if not the baddest mofos to ever rock shit… but I really wish somebody would’ve clued you in to give you the legit eargasm mindfukk spiritual orgy you deserve when listening to Tool… all good tho, you found your way to them and have been enjoying it, so that’s the main important thing….
