I needed a small set of shelves and decided to use a box shelf design. These shelves are very easy to make as long as you can cut accurate mitres. They took just over an hour to make plus glue setting time. There are no plans available as everyone will want a slightly different design.

Peter you’ve done it again. That simple trick of using a piece of stock to move the work piece toward you so you get a flat bottomed cut the whole way would’ve helped me when someone backed over my mailbox and I had to cut some half lap joints. Thanks! For this project I’d use a router though.

A router would be perfectly good but it is a little quicker to use the mitre saw for minor work like this. The router would be more accurate as far as depth of cut goes. Cheers. Peter

Thanks Peter. Again a very good video with clear instructions. I'm in a need for nice shelves in my workshop to store all the small stuff that I now keep on the tables. I'm gonna try this tape trick tomorrow.

I used Peter's technique to build my first mitred picture frame. It turned out perfectly. Unfortunately prior to adding the inner pieces I knocked it off my bench damaging one corner and snapping the frame. Peter's method is excellent, my ten thumbs not so much.

Thanks again Peter. Not being fortunate enough to have a Kapex mitre saw but lucky enough to have a Festool track saw and MFT courtesy of the Parf system. I was wondering if you would consider doing a similar video just using the track saw for this. It should be able to do the mitres . Trenching cuts and a rebate shouldn’t it? Thanks again

Interesting approach. Thank you for sharing. In Canada U would use a dado set on my table saw, but I understand that in the EU you are not permitted to do that. My second thought and what I would do in my shop in Italy is to use a router for the dados.

I was going to say (but Pat beat me to it) that you can get and use dado stacks in the EU. The biggest issue seems to be the availability of saws with a big enough arbour to take them.
@travel734
@travel734 4 жыл бұрын
Pat Mahon Thank you for the clarification. There seems to be quite a bit of misinformation out there. My Italian supplier insists that it is a violation of the electrical code, mandated by Brussels. I suppose that it is another case of blaming the EU.

How are you Mr Parfitt? Another very useful video. May I ask why you use Bessey’s uniclamp instead of the k body?
@NewBritWorkshop
@NewBritWorkshop 4 жыл бұрын
There is nothing wrong with the larger K Body clamps but for smaller stuff it is useful having the Uniklamp. They cannot apply as much pressure but that is not a problem. I am thinking of getting some more as they are so useful for smaller jobs. Peter

Hi Peter, simple and very effective. You said rebate at the start. Is that not a housing joint? You also mention MDF. What timber did you use? It doesn't look like MDF.
@NewBritWorkshop
@NewBritWorkshop 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, Rebate - put that down to age ! I have used oak veneered MDF which is 10 mm thick. It was left over from something and had been sitting around for a while. The key think is to get across to everyone how quick and easy this style of construction is - and it is very strong. Cheers. Peter

Would’t it be better to do the trenching cut on the table saw? I guess also for the mitre cuts. That gives you better dimensional control with the distance from the edge and the fence, doesn’t it? I use your tape trick all the time - excellent - appreciate all we can learn from you.
@NewBritWorkshop

@@NewBritWorkshop Hi Peter, but then you really need a Kapex or similar - I tried to trench with my old DeWalt DW707 - not easy. Still I follow your videos and really enjoy your work. I ended up buying a Kapex K-60 because you and David Stanton showing the capabilities for the larger Kapex saws. I have not regretted it a second. I also did my workbench based on you Parf guide system - excellent stuff - keep up the good work!

This is great. How would you go about making a larger version of this for workshop shelving boxes that can take moderate weight? Do you have a video that would be suitable construction that is transferable? Made some shelves following another video. Didn't go well because their method was absolute junk. They've probably fallen off the wall already. I think most of the people just watch and don't try to make themselves.
@NewBritWorkshop
@NewBritWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
I would not use this method for large shelves where a heavy weight might be expected. I have not made any videos about other methods of shelf creation but a simple method is to have a pair of sides between which you glue and screw (or Domino) the shelves. Peter
