I’ve been a student of the American Civil War for decades and although I enjoy vlogs about this era I seldom learn much. Yet yours are so well done and informative - I’ve found that you clarify things that I didn’t even realize needed clarification. Do keep up the good work. I’ve never seen a better doc about Chancellorsville. Yes it helps to already know something about this battle. But for those of us who do this is icing on the cake.

Had two relatives in different units within 200 yards of where he was shot. One was in Company B of the 37rh NC and would have been near the modern junction of the Orange Plank Road and Stuart Drive. He probably saw Jackson being carried back behind the lines. The other was a few yards north and was in the 50th Virginia. Both were wounded the next day. The North Carolina relative died in Lynchburg in June. The one in the 50th Virginia (who was from Hancock County, TN) died in 1925 but had scarring and was deaf in one ear from his injury. Kind of neat to have two so close to this event.

I am a little late to the converhere. I agree with you that the war was actually lost at Chancellorsville. The victory was too costly both in materials and the most valuable of commodities.... manpower and especially experienced manpower. The death of General Jackson was felt in the AONV for the rest of the war... the army had to be reorganized from 2 - 3 corps and forced men not experienced at corpse level command to fight. Also, the replacements may not have been the best alternatives. I have often wondered what would have happened had General Claiborne been transferred to the AONV to command a corps....

I've been bingeing the channel and everything is well made and lots of information in a very concise space and time. As I commented on the Antietam battlefield video, I have a very similar path in history, though I live in Indiana. In regards to this video, I'm amazed at how much Ellwood had changed since around 1994, when I first visited Jackson's arm. At that time, the Lacy House was private property or, at least, the public was not allowed and no trespassing signs posted everywhere. A family friend lived at the Lake of the Woods right off VA 3 smack in the middle of the Chancellorsville/Wilderness battlefields. He knew of the site and, yes it was illegal, he took me to the site. It was an awesome experience and the 2 weeks spent touring Civil War VA, Antietam, and Gettysburg was a dream come true for a kid that doesn't live near the history he loves. 😀😀😀 Again, awesome channel!!!!

Oh, I don't know about that. You might have seen the Peninsula/ Cedar Mountain Jackson where he was unprepared, sluggish, passive, obtuse in his directives, querulous with his subordinate officers and repeatedly disobeyed or ignored direct orders from Lee. He is the most overrated general officer of the war propped up by the Confederate PR machine and the post-war revisionist Virginia Lost Causers.

I always found it odd that A.P Hill and a group of horsemen stayed behind Jackson's group, and it was Jackson and not Hill scouting out beyond the Lines. Jackson has such little confidence in Hill he did not even brother to send Hill on the Scouting mission. And Hill hated Jackson. Anyone who think that Hill would not use this opportunity to kill Jackson is fooling himself.

Well as far as "moral code" during wars I think the common soldier probably didnt care. Kinda like how the modern islamic extremist group and the Viet Cong would targer blue helmets and medics with higher priority. An army cant function without medics, engineers and support teams so those were also targeted more.

@@spookyboi8446 These people though shared the same culture. Why did people walk in lines and fire back and forth like it was turn based? It was expected. Southern Asia and Middle east is not even close to a fair comparison, either. Their values, alone, are so skewed compared to the union v confederate before going cultural differences. I obviously do not know. Just interjecting a subjective idea.
@spookyboi8446

@@keithemerson7662 well China has suffered from some of the most brutal conflicts in human history. The early Chinese Civil Wars are among the deadliest conflicts in history. Also the Union and Confederacy famously DID NOT share the same culture and that was one of the major factors in why the war erupted. The South had an agricultural economy and the North had an industrial economy. The South was rural and much more conservative in their approach to society. The North was slightly more open and progressive and was much more urban.

I do think the battle would have ended differently, but I'm not so sure about the war. Evenutally the South may have been forced to capitulate since the damned yankees had more numbers. Its a mathematical probability; but they still fought with honor for the cause in which they so believed in.
