Hey Dimitri! I am from Stony Brook as well but in the Computer Science department. I have always tried to take these courses (line ML for Finance) and the ones from AMS department. You have a very accurate review!!

I had a question. Can CS students at Stony Brook go to campus fairs for Finance students, especially by HFTs.

Thank you Dimitri! I'm currently looking at Grad Schools I could go to, and this series is definitely a million times better than looking at rankings. It's relaxing to hear you talk!

@@DimitriBianco Thank you for responding! I saw your video on Linedin Cold Messaging so I'll try to stay away from doing the things that grind your gears. I do have a single question though, I'm running a small start-up that is in risk management. The software accepts a stock_list, target standard deviation (annual), number of assets in a portfolio and total allocation. It returns with a selection of stocks from the stock_list provided and the number of shares that gets the portfolio closest to the target standard deviation. My motivation behind this project is because my parents invested all of their life savings into one particular stock that is relatively stable and when a black swan event hit they lost a lot. I asked why they didn't choose a diversified mutual fund and they said that they wanted a risk level lower than the S&P 500 and higher than the US bonds so doing this was their answer. The prototype is done and functional and I'm wrapping it in an api so that its ready for industrial use and for banks/fintech companies to integrate into their systems so other people won't suffer like my parents did. How do large companies/banks/financial institutions hear about new products that they can integrate into their system and what are the major limiting factors that prevent a large financial institution from integrating a new feature into their systems? Thank you so much for the content! I particularly enjoy listening to you talk, its like listening to that really smart friend after a couple of cold ones talk about something fascinating and you can't help but get engrossed. (Also How was my paragraph? I'm still new to cold messaging so if theres anything I coud do to improve my cold messaging please tell me!!)

Thanks for the info Dimitri. Relatively affordable and appears rigorous. For the PhD, do you think one would one have to go through the MSc program first? And I believe there might be some form of aid for PhD candidates, considering the duration.
@DimitriBianco
@DimitriBianco Жыл бұрын
For a PhD in the US, you should not need a masters. I believe Stony Brook is the same as other universities in not needing a masters. As for aid, I would assume top candidates would received some.

It's interesting to me how they have professors from Rentech yet Rentech doesn't even hire Stonybrook alumni

You realize Jim Simon's went to Stony Brook right?... correction, as others have pointed out, he taught there but did not attend.

@@DimitriBianco I thought that Simons went to MIT for undergrad then got his Ph.D. at Berkeley and went on to teach at Stony Brook afterward. What I was more referring to was now that RenTech has their reputation as a top hedgefund they don't even need to bother looking at Stony Brook resumes when they get applicants from MIT, Stanford, Princeton, etc.

@jarrydscully8430
@jarrydscully8430 Жыл бұрын
A quick LinkedIn search will suggest otherwise. Rentech runs a tight operation with little turnover, in other words, they don't do much recruiting in general. When they do, I would imagine most of these candidates have great experience - I would be shocked if rentech was hiring straight out of university. This is all beside the point - SBU doesn't broadcast that working at rentech is a reasonable/achievable goal after their program. It isn't a reasonable goal for 99.99% of quants in general.

Regarding moving to US, is it normal for banks to move their staff from London office to New York or Chicago? I want to move to US, and I was wondering if this is a valid option?

At 11:19, when you say "jobs in strategy" are you referring to strats? I am working under a strat this summer at a commodities firm focusing on physical delivery. I find the work really interesting and would love to hear your take on the strat job market and how their work differs from other types of quants. Moreover, I never considered a MFE because of the cost, but I did not know much about Stony Brook's program. I live on Long Island and the program seems it could make sense for me. Who is a good person to speak to learn more about their masters and PhD programs? Looking at their website, they seem to not offer many Econometric courses: are these courses not as fundamental to working as a quant as I previously thought? I would love to hear all your thoughts.

Great Review! Can you review the Quantitative Finance masters at University College Dublin? It's one of only a handful (about three) QF masters programmes in the country. Thanks and keep up the good work

Unfortunately no. I only make videos for programs which I review which is by invitation and the program has to provide additional information. I have invited a few schools from Europe however they are unwilling to participate.

Hey Dimitri, Is there a way to go towards quant finance path, but leave door open for applied math & research for later in life? Like working on protein folding predictions, helping building ML models math-wise, etc. If ones does a quant finance masters I would assume cannot do applied mathematics PhD. Or if they get applied maths masters won't have an easy time getting in quant finance. Do you think there is a way to do both? Thanks in advance

It is a good idea however it is very hard to do as I don't have internal data for those programs. For example, programs all list their courses with similar titles however the depth of material covered varies a lot.

Hello Dimitri! I've been working as a quantitative risk analyst in Europe for a couple of years now with a main focus on credit risk modelling for mortgages and corporate loans, I have a masters in applied mathematics. My wife is american and we both agree that we want in a couple of years to move to the US so our kids (who are also american citizens, but I am not) can go to school for a couple of years in the US. Do you think I will need to take a new masters degree in the US to be able to continue working in the field? Or will I be able to apply for similar jobs there with the experience I have?
