It's ok! I actually would recommend a more nutritious nut butter if you choose to, like sunflower. You could even make your own by soaking the seeds for a few hours to remove the phytic acid, then pureeing them, and draining them. It's not the same consistency, but it's a natural and tasty vitamin E source!

This is a great explanation of why comercial pet foods make our pets obese.
@treasuretrovel3816
@treasuretrovel3816 19 күн бұрын
The base line cause of dog obesity seems to be de-sexing. Makes their metabolism slow and deficient and that sets the sage for obesity even with calorie restriction. A huge problem that people don't think about is that if you cut your overweight dog's rations in half then he only gets half the nutrition. Do that for months and deficiencies occur. I have had two dogs that I fed species appropriate, keto raw, balanced food and walked them daily (40 to 60 minute, brisk walking with hills) plus daily play with the other resident dog friends and they became overweight. Cutting their portions very diligently did not move the scale more than a few ounces. One of my current dogs is unfixed and he is very slim despite me supplementing his rations with double cream, French Brie, full fat goat milk cheese, pats of grass fed butter and other calorie laden animal products (not grain carbs). Some of the veterinarians at the practice think he is too thin because they are so used to seeing fixed dogs only. There is one veterinarian at our practice who we recently saw who thought my dog looked great. Her specialty is orthopedics so she is the only one there who admits that desexing dogs is harmful-- She nor I are saying there are not benefits depending on the circumstances just acknowledging the fact that it causes harm.

I do not eat peanut butter and never food my dog it. Organic, sugar free? No. I think of what a wolf would eat. Wolves got vegetables from the stomachs of the animal they killed....so very little, and very seldom. Beef, turkey, chicken and salmon...a little pork, but rarely. Berries, yes. My dog is picky and doesn't care for vegs or fruit, but will eat a few frozen organic blue berries. Wolves ate berries too. I know our dogs are not Wolves, but I think in terms of what a wild animal would eat and it's not peanuts.

A few comments: first, not all peanut butters contain trans fat (or even sugar sometimes), and beef does has some at about 6% of its fat. And second, I agree that rice isn't a fitting food for dogs, but I'm skeptical about using the glycemic index, as dogs can't make amylase as effectively as people. I have a different idea as to the cause of pet obesity, but that's not relevant. Also, apparently high fiber was a big contributer to the grain free food DCM scare, and not just legumes.

@gwennie520
@gwennie520 29 күн бұрын
Hi Sharon, not recommended because commercial eggshells have been coated with chemicals that aren't great for our pets, unless you own chickens yourself or get the eggs direct from the farm. Also not recommended because (at least for dogs) you need a certain level of Phosphorus as well other than just pure calcium, if not the calcium won't be absorbed properly, and I'm sure it's similar for cats. Suggest to feed smaller bones like quail, but note that poultry feet tend to be lower in calcium, more for glucosamine. If you can't get your hands on bone grinds, try bone meal eg from NOW, or Four Leaf Rover has freeze dried bone powder that retains more nutrients than bone meal. Seaweed calcium is also okay - provides essential minerals other than just Calcium. Animal Essentials has one. Again all my knowledge is based on dogs. But should be similar for cats! Hope I helped.

And, if "people will think all peanut butter is bad and never use it again" for their dogs that would not be a bad thing. Peanuts are legumes and so, like peas and other beans have fermentable fiber that is not species appropriate for dogs. Feeding non-species appropriate food to a dog results in non-species appropriate flora in the GI tract. Most people have no idea how important is the species appropriate gut flora. The right mix of species, that wolves/dogs have evolved to harbor when they eat prey play a very important role in their long term nutrition. This is because the microbes make labile, short chain fatty acids that nourish the gut lining directly and also play a role in signaling in immune regulation. The right microbes also manufacture several of the B vitamins, some vitamin D and vitamin K. Skew the flora in weird ways with legume fiber and grains and the dog misses out. This is scientific fact. Only you control what your dog gets to eat, Mariah is just trying to make sure that people have the facts before deciding to what to feed their dog. Some peanut butter, some peas, some rice, some dirt, some poop, whatever, just as long as their main diet is what they evolved to eat if you want to do right by your best friend.

I like this channel generally, this time I still thought it would be a good idea to clarify some details and provide more information on the type of peanut butter this video mentions. *** The video is talking about processed peanut butter with additives. That is not peanut butter, rather a subcategory of it. In some parts of the wold, most brands don’t contain additives, you can also buy organic ones or you can also make it yourself. So when someone says peanut butter, I don’t think of spreads with additives I don’t even buy for myself and I’m sure there are others who are aware of this, so in this sense, the video is misleading. I now in some parts of the world they mostly have the kind which is heavily processed but I am sure they also have natural ones, that is one more reason the video should have clarified they are only going to talk about a specific type of product. I also read something about the FDA’s final determination where manufacturers were required to remove trans fats from their products between 2018-2021, that was just a quick search so others who are interested can find more details. I think the video should have gone into the effects of “actual” peanut butter if they decided to use the general term of “peanut butter”, intead of straight up telling pet owners who might not do their own research that it “has the potential of killing your pet. What is it? Peanut butter.”, quoting from the video.

Do an experiment: Offer your dog some raw or very lightly cooked, lean ground beef on one plate and on a second plate, smear some all natural peanut butter and see which one your dog prefers. Evolution is so amazing that it even results in the taste buds of a species already having some pre-programing. Same with the olfactory neurons and the visual settings. For example, if canids had evolved to eat fruit then they would have more taste receptors responsive to sugar, their eyes would see in color like that of primates who have evolved to seek fruit and their nose would lead them to apples instead of prey. We can argue for hours about how there are various vitamins or minerals in peanut butter and whether or not it is offensive for anyone to state that peanut butter is not a great food choice for dogs. But all of that is secondary to the overriding fact which is that canid species did not evolve to eat peanut butter.

Why do you have to cook it? :) My dog has a sensitive stomach too, and she does well on raw (i switched straight from kibble without a transition, haha). Btw, it's not recommended to just feed pure ground turkey/beef/pork + veg. Dogs get a lot of their nutrients from organ meats like liver and spleen etc. You should be able to get them for cheap since humans don't consume them usually. It's suggested to give them bones too for mineral requirements like calcium and to clean their teeth. I know you're on a budget but parts like chicken back shouldn't be too expensive, and only feeding what you are now can lead to serious nutrient deficiencies - had a neighbour who was doing the exact same as you, and his poor dog is malnourished despite eating upwards of 1kg a day. Don't cook the bones though, it'll make their teeth fracture. Remember variety is key, you should switch up what you feed them if u can to keep them healthy.

I get why we shouldn't feed peanut butter and this is a good reminder but... it works so good as a distractor. I stick to organic (salt and peanuts) and will only give my dog a spoonful spread out on a lick pad and only when I need to distract him here and there for a time. However, I will try to limit it even more after watching this and will look to find other solutions to occupy his time when needed.

Legumes are the worst thing to feed giant breed dogs. It’s why “grain free” food got a bad name-due to dogs getting DCM when eating it. It’s bc Legumes block the absorption of L-Taurine, and that’s already low in a lot of giant breed dogs! Rice is one of the worst offenders for causing skin issues and allergies in dogs as well. I quit feeding grain free kibble and went to raw once I realized I couldn’t find any reasonably priced that didn’t have legumes or rice. So glad I did!!! My dogs are healthier than they’ve ever been. For trace minerals, I feed one kid gummy vitamin a day per dog. Just be careful they’re natural (I do!) and have no funky additives or fake sugars that can hurt them!

I would say try gently cooking their meals if they eat 100% fully cooked meals at the moment. So the inside would be a bit raw and the outside is cooked and if that works out then you can shorten the cooking time till it’s mostly raw inside and slightly cooked outside. Though gently cooked meals are already pretty good for pets in my opinion.. it’s like a step down from raw dieting for me as long as everything’s nutritionally balanced

I'm sorry, but you didn't even mention the WORST problem with rice. A lot of people think that if you cook and then completely cool the rice overnight, you'll get resistant starches that can both lower the glycemic index of the rice and provide a very specific type of fiber called resistant starches that feed healthy bacteria in the gut. Most homemade dog foods are refrigerated or frozen, and that can lower the glycemic index of rice, and provide resistant starches. But even that doesn't make rice acceptable for dogs. All rice contains arsenic. And yes, I did say arsenic, that toxic substance that can kill in high enough doses. A lot of people think that eating whole grain brown rice is healthier, because it has a lower glycemic index than white rice, but it actually contains MORE arsenic than white rice. Even organic brown rice has arsenic, and some brands of organic brown rice were found to be the highest in arsenic. And arsenic is cumulative. Eating rice day after day, every single day, is how rice becomes so toxic. And with your pet eating the same brands of food every day, or owners only using one recipe that includes rice for feeding their pet, they can get an astronomic amount of arsenic, which can cause cancer, especially a very specific type of cancer that is found in the bladder. My dog died from that kind of cancer. I thought I was giving her the healthiest diet possible, including only organic foods, avoiding legumes and other anti-nutrients, and making sure that the rice I used was whole grain organic brown rice, refrigerating it overnight to provide her with healthy resistant starches and lowering the glycemic index of it. She ate that day after day for years, and died of bladder cancer caused by arsenic poisoning. THAT is the biggest reason why rice should not be fed to pets. And I'm horrified that you didn't even mention it, because that fact has been known for YEARS. And most people can't imagine the sorrow that finding out what you thought was the healthiest diet possible for your pet actually killed them. I sorrow every single day for my dog, Mitzi, who was the most loving and loyal and well-trained dog I've ever had. And it's been four years since her death, and I STILL think of her, every single day. Every day, she motivates me to try to do even better for my current three little dogs. And you didn't mention that peanut butter also contains aflotoxins. Even the no-added-sugar, no added fats, fresh ground nothing but organic peanuts from the health food store.

you really should separate cats and dogs because they are very different. Cats are obligate carnivores and dogs are more omnivores. Check out the latest info about grain-free diets for dogs. My opinion its the excess peas and legumes added to grain free but just my opinion. Essentially dogs need veggies and grain, but cats need pure meat. I learned a lot about this with my elderly kitties at the end of their lives, unfortunately too late to fix the damage. I'm trying to do better for my dogs but dog food companies even the better ones follow the trends. I don't have the time to do homemade right so I give them the best I can find and add fresh veggies.

As far as what I put in his bowl, I use a recipe by a world renown vet who has practiced traditional veterinary medicine for 30+ years, and wholistic and Chinese medicine for over 20 years. Her recipe has a small portion of veggies, but it's a well balanced recipe that can be fed raw or gently cooked. I add organic quinoa and 4 oz peas and 4 oz green beans for fiber (in a 14 pound loaf) because my dog started eating grass. Since I started adding some fiber, he eats much less grass.

Hi, not Mariah but i think her point is that you shouldn't be relying completely on spinach for iron requirements, not that you should cut out spinach completely. You should still rely on your meats for your protein. But spinach provides fibre and phytonutrients for our dogs, and is also a great low glycemic veg! Yes you should steam/puree/ferment before serving spinach though. Point is - spinach can still be great, just don't expect it to cover your dog's protein requirements. :)

Show me the proof carbs are harmful to dogs? If your dog isn't being overfed and is getting their nutrient needs met, then carbs are a great source of energy. I know of working dogs whose performance suffers without a good carb source. Dogs might not need carbs to survive but many working dogs need them to thrive. If you have a lazy house pet, you probably won't notice the degradation in performance. They've been eating carbs for thousands of generations and have 28 times the amylase activity of wolves
