Cold air intakes for the Q50 are quite expensive. Is the dollar to horsepower ration worth it? I’ll go deep into it here. Admittedly, this video may be tailored more to newer folks to the modification world.

I have a 2019 370Z with the VQ37VHR engine and I decided long ago not to replace the stock intake system with one of those CAI systems, as the stock system is very well designed and already intakes air straight from the grill intake. The ducting from the inlet to the throttle body to the manifold is plastic and rubber, just what one wants in having something that won't conduct a lot of heat from the engine bay to the incoming air. The ducts also do not have any sharp bends, so there's going to be little turbulence introduced to the airstream. The only thing that might improve airflow a little would be to put some less restrictive air filters on it but from what I've seen there is usually a trade off between the slight gain in airflow(less pressure drop across the filter) and the reduced filtration effectiveness of the filter. The very slight dyno gains I've seen on stock NA engines is on the order of a few hp at very high rpms, not worth it to me. I'd rather spend the money on a better, less restrictive exhaust system - a set of equal length long tube headers if my state's emission control laws would permit it and an unbaffled exhaust system.

I have AFE Takeda intakes on my Q, ever since I got them installed the car isn’t as rev happy, throttle response isn’t as peppy, and the transmission shift point seemed to have changed. Can this be because the MAF sensor placement has been changed?
@SpeedCultureStudios
@SpeedCultureStudios 4 жыл бұрын
It’s not necessarily because the placement is changed, but it is definitely due to a much larger volume of air registering at the MAF. Your car is calibrated to a specific amount of intake flow, so when you change that to bring larger volumes in, your car will not know how to handle it. If you tune the car to accept those larger volumes of air, everything with get peppy again.

I have no idea man, I I got my car in December and a shop installed the intakes within the same week. @videomaniac108 2 жыл бұрын
@@AQCE245 Realize that Admin Tuning is in the business of selling intake systems, as well as their tuning services, and has a financial interest in making their intake systems look as good as possible. Ask yourself how much of that power that was gained was due to just the tune and how much was due to just the intake system. Nissan maps the ignition and fuel parameters to conservative levels for safety, emissions compliance in all states and for protection of the company against excessive warranty claims. Much of that power increase you see is due to the tuner advancing the ignition timing up to the point that the knock sensors signal the computer to pull back on the timing; the tuner then backs off a little and that's it. The air fuel ratio is usually richened up from the prescribed 14.7:1 stoichiometric value which is for maximum catalytic converter efficiency to something around 13:1. This increased fuel increases the evaporative charge cooling and will result in slightly greater intake charge density, with a corresponding increase in power. The richer fuel mixture has the added benefit of allowing increased spark advance before the onset of detonation. A drawback to this is an increased tendency for carbon deposits to form in the cylinders, on the sparkplugs, on the exhaust valves and in the catalytic converters. You might see shortened catalytic converter life as a result of this. Unless your stock intake system is badly designed, you have drastically increased the engine's volumetric efficiency, extended the rev range or have gone to forced induction, I don't think you'll see great gains from just the new intake manifold. The custom tune might be a worthwhile thing, as long as you don't operate the engine in the danger zone of borderline detonation.

What about long tube CAI? A lot of people on FB G37 forums think that there's a big difference between short CAI rams like the R2C and Long Tubes....that long tube CAIs are better. The filters on these long tubes are up front and in front of the radiator. In fact half of the filter is up against the hot radiator....whereas my R2C intakes use boxes with flexible rubber seals which push up against a Dynamat engine bay cover affixed to the hood. (I had to replace the old one which had dry rotted.) The boxes receive air from the car's original air ducts located in the engine bay behind the grill. I also have a cat back exhaust from Invidia (Gemini) with Titanium flame tips. The R2C intakes to be honest are mostly about the look. I didn't expect big gains...These intakes are made with steel and are Nickel plated and finished in a beautiful high gloss black finish. Yet I was flamed for wasting my money and that my intakes were trash...And I'm dyno tuned with UPREV Osiris Ver. II. Love the sound.....

For now, just the Injens. They dip down sufficiently away from the engine while not so low where water puddles become a threat. Pretty sure you know which ones. You're absolutely right, they are pricey, but nothing incredible comes with very little expense, which is why I'll buy when they're priced down, hopefully that'll happen before my tour is over, if not I'll be $1,300 poorer. I've also been modding vehicles since I was a teenager, now mid 30's. A '95 Civic Si (MT) K&N air intake does nothing to it other than sound cool. On a '09 Mazda 3 (MT), Injen, very little, noticed a very slight gain on high rpms but like the Civic, sounds nice. On a Nissan Altima (CVT), K&N, *complete waste of money*, on a Nissan Frontier (AUTO) K&N, noticeable increase on acceleration and on this Q, (INJEN) also a noticeable pep increase. *edited due to typo, auto correct put MazdaSpeed when its a Mazda 3, still use as a daily work ride due to long commute.

BlkHwkGator sounds like we are the same age and started working on cars around the same time. The reason you’re noticing a difference in sound and everything else is because you have nothing else done. Most people are saying they felt very little-and many even saying the car got slower-with intakes. The way the stock system is set up, there is very little difference in design with a cai. You can hear it because of the comical filter causing the air to rush through in a different way. But you are not bringing in a larger volume of air because the diameters are so close to the same, which is where power comes from. In fact, the stillen intakes are smaller in diameter for example. If you go with the z1 intake tubes and drop in filters, it is essentially exactly the same as a cai, but it actually does a better job of bringing in cool air because of the ram style setup. You might be feeling a difference over stock, but again, once you start adding elements like catback, test pipes, tune etc, you will max out at a number that is the same as those with simple drop in filters spending half of what you spend on an intake. I’m not just making this up. It’s not an opinion. It’s been proven over and over. I did a video months ago with a dozen dyno results comparing mods and there are many more examples out there.
@BlkHwkGator

@@SpeedCultureStudios agreed, and great information as well for those that want to know more. I'm also not going to add the Stillen exhaust expecting a mind blowing gain, doing so because without a doubt, looks and sounds so much better than stock without pissing the neighbors off and still have a decent conversation with a hot date. However as most of us know, when adding mo' powah and sacks of money on performance upgrades, cat back exhaust upgrade is mandatory in order to get maximum gains with a proper tune. Meanwhile, I'll be happy with 330-340 whp which is my goal, ill be really impressed if more can be pushed with a proper tune. Time will tell!

@SpeedCultureStudios 4 жыл бұрын
These cars cannot handle a 3” exhaust. 2.5 is max. They just aren’t moving enough air. I did a video on this quite awhile ago. Something like best exhaust for the q50. I saw a loss of 8 lbs of torque going from a 2.25” to 2.5”. Going to 3” you’d see a major loss in torque and probably a slip in horsepower too. I no longer have a y pipe. The borla muffler acts basically as a resonated x pipe. Two in two out and the internals are just like a resonator but have an actual cross-over inside.

Hondacbr600rrish I’m not sure what you’re saying. If you were to go with a 3” exhaust, back pressure would essentially be eliminated. 3” exhaust is no good for cars making under 400 hp.

Drop in filters with factory air boxes really is the best route for the Q. I just did a side by side comparison on the dyno and the results speak for themselves. But there are 2 filters for the Q and they are about $50 each.

Chris Nichols I guess you have to determine what is valuable. As I said in the video, I’m all about practicality. Spending $400 on a part that does nothing for performance is not a bargain in my opinion. It’s $400 that could be used for something else that makes an improvement. I’m not worried about intake noises. I’m more about exhaust note. And the z1 tubes look pretty sharp-again for 1/4 the price. If you like them and it’s worth it to you, by all means. The dollar to hp ratio just makes zero sense. I’d advise against buying them every time, unless you can find a deal on a used set or something.

That is just untrue. Dyno proven by who? The company selling the intakes, of course. I’ve tested this myself and lost power and torque. As I’ve said a million times, the G37 responds better to intakes. There’s no doubt. But no G37 is making 10-13 hp with them without a tune.

So I’ve heard the K&N drop in filters are really good but the only problem is they come oiled and this could mess with the maf sensors so since they’re washable and reusable do you think I could just wash the oil off straight out of the box before I install them and just run them dry?

You’re funny. Far from a rookie by the way. Probably have been working on cars for longer than you’ve been alive. Anyway, I think you missed the point. Every platform reacts differently to intakes. The vq37 just doesn’t get much from intakes. It’s been proven over and over and over. It’s not just me making stuff up. It’s based on dozens of dyno results including my own. Even recently someone with custom 3” true cold air intakes on their Q50 made less power and torque than me with the same tuning software. I never said they don’t work at all. My argument is that they don’t work any better than simple drop in filters. Again-proven over and over and over. It’s just fact. You may want to consider educating yourself or watching the whole video to actually hear what I say. It actually sounds like you’d agree with me if you paid attention.

IF you were knowledgeable/Pro enough you would know that video you put up is B.S. For 50 you talk like 15 year old. And your statement is exactly my point. They are over priced. You may see improvement over stock with a tune, but you get the same result in a Q50 as a drop in filter. Just the way it is. Again, this is for the Q50/G37 specifically. Every car reacts differently. My mustangs in the past for example reacted very well to intakes and made quite a bit more power after install. Totally worth it on those cars. Unfortunately, these cars do not see the same gains. Good luck in your retirement.

@SpeedCultureStudios
@SpeedCultureStudios 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure who your comment is directed at, but that's a negative outlook on everything. First, people don't modify their cars because they hope to get paid or sponsored or drive a race car. They make modifications because they are passionate. They enjoy pulling additional performance out of their vehicle. Because it's fun to be part of a larger group with shared interests. It's a hobby. Z1 isn't robbing anyone. They are filling a demand in the market. Aside from that, some of us do actually get paid to modify our cars. Some of us actually do get sponsored. And some of us actually do participate in racing events. And "wasting" money is subjective. If modifying your car gives you an outlet--is a stress-reliever or a source of joy--its money well spent. If it doesn't hinder your daily life or keep food off the table, there is nothing wrong with it. With all of that being said, there are some parts for certain platforms that really do nothing for overall performance and are truly a waste of money. That's what this video is about.

@@SpeedCultureStudios Thank you for your quick response on this subject matter. I appreciate your input. But my ?? Is, ....how much is enough? How much money has to be spent on squeezing 1 or 2 hp out of your engine. People are starving, cant pay their rent. But poeople are like, " its a cool hobby?" Trying to make a sports car off track will only kill people or yourself. Have morals and values...put that money into helping people who are less fortunate than you. Do something good for your community and stop being selfish.

@@CrazyHyperecords I'm getting the feeling that you are not part of the car scene or do not enjoy the hobby. It's a legitimate question--how much is too much. I mean something I talk about a lot is bang for your buck and when spending this much or that much for a couple more hp doesn't make sense. I agree there. But you're way off base when you bring morals into it. I do not condone street racing, but to think just because someone spends money on their car to make it faster means they are out racing and going to kill people is just ignorant. People build dual purpose cars. They drive them to work, but modify them to race at the track on the weekend. You also can't be angry at people for spending money on themselves, which they earn by working. Would it be fantastic if everyone modding their cars put $1 into charity for every $100 they spent on car parts? Sure, that would be great, but to say they are immoral or selfish if they don't is just ridiculous. And who is to say they don't donate their money or their time, which is also valuable? You seem a little self-righteous with a touch of a moral-superiority complex coming in here telling people that they are selfish and have no morals because they like to buy parts for their cars. The next time you buy some new clothes or have a nice meal, I want you to feel guilty because you don't actually need those things, and rather than enjoying a nice night that you deserve because I assume you worked for that money, you should stay inside and donate your paycheck to someone in need--because a nice meal and new clothes is selfish and wasteful. A lot of these guys sacrifice nice clothes and vacations so they can buy parts--because they LOVE it. And you can't judge them for it.

@@CrazyHyperecords there again, you cannot judge or tell anyone what they “should” do with their own money. Is it wise to put yourself in a compromised situation financially? Of course not. But you can’t jump on here and assume that everyone is being financially irresponsible because they are buying a few bolt on parts for their cars. This is why a lot of my videos revolve around budget friendly modifications or avoiding parts that are a “waste of money.” I would agree with you in that I see some difficult economic times on the horizon and would suggest that we all be conscious of that, but I’m not going to scold or preach to anyone. I wish happiness and health to everyone. If modding cars brings you that peace, do it!
