I bought, no actually I pre-ordered, Immortals Fenyx Rising on the PS5. Within a month, that game was selling for 20 bucks. I have yet to even open my copy. But it was a valuable lesson. It is the last time I pre-order a game that is not from an established series… and even then I’ll probably wait. Edit: I should add my reason for buying it is that I got caught up in the “it’s BotW but by Ubisoft” hype. And maybe the game is fine but I’ve never had a game drop in value faster than that game.

Yea been collecting 10+ years and you hit the nail on the head … in the beginning I was going to flea markets every Sunday and just buying filler and anything I could find .. eventually I stopped and just went online cuz I got tired of wasting my time and money on junk … I eventually sold off all the flea market stuff besides the best stuff I found and made a great profit .. ended up spending the profit on games I really want … they are all 2x 3x in value vs what I paid at the time … I wouldn’t collect games today at the prices I see .. when I got rule of rose it was a $175-$200 max game cib

Yup. I purchase a lot of things... but for years, i've been selling quite a bit too. My collection was full of "Why do i have this?" games. Downsizing collections you already have and focusing on what really interest you right now is always good.

Agree completely. I was definitely guilty of this in my early days. Just buying cause I found something underpriced. The last few years though, I realized how silly that is, I was filling my space with stuff I didn’t really care about. I've become a lot more mindful about purchases and left a lot of "good deals" behind.

I feel like every collector goes through this every once in a while where they just pray & spray and buy *everything*. But then they run out of monies (e.g., the debt collectors lol) or just realize it's trash they don't really care about. Then they focus, and the cycle begins again. From the collector's pov, it can be quasi-justified hoarding.

I have been slowly coming to this realization the past few weeks. It's so tempting to buy the 10-20 mid tier games that are easy to find, instead of spending the time hunting for that one game that you really want, or worse, waiting for it to pop up on a known marketplace. Now, after two and a half years of collecting, I have way more games than I ever thought I would. I've done this once before and started recognizing the signs. At one point I was into buying books. I bought so many that I never read, or would ever use. And when I needed to move, it was such a huge burden that I gave most of them away. They kept accumulating and were nice to look at but ultimately were just a burden. At the end of the day, stuff you don't use or truly care about is just junk taking up space and mental energy. I see now that I have way overcollected on bad games just because they were far easier to source and cheaper... I wish I could go back and stop myself, and just stick to the few games I really wanted. At least I remember a specific point/phase where i allowed my buy list to expand beyond what i really actually wanted into a much wider net of games that were poorly reviewed. So i can hopefully avoid this in the future. The real issue is that I wanted to collect even though what I wanted to collect wasn't available at the time. But live and learn.

I think when It comes to collecting many people hear about stuff or look at things relating to it online to see how it is then go for it due to it being a " must have " or a classic popular game or whatever. I have brought a few games and other thing that It wasn't so good but they weren't priced high thankfully. I try to test or research really good before any purchase I make. I think having a small collection full of many wonderful things is perfect. That's how I love my collecting. Cool video. ^_^

I don't leave the house for game purchases, and am very strict with my ebay and ha buys. So that cuts down a lot. I went through the buy anything that's cheap and looks in good condition phase, but it was short. So I don't have much junk to offload. What you're talking about, w the not buying cheaper stuff n just buying less of the expensive shit, is what I've been doing for some time now. Honestly though, I do have a lot of sealed, but I'm perfectly happy with 9.4 level cibs. They're fun to put together, and getting more challenging as time goes on, I'm pretty damn good at pressing manuals and case art, removing mild stains etc, and they are way cheaper than sealed obviously. That type of money I'll just throw into an s&p 500 etf and be done with it. I'm into this shit, but not that into it.

100% right on this topic even applies to thrifting games. Since most places are 5 bucks a game, you really have to decide if your buying just because its in front of you or if you actually want it. Its actually crazy how much junk thrift stores sell for 5 bucks a game, in most cases more than it would be at a game store. People just think they have to have it bc its a game and buy everything effectively filling there collection with garbage. Id buy everything when they were 2 bucks a game but at 5 Im very selective

I buy games all the time with no prior knowledge about them just to try them out, but I always make sure I only pick them up if they are priced for less than I can sell them for. By doing that, I can either sell it on and get my money back if it turns out to be a load of rubbish, or keep it if it's actually good (at which point I've discovered a new game and got it for a fraction of what it's worth). I've picked up a lot of junk games over the years by doing this but I can easily recoup my money if it ends up being bad.

Sometimes less is more, just getting rid of the clutter and only keeping what you actually want to use. Great video Greg. I try by best to not buy junk but every now and then some make it through. I’ve found myself buying more of the newer games on clearance more this past year bc of physical being phased out, but they’re games I least somewhat want so it’s fine? Haha my rule of thumb is if I actually beat the game then the Purchase was worth it. Since I started collecting again 3 years ago I am honing in on beating 100 games 👀 yet this represents 1/5 of my collection.. my train of thought on beating games becomes murky when you consider games like Mario party or smash bros which you can kinda beat the game but not really 😅

When I collected for Atari 2600 and NES the issue was: how many different games in my collection? It was cool to reach the 300 threshold for each system….350….400 and on. I didn’t look at the new additions as junk, but as expansions to the collection. And yes, I’d prefer 50 $5 additions to one $250 addition. Looking back, some of those $5 games turned out to be fun. Some turned out to skyrocket in value. But games were cheaper back in the day and collecting is probably different now. When I look at the Wii, I figure almost all of the shovelware games will always be shovelware. They won’t later turn out to be hidden gems (because all the hidden gems have been identified on KZfaq) and I really doubt they’ll go up in value very much. Still, if I see a pile of Wii at $2 each, I’ll grab titles I don’t have. $2 is practically free, and the cases alone will eventually be worth that.

This struck me about 6 years ago, I was just buying games for the sake of it. Ended up getting rid of all my PS2, PS3 and Sega stuff as had no real interest in them. I used to still buy 4 or 5 games a month but have stopped doing that now. I might buy one a month now or save up, go to a game convention and splurge. Was in Japan this time last year and the money I had saved up instead of buying just any old crap went towards stuff I've always wanted, like Famicom, Super Famicom and Virtal Boy games. Went through my Xbox 360 games just before Xmas, had loads of games that I hadn't looked at for years and the trade in value / prices on eBay were rubbish. I ended up giving them to a person I work with.

I tell people not to impulse buy items that can't be flipped for a worthwhile profit. That attitude of not wanting to pay up for desirable items is very prevalent, and honestly understandable, but that usually leads people to buying junk because they never find anything else and hope to make scores that probably will never happen.

What do you think about buying niche sealed games with sentimental value for 100, 300, 500, 1000$ that probably have no or little resale value because of being so niche, but that are expensive because they're basically never on the market? Like lets say someone grew up playing King James Bible for the Game Boy and it's their favourite game ever. Two sold listings one for 900$. If it comes up, you kinda just have to grab it, but will you ever be able to sell it? Maybe, maybe not.

I disagree. The moment you have a “goal” with your purchases, this fun past time quickly becomes a job. Careers have goals. Video games are for fun.

@@Trey_Murder You’re kinda right. The difference here is that you’ve shifted what you enjoy. You no longer enjoy (or primarily enjoy) buying video games to play. You now enjoy buying video games to have them. So when I say it “turns into a job”, that’s kind of a misnomer. It’s more that you’ve turned a fun past time into something on par with collecting stamps or coins…. which I suppose is fun for some people.

Be careful labeling cheap games as junk. If theres a game thats considered good and its cheap, its worth getting. This isnt anything new though lol. Filling up shelves with impulse buying is the issue regardless of price

@@GetTheGreg A lot of games that are expensive due to just rarity are usually awful games, or at most super mid. My friend owns haunting ground and kuon. He bought them years ago when PS2 was still the lastest console, and we played them and we weren't impressed. Crazy to see how expensive they are now.

Greg, I’ve got to know, WHY do you think so highly of FF8? Was it the first game you ever played? Did you a relative that died shortly afterwards buy it for you? I can see someone saying FF6, FF7, FF9, and hell, even FF10 being their favorite. But FF8 is so…. I don’t even have the words. If I had to say it in one, it would be “sucks”. The entire combat mechanic of having to draw spells from enemies is so bad, they never tried it again. Seriously, what gives?

I think it just hit at the right time. It was one of the first games we ever had on PS1 and everything about it just blew me away. Graphics, story, gameplay.. it was all just something I had never experienced before and I was completely enthralled with it. It just hit so perfectly.
