Just got a Casio Royale... It was like 25 bucks and it's great. I also have a Japanese car. It was cheap and is also great. I took the extra money and put it into my son's college fund. I think I made the correct investment.

This really made me reflect on my 11 seikos... and I regret NOTHING!

bought a cheap watch. bought a cheap car. bought cheap shoes. bought cheap everything for a long time. bought a nice house.

personally I would rather have 4-5 watches around $300-$500 vs 1 watch worth $2000 simply because I want to have multiple watches with multiple styles for multiple occasions. That being said once I feel like I have 1 watch for each possible occasion then I will start saving for a more expensive piece

I mean casio, seiko, timex are durable and aren't overpriced

I’ve always had the philosophy of getting exactly what I want or getting nothing at all. I don’t accept cheap substitutes. I don’t have a lot of money, but in the long run this has worked out for me. Everything I get is minimal, but it’s also quality. You treasure what you buy and it usually lasts you a long time. I find this a lot more satisfying than “settling” for something you really don’t want. It takes a lot of willpower and discipline to hold out, but it’s definitely worth it in my eyes.

Well give me Rolex money and I’ll buy it. But until then, sticking with Seiko, Casio, orient

This is all a matter of perspective. As a middle-class guy, I can afford to buy a Rolex if I really wanted to, but it would be a stretch for me. Given that I have other expensive hobbies, it's tough to pull the trigger on a so-called luxury watch. As a result, I have found that I truly enjoy the more affordable watches, and I love having a nice collection of watches that I can turn to depending on my mood that day. I have a couple decent dress watches, some nice casuals, and a few nice dive watches as well. People often ask me what watch I am wearing today. Now, if I had skipped all of these affordable, enjoyable watches in order to save up for the grail watch, sure, it might feel good at the time, but that feeling would fade soon enough. Then, I would have been stuck with one watch, every day, knowing that for the price of that watch, I could have so much more. Then again, I am also of the opinion that spending thousands on a watch that doesn't even track time as accurately as a cheap quartz is a foolish decision for all but the most affluent among us.

I work in a hospital boiler room. Before this I served 8 years in the Navy working in the engine room of steam driven ships. For work a Timex of no more than $40 is best. I once lost my Timex Atlantis in the bilges of the ship and found it a few days later submerged in seawater still working fine. Replaced the strap and it was fine. I can’t justify buying a watch for over $100 on my income and needs. I do have a Bulova but this was a company retirement watch given to my dad and passed down to me when he passed away. A dress Timex for under $100 is about the best I can justify for a purchase of a watch.

It's crazy how quickly my concept of "cheap" watches went from between $100 - $300 to $1,000 - $2,000. I started my collection at the beginning of 2020 with a hamilton khaki field mechanical for $300. I thought that was not cheap but also not too expensive. Last month I won an ebay auction for an Omega seamaster 300m for under $2k. Expensive but relatively cheap for what it is I think.

My first watch was a Seiko 5 (snzf15j) and I was happy for only a month or so, until the novelty of it wore off. I should not have purchased on impulse. I then bought an SKX007J, after months of research and looking at pictures of it from every angle, and absolutely love it. I wear it almost every day and never get bored of it. I also own a $10 Casio F91W lol

and then there's me who struggled one year to pull the trigger in a Orient Mako 2. Finally got it today and it was totally worth the wait. I think you should never impulse buy, but always think very carefully about the things you spend your money on.

I collect affordable watches almost exclusively. It's fun for me. I may buy a Tudor Or Omega down the line, but I really enjoy finding excellent watches for under $100.

I've had my £60 seiko 5 since I was 13 and now, 6 years later its still running perfect i love it!

What I like is that there's such a wide array of highly desirable, well-made watches in the sub-$300 range. That price point allows me to have more than one watch that I really enjoy wearing. My Orient Bambino was only about $130, and it's stylish and well-made enough that I'll hand it down to my kids one day.

I am new to this hobby. One rule I have for myself is before I purchase any watch I research both the brand and model for a minimum of seven days. If after an entire week of scrapping the internet I’m still in love with the watch. I allow myself the joy of purchasing it. We all have different taste and desires. Never buy a watch because someone else tells you it’s the best watch and by the same token never decide to not buy a watch because someone else doesn’t like it. One of things I have enjoyed the most about this hobby is learning. Learning all the history and brands, different materials and designs. Decide for yourself how many watches do you want for your own collection. What brands do you like. What colors, materials and style do you like. What size wrist do you have. What’s the appropriate size case for you. How much are you realistic able to afford versus how much you are actually willing to spend. Remember at the end of the day this is a hobby not your livelihood. My watch collection currently consists of three watches and is growing at a slow and healthy pace. Honestly I agree with this video. Don’t spend all your money on affordable watches. Collect a few prize pieces along the way as you research and learn value & appreciation for craftsmanship and quality. Eventually you’ll be able to identify your holy grail of a watch or a small handful of watches you’ll really enjoy. I do not collect simply for the sake of collecting. I collect to wear, enjoy and experience living a life we’re my collection is just that, my collection.

And then there are watches that are not affordable but should be in the affordable class of watches. Im seeing a lot of micro brands that are asking substantial amounts for watches that are clearly not worth it .

Watches are an interesting paradox. I think you can simultaneously appreciate and enjoy all types of watches at all price points and also realize that if we're truly honest it's an item that we really don't need and the money could be spent better elsewhere. So at the end of the day as long as you're not being financially irresponsible buy away and enjoy it if it makes you happy. Certainly watch collecting is not as dangerous as other vices out there.

I was curious about what you meant with "affordable watches" because I have a couple of cheap ones, so I clicked on the video. Then you said "anything less than 300 dollars" and I looked with sadness on my "collection" of watches which consists of timepieces I bought for less than 20 bucks each.

I have a citezen ecodrive chronograph I bought a few years ago and love it. However worried about when the power cell fails heard it can cost about $400 to replace it.i paid around $170 .is the replacement cost true?

hello . want to buy a seiko automatic but want to know what are the maintinace costs for these kind of watches and when to do the service of the watch , how its gonna cost ???

A friend is very wealthy, he owns watches in the 200K range and many others in the 40K plus range. We were out and about and I was wearing one of his gold Rolex watches and him a 200K custom watch. We go into a very high end watch shop in LA the man of course looks at my arm and his and then says to me, what's your preference in watches? My response, "Citizen" they just make sense to me. No, high end for me, I own citizen watches, a Seiko and one specialty watch with Nixie Tubes. I'm very far from wealthy, so why would I spend the cash on a watch, I like them but I prefer my other hobbies to telling time. In honesty I think my Seiko Presage with chocolate brown face is pretty amazing and it makes me feel 70's cool, when I wear it. Wear something that makes you feel good, Swatch to Seiko, really doesn't matter if your happy sporting it.

That's nice...Now how about a reality check? Unless I have a 100,000 dollar a year job, a Rolex/Oris/Omega is out of the question. If the damn thing gets stolen (or breaks), I have lost a large (for me) amount of money/time. It is simply not worth it. The time or the risk. A Toyota Camry will do better than a Rolls Royce, in this case.

LOL. I have a large collection. some of them cheap, some of them mid-priced, and some expensive. variety is the key. I love them all and wouldn't sell any of them. some days I wear a $200 Hamilton that I love, and some days I wear my Rolex. just bear in mind that the watch does not make the man, the man makes the watch.

Hey Teddy, looking for some advice. I'm looking for a 'holiday watch', basically a more affordable watch that i can take on holiday and if it gets stolen or etc, it wont be too much of an issue for about $50 or less. So I am comparing the Timex Weekender and the Timex Easy Reader with the date complication, both will be put on a lighter brown strap. Something similar to what yours look like in this video, whats your take? Or any others I should take a look at.

I tend to think buying several affordable watches is an important part of the learning process. (Within reason of course.) Those early watches teach us the difference between what we imagine we will like; and what we truly enjoy. One has to develop their taste somehow, preferably before the bigger purchases start.

I was saving up for an Omega Seamaster, and had planned on purchasing it in the next year or so. Even though I had the money, I came across the Dan Henry 1962 Panda dial. I know it is considered an affordable watch (and by God it is), but I absolutely fell in love with it, even more so than the Seamaster. Both are beautiful watches, clearly different appeals, and, I wasn't concerned specifically about the type of watch (diver vs chrono). The price of the watch had little to do with the purchase (as I fell in love with the dial, and think I like both the Seamaster and the 1962 about the same), but when I saw the price at only $260 I couldnt resist. It was a watch I loved, and didnt care it wasnt a mechanical/automatic. It was something that, I felt I would enjoy as much as the seamaster even though it is about 1/15th of the price. I think, someone shouldn't be mega concerned about the price, as long as they know what they are buying, and find something they love, not just sort of like.

Really appreciate this point of view. You've inspired me to save up for the watch I want. Rather than getting other ones to "hold me over."

Definitely a valid point. However I will say that two of my cheapest watches are also my favorites. My Seiko SKX and SRP are fabulous to wear and look at - they compete quite well with my Rolex, Panerai, Zenith and Tudor. So my advice is to pick high value pieces that you love and can afford - don’t buy in haste. Impulse decisions are the real danger, and also deprive you of the best part of watch buying...the hunting and obsessing!

Good video. Keep up the consistent stream of videos. I agree that you shouldn't buy 10 affordable watches out of impulse. Especially since your wrist can only wear 1 at a time. However I don't agree that more expensive watches are always better than more affordable ones. People should be content with owning one or two affordable watches. People shouldn't feel like they need a rolex or omega to be able to have a watch they can enjoy.

Love it sir. My first “decent” watch was a citizen I bought that is best to hell but it’s got perfect time & fits most occasions. I then got a Luminox to which it was a gift but sometimes wish it was something better. I have 2 other citizens (one that was a wedding gift from the wife & another that’s my dressy option). While I like all of the watches, I have been in love with Oris, specifically the old Day Date & the now newer Aquis. It’s nearly 3 to 4 times the price of any the watches I have now but boy do I sometimes almost wish I only had that watch over all of my current ones. It would fit the realm of any occasion while being able to take a daily beating of my days to day life as a professional Chef. Love the video. Do you recommend buying a watch such as an oris at a pre-owned price of around $600-$700 or just buying new at about $1100? Love to hear your thoughts & opinions. Cheers sir.

Your average person could never afford a 3-4 thousand dollar watch. It is also not practical for the average person to use one. Also by limiting yourself to expensive luxury watches you miss out on a whole world of significant cool watches. I think that the person who has to have a Rolex Submariner, a Omega Seamaster and a Tag Carrera really don't love watches and are just buying them foe the status. I do agree though and this aplies to just about everything don't cheap out and make do. Get what you truly want.

Smart, coherent video Teddy. I have a 1969 Rolex Date just-stainless with a gold fluted bezel-that my grandparents gave me. It had been sitting new in a drawer. It's 36mm and a bit small in today's world. I still wear it. In 1988 I bought a used 1971 Omega Speedmaster. I sold it for $1900 in 2011 because it needed $800 in work. I then bought a mint used Victorinox Titanium XLS Chronograph Classic for $240. It's quartz, but with a high-quality, complex, repairable ETA 251.262 27 jewelled movement. Except for the movement, the quality of the Victorinox is equal to the Speedmaster. A year ago I bought the Bulova Moon Watch bracelet model used for $285. Except for the movement, it's every bit the quality of the Speedmaster...maybe better. And it has Bulova's incredibly accurate Precisionist movement with a silky smooth second hand. I feel no reason to revisit an expensive Swiss piece. When the Orient Star Classic can be bought for under $400, I have zero hankering for plus-$3000 watches. It's every bit as good at almost any premium plus $3000 watch.

I agree to a certain point... I think starting your collection with a few affordable (cheap) watches is not a bad idea. It enables you to try out different types and styles of watches before spending a lot more on a watch (you think) you lust after the most. I sort of agree with you. Having said that, it's all relative. I just bought an omega seamasters 120m. It was $800, but had I waited, and saved I could have bought an omega that I would have loved rather than one I just like.

If someone assumes the more they spend on an item, the better it is, they can get fooled just as fast. Many items that cost more are built more complex and require more frequent and higher maintenance cost. The parts also usually cost more. An example are you tube videos telling consumers not to buy a Mercedes. The depreciation is high and a shock absorber for example costs over $800.00.

I love waiting for them to arrive and the fun of opening them up. They are just about all divers too. Mostly Automatic with a few Quartz....I need counseling...lol

Reading the comments, this video seems to have erred in making the assumption that most people ultimately want and are trying to get to a Rolex. As a photographer, I definitely agree with Teddy's preference for a leaner line-up that covers all bases, but like cameras, some people just like amassing a broad and diverse collection of the things they collect (in this case watches), and you just can't get there if every piece is going to be a Rolex. For those types of collectors, buying affordable and often fits the bill.

Cheap quality watches are great. The issue is not cheap or expensive. The issue is impulse buying. When I first brought my swatch irony, I was looking at the watch shop window for about 6 months. I was looking at other watches also just to make sure, this is the one. I wanted to buy it on the on the 2nd week but lucky I waited 6 months. 4 years later, this is a watch I love and I still love it. It has a bit of scratches on it :/ but what can you expect. It still has character. I also did the same with my new Casio G shock square and I love that as well. Now I have 2 watches I truly love. I'm loving my G shock :) You have to treat your purchases like your buying an expensive watch. I'm looking into the Seiko 5 but I still have to stick to my rules. Look at the shop window many times and wait 4 to 6 months. Now I have 2 watches, I can just take my time and take a year or 2 years instead. Never be in a rush to buy a watch. You might end up buying something you don't like.

This is an excellent topic, Teddy. Thanks for the excellent video. I started out collecting exactly as you first describe, buying cheap style watches mostly on impulse. I bought three of them that way before it occurred to me that I might enjoy it far more if I started looking for better quality watches. I started out with an inexpensive, basic, Timex weekender, which I still have and enjoy. After that, my watches started being even better quality and therefore more expensive. I have had to slow down buying the watches in order to afford the better ones, but I am enjoying the process of hunting down and buying them as I can afford them. To me, this is more enjoyable and I’m going to end up with a handful of inexpensive watches and a handful of moderately expensive watches so I have watch for every mood and every occasion. Right now, I’m preparing to get a Squale 1521 (polished blue) in September. And just as you said, I’m not saying this is the right way to buy watches or the best way to buy watches, it’s one way to buy watches that I particularly enjoy.😊

I have "affordable" watches that I love equally some arguably more) than my expensive pieces. The rule is this, as quoted from Spike Feresten from a Hodinkee episode: "Watch design transcends price".

Well.... as a non rich beginner collector, I love affordable watches. I can have a collection, later I will have learned and I can up grade each type as the inclination comes... trade in my seiko 5 feild watch for the hamilton... BTW just picked up a Casio Duro on e bay for 27$, looks great on a Bond Nato strap...

Buy what you like in terms of watches. Nobody become a millionaire from flipping watches. You want an easy no brainer investment, then invest in real estate. Irrelevant of what watches people have they need a roof over their head. Irrelevant of how bad the. Market falls, houses will always be needed and historically real estate has always gone up. Once you get bored with that reward yourself with a Tudor :)

Agreed. Delayed gratification is so much more enduring and enriching. Not a watch story, but I wanted a pair of Sonus Faber speakers which were so far out of my price range as to border on the esoteric. Five years of saving later, they are the statement piece in the listening room and never fail to make me smile. Lesson: anticipation leads to enjoyment.
