When my husband's blood sugar started putting him in a high risk category I started more and more scratch style cooking. I always did some, but I mean making granola, sauces, muffins with wheat flour, canning fruit and making fruit toppings for things. The doctor was stunned when three months later it had dropped significantly enough to remove him from the high risk category. There is much truth in you can control what you put in when you make it yourself. Great video.

Great video! Homemade usually tastes best and is the better value. For popcorn, you can take a handful of that plain popping corn and put it into a brown lunch bag. Tear a few slits in the bag and fold the top over twice. Pop in the microwave for 2.5 minutes. Pour into a bowl, drizzle a little oil and toppings you like, and enjoy. Costs about 10 cents per serving. Always available hot and fresh.

@@LondonBridge99 Look for popping corn in a bag or jar. No additives or seasonings (you add your own) and no oil or bags. I've found them at Walmart, Trader Joe's (not always), bulk bins at the fancy grocery store, and even in discount markets sometimes. One bag lasts a long time!

These are some great ideas!! I’ve been popping my popcorn on the stove since I was a child. Microwave popcorn very rarely came into our home growing up and that’s carried over into adulthood for me. I put a few tablespoons of oil in a pot(I use coconut oil. Gives the popcorn an amazing flavor), pour enough kernels to cover the bottom in a single layer, put a lid on the pot and let it heat. Once it starts popping I shake the pot some. From start to finish it’s maybe 3minutes. So easy and delicious! And I agree with you on jarred alfredo 🤢 so gross! Thanks for sharing again in the video how easy it is to make your own! I’ve yet to do it myself but I think I’ll be trying it soon since I have all of those ingredients in the house right now.

I use homemade soup mixes when I’m making something I know we’ll finish in one meal. My experience is that reheating leftovers, or for a freezer meal, canned soups hold up better. The homemade is watery upon reheating or thawing and cooking. Might explain how many additives are in there to make it that way lol. I’ve wanted to take a look at thrive market, but they won’t let you browse the site without paying. I want to see what they have, prices etc to see if it fits us, but they just won’t let you. I agree on the litehouse ranch. It’s the best, and I’ve never been able to duplicate.

And I understand the point of your video is to make homemade versus store bought, but I’ve recently found Great Value brands of most soups are great. The chicken noodle is not my fave but the cream soups are great at just $.68 per can 😁 But I am about to make a homemade for chicken pot pie so thank you!!

Some of the marinades are terrible expensive now. Creamed soups are pricing themselves out of resistance for me. I have one of the stir poppers for popcorn. I love it. I can control the amount very handily. Great ideas and reminders. Q few things I never considered. I have never got into the hamburger helper and side dishes of prepackaged noodles, rice, dried potatoes, etc. They taste good but the salt etc. Is through the ceiling. Great video! There are so many things we can't eat in our household that keeps us from 90% of the "cheap eats" videos. Even though I work full-time plus I am getting fast at making things from scratch. We can't do wheat or pork and have to minimize dairy and the spendy replacements are not always great. I also have one carb-free family member so I can't mix food items together. I'm learning other great tricks to save money on food. One of the biggest is to avoid waste of those precious veggies and meat that we do purchase. The freezer is my best friend. I appreciate the roux with cornstarch! I also make my own seasonings most of the time! Menu-planning and using every ingredient wisely is my best money-saving tip.

Try flour bread. Buy self-rising flour (Martha White or other good quality) and mix with cold water till you have a runnier type consistency. Oil a cast iron skillet and pour the bread mixture in. Bake at 400 until the top browns (about 25 minutes). You can also turn the top broil on for a minute to give it more color. It's crispy on top and bottom and chewy like a biscuit in the middle. It's really good as a dinner bread (not sandwiches).

Excellent advice! In culinary school, one of the first things they teach is "mother sauces", one of which is called a "veloute", which is the "cream of..." sauce. Corn starch is also a great tip-- with one difference being holding strength. As long as you're not holding the dish on a buffet, or steam table (it will break over time), its a terrific choice! Nice job- love to see this kind of encouragement!👏👏👏

Thank you for all these tips! I learned something new about how dressings like ranch can be made, and a reaffirmation of some things my family taught me to do. I love popping popcorn at home, and it's become a fun way for my family to make up new recipes with, like a cheesy garlicky popcorn, or a sweet cinnamon popcorn. The BEST popcorn that tastes most like the distinct buttery movie theatre popcorn: requires the best butter you can buy. Anything from Darigold to whatever's in your price range, they have a distinct strong butter flavor. To kick it up one notch more, brown your butter in a pan, and pour it over the fresh popcorn and sprinkle with salt. It's so simple and so good. Let me know if you try it, it'll make my family proud! 🙏

I will say that making pasta/noodles is actually very easy! I use my KitchenAid stand mixer to mix the flour (I used King Arthur Measure for Measure GF flour) and water or water/egg yolks. I then use the attachment to either press out the shapes or roll our and cut the dough. I have used both my 5 quart and 6 quart pro to make the dough. Because I use GF, I dont have to knead as much, just need to bring the dough together. Then place in fridge for 30 min and voila, dough!

Homemade red pasta sauce: Sweat a chopped onion in a pan. Add a tin of chopped tomatoes, garlic powder a pinch of salt and a teaspoon of sugar. A sprinkle of dried herbs, a few red pepper flakes or the grated zest of a lemon will enhance the flavour. Another thing I never buy is pesto: the homemade product is far better. Only five ingredients: fresh basil, pinenuts, garlic, grated Parmesan and a little olive oil.

Ever since trying to eat healthier (knowing what goes into my food), I have look up recipes for seasonings and dressings. I definitely tried making taco seasoning, curry, salad dressing (acv base), chicken rub/dry-spice, and some korean sauce for a stir fry. Need more practice with curry though, since I seem to offshoot one ingredient or two with that one, and curry can taste vastly different based on country of origin (Japanese/Korean/Thai curry).

I haven't bought pancake mix in 50 years. It is easy to, mix eggs, flour, milk and baking powder. I also do not buy cake mixes and. Have never bought spice blends. They are a relatively recent phenomenon. I stock a variety of spices. I got into the bad habit of buying marinara sauce until I realized a can of tomatoes, spices etc is cheaper. That is how my Italian mom made it. You are paying for convenience when you buy mixes etc.

Helpful and useful video. Makes me sad im a failure at alot of it. I have tried again and again and I cant make cream of anything. I have to get the can🤦‍♀️. I'm ok with it because I'm not a cook I'm a baker, unfortunately my RV oven doesn't like me 😔...but the park as a event room, and im afraid of people 🤦‍♀️

Thank you for the video! I am dying for fresh veggies here in HI. The prices for tomatoes are crazy - $4 per lbs and up Avocadoes - over $1 for one and they grow here! One lemon - $1! $2 for a cucumber. Can't want to go back to the mainland in a couple years and enjoy the fresh fruits and veggies 😭❤️

Did not realize jolly time had white pop corn! I love the Orville reddenbachers tender white. That is usually the kind I buy if I buy microwave or bag/container. Thanks!
