I see that most of us that need them agree that fans are something that is a must. But if it looks like if the lighting fixture came from the flippin Roman empire, not so much. (Don’t think about that too much.) it’s not like he’s asking us to get rid of garden gnomes that have now invaded our interiors … Now that’s something I think I can live without. Ha ha …

Hi Kiva, on behalf of all the hip grandmas that are subscribers who adore you, please stop categorizing us! Fran, I definitely should and could have put it better! My grandma is super hip and we joke about it this way, but I acknowledge it came across as ageist and that’s definitely wrong of me. I’m really sorry about that! I should’ve said “older, dated” interiors instead. Age has no correlation with style! My grandma is more stylish than me and she’s 82. I hope that you’ll be able to forgive me. I’m sorry, again. 💕

I spent months searching online for the perfect sofa that would arrive in 6-10 months. Ordered a few, returned them, and almost gave up. Drove past a custom sofa shop near me. Went in on a whim, made our design and for a few hundred more than what I was looking at online, I had a unique local kiln dried hardwood sofa in the exact color, dimensions, and style I was looking for in just 2 months. It also feels great knowing I am supporting local artisans and small businesses. The quality is so much better than anything online and everyone who sits on the sofa says it’s the most comfortable and stylish sofa they’ve ever sat on. Definitely don’t count custom out esp for high quality pieces you want for years to come and use daily.

Vintage is a problem when it’s used in an over consumptive way. I have to say though, my vintage pieces that I’ve now had for decades are the ones that have had staying power despite changing trends. It’s the stuff I purchased to reflect trends that wore out quickly or I got tired of. For example, the 1930s table I purchased in the 1990s is used every day and still looks great. It continues to make the cut every time I edit my interior.
@alleyinn1

How do you define "overcomsumption"? If one is saving money and net spending is SIGNIFICANTLY less (while getting better stuff)... and not contributing to waste & fast furniture, how is it overconsumption? Or are you suggesting is somehow just somehow morally or ethically bad to acquire things regardless of cost? The argument against over consumption is rooted in concerns about financial health, environmental impact, and contribution to capitalist greed. All of these are averted at the thrift store so pls help me understand how "overconsumption is overconsumption"?

@me2u705

Glamohemian, it would be kind of the socially conscious thrifters to keep in mind that actual low-income people rely on the items at thrift stores. With increased demand for used furniture, clothing, appliances, etc., prices have gone up. Low income people have been priced out of the market by “people who care” without caring. Not saying this is you, but many people who are opposed to overconsumption must think they’re keeping furniture and clothing out of landfills. The great finds they’re snagging wouldn’t have ended up there anyway.
@alleyinn1

@me2u705 I have been shopping PRIMARILY from the thrift store for 35 years. This is not a trend for me. And Im not going to stop bc its become a trend for the mainstream. Also, I've heard mixed things about whether its harmful or helpful since these organizations are now generating bigger profits that they can use to support community needs.

I find container organizing necessary, as I am a neat freak, and my husband does not even come close. We downsized to an apartment almost 5 years ago. The fridge is a side by side fridge/freezer, not a fan but that's what we have. I just recently bought a set of plastic organizers, as the freezer became a time bomb! Weekly, I would arrange, so we knew what we had, maybe it would last 2 days, as my hubby NEVER puts anything back where it came from, and is a total rummager, I He however dose not like to throw anything away, especially food. Showing him the freezer burned and expired food, when I was organizing, and put like foods in each bin I think something actually clicked, after 57 years. It has been about 5 weeks, and I open the door, nothing falls out, I can pull a bin and see what I need to cook/ buy, have not thrown out one thing. I will never again be without them. I did the same thing in my makeshift pantry. no more redoing every other day, no more complaints from me about finding stuff, no more from hubby about waste.

Many videos in my feed now are tiny and studio apartments. Yes. I can get some good ideas for decor tips and furniture placement but how many times have the Brooklyn studio renter told us that they splurged on some ridiculously pricey couch to make it their focal point. I have to agree with most of what you said. However, I have a problem with all these influencers and designers who keep talking about grandmas house!!! First of all I don’t give a darn what my grandkids think about my decorating decisions since they have no taste or influence on anything. Their houses look like your stepping into a Pottery Barn or Restoration Hardware store. Not to say it’s ugly, but extremely boring and unimaginative. Growing up, our regular morning routine the first night of a sleep over at Grandma's was to count her houseplants. Never less than 30. She had a big cascading spider plant hanging in her side bedroom window as a privacy barrier against the neighbours. I was never a big spider plant fan but, to remember my grandmother, I have a 5 tier spider plant basket hanging on my balcony from a plant I got 30 years ago. (4 tiers of babies with babies with babies) I also have several other hanging baskets and planters full and have finally learned to root and pass on the babies. I'm now a grandmother and can see my grandchildren growing up thinking I love spider plants and having their own to remind them of me. 🙂

I currently live in Texas (DFW) and purchased a two story home. I am also hot natured. If it's above 76° it's hot to me. I must have ceiling fans and fans. Plus, it can't imagine not being able to have the air circulation. The house would get stuffy. I also agree with you on the faux vs real plants. I would love to have real plants. I've tried purchasing real plants and wasted too much because they either died or my Labradoodle's pups (both under 2 and 60 lbs) got into them. I would rather purchase an expensive faux plant that will last me forever instead since i was not born with a green thumb!

Your discussion of real vs fake tree is SO timely. I have a spot in my living room and I'm shopping tomorrow for the pot and later for the tree. At first, I thought it had to be real. If I'm doing this, it has to be a real tree. But as I spent more time thinking, the cons seemed to outweigh the pros for a real tree. Heavy. Requires a large pot full of dirt that I couldn't easily move. And I have cats. What if they become TOO curious and attracted to the real plant and the real dirt? Possible death. If I spend a lot of money on a quality fake, it will last a long time. If I spend a lot of money on large real tree and it dies? Well, big LO$$ for me. I'm signing up for team faux.

Kiva your advice is so realistic. When I think of custom I think of items like doors and windows. Even window treatments can be custom depending on the measurements. I'm with ya on the thrift store look. It isn't for everybody. I've seen great pieces of furniture ruined this way as well. You can curate things you won't find at big box stores but it is not sustainable if it ends up in z landfill. Ceiling fans, not getting rid of it. I believe we should buy timeless and use them for as long as they last.

Couple points: One of your counterparts did say to get rid of ceiling fans, and oh boy did those of us in the South give our thoughts on that idea. My electric bill is high enough in the summer, no ceiling fans would make it unaffordable. The whole thing with wallpaper, nope, not doing wallpaper. I had to strip the ugly 90's era peach and teal borders off so many walls. I never fully got the paper off the walls in our kitchen. It came out with the drywall when we renovated. As for organizing, I think the best advice I heard from one of those organization channels was, "you can't storage container your way out of clutter. You just have to get rid of stuff." Now I just need to get rid of stuff.

@@jms1086 Yes! Peel and stick wallpaper is really available these days, and many brands remove quite cleanly (especially if you heat them a bit with a hair dryer) if you decide you want to change the look of your space, or if you want to take your wallpaper down at a rental, restick it to the backing paper you kept, and take it to your next home for re-use. Peel and stick tiles for backsplashes or flooring are also popular and can help a rental feel more like a space of your own.

Love you and your videos Kiva!❤ Etsy is a good place to look for faux plants too. I ended up getting a couple of really nice, very tall Bird of Paradise tress for my sitting room. They look gorgeous and my dog can't get into any dirt and make a mess all over my house like he would when I had a real one.😅🐶🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾

Hi from Toronto, Kiva! Every week you look better and better. Great work❤️. I put ceiling fans in every bedroom, the family room, and in the ceiling of our patio under the terrace. The bedroom fans are beautiful, sleek, white, remote controlled, absolutely silent, and indispensible in every season. Every fan has an integral light. And, I LOVE wallpaper! I have used it judiciously in the powder room and my main halls and stairwell, over wainscoting. Frankly, I don’t care it it’s in style or not. Speaking of lime wash - there’s wallpaper, including strippable wallpaper, that mimics it. It gives the look without the pain, expense, and permanence. As for custom furniture, I grew up in the furniture business. “Custom” is a crapshoot. I have never seen a custom piece that’s so much more wonderful than is available ready-made, somewhere (although many high end furniture manufacturers have disappeared in the last few years, sadly). Many designers push custom work because they get a percentage of the price, which helps explain why it is so inflated. Thank you for your fabulous videos.

Thank you Kiva, for telling us it is Ok to keep our ceiling fans! I live in Georgia, so it is hot a humid 9 months out of the year, and we could not live without them. We have them in the living room, kitchen , and above out bed, where we could NOT sleep without it - central air conditioning is not enough. I know they can be ugly, and I would love to replace them with a pretty light fixture, but we would die! Love your Vlogs.

Faux plants are hard to dust. I regretted buying mine a while back. Snake plants are hard to kill and require very little water and light. Money trees and bamboo require watering once a week but are also hard to kill. It comes down to maintenance either way, so pick what you find easier to do with your schedule.

The electric, vintage style. ... This is what i began to go towards when I decided no pressboard, no MDF, as little plastic as possible, as little off-gassing as possible, and as few fumes in case of a fire as possible. I did like some new, honestly real wood but my wallet couldn't afford it. I have had some very nice, all wood, vintage to antique pieces over the years; I think some have been upto "very nice".

About real trees indoors... terrible idea, so I agree with you Kiva. Soil/dirt belongs outside the house, NOT inside the house. Even house plants bring in lots of dirty, moldy soil, inside the house. I do not want fake, plastic, as that manufacturing is so bad for the environment, and they never look real. So I use fresh cut flowers or fresh cut budding branches ... the only clean choice. No dirt filled house plants inside. Keep real trees and plants, outside in the dirt, where they belong. Fresh cut real flowers or budding branches do not have to be expensive, if you grow some outside. And an inexpensive small bouquet of REAL flowers, even from a grocery store, is so beautiful and special. My son brings his wife a small bouquet of fresh flowers, every week from the grocery store for years. Even a bowl of real fruit, like lemons, on the counter, brings nature inside. Real, Dried eucalyptus always is nice too. ps. I even think the idea of having a tree inside a house for xmas is a weird idea. I know the idea started centuries ago , with queen Victoria, when wealthy people, had huge houses and servants to clean up the mess. I do decorate so the house is very festive, but have moved past putting a tree, real or fake, inside the house.

It feels so good to have your blessing about faux plants. I love plants, but I do not want to take care of them, worrying about too much water, not enough water, soil pH, leaves falling all over the place, bugs, too much sunlight, not enough sunlight, it grows too big for the location -- as nauseum. I wish I could have real plants in my house but they are REALLY not my forte, and I do NOT want to be killing anything. I even feel the same way about cut flowers. I am now going to go out in search of some excellent quality fake plants. Thank you!

Lol but I decided to sit down and watch an episode or two and can I say I want to marry you, but I don’t think it’ll work for either one of us. Wink wink, I’d love the fact that you are so honest with your thoughts on aesthetics and styles and you keep it 100%. I am team real tree. I cannot do fake, in the south ,big windows they would melt everywhere. And I so appreciate everything you said about ceiling fans , I’ve seen some designers say take them down there ugly and outdated, well come down south when it reaches 100° and see how much good that chandelier does you. like you said styles and options boo, Styles and Options. Thanks again for all that you’ve given us I’m a fan boy forever.

Totally agree on the fans. We just built a new home. During the pandemic, a friend needed a new hobby and taught herself antique chandelier refurbishing. (You wouldn't believe how much $$$ she's making now - all word of mouth only.) We have two of her customs now that we love, but did ceiling fans in rooms where made sense - and love them too. There are so many beautiful options that look like ceiling art fixtures rather than something utilitarian. P.S. Kiva, when you gave suggestions for faux plant sources, did you say "Our House" or "Art House"? I'm googling both, but am probably mishearing/misspelling. Thanks!

I love my pretty acrylic pantry containers and oxo :(( also, fake plants for life! I keep my live plants outdoors, Our house had a huge insect problem before we moved in because the previous owners had so many live plants, we travel a lot, which means the real plants would die or suffer, our faux plants will never die. Just seeing greenery is good for the soul. Thank you for not judging those of us who love faux plants.

I’m already an organized type of person, and unfortunately I’ve found that certain containers work better than others depending on the context.
