A habit crane ops can fall into is not listening to commands of a green rigger, this destroys any confidence they did have and does nothing for their future. If you dont like something there doing correct them but dont free lance.

Too right man, that's good advice. I've been a green dogman for a good, patient operator who was willing to let me build my skills and I learned more and learned faster by getting listened to. It's about respect and respect goes both was when it's working properly. Thanks for good content

Having an operator not listen to stop is downright scary. I understand when using a whistle getting all the commands out can be a little slower, however stop means stop no matter what. Once the crane is stopped you can sort everything out. Love the videos Del, very helpful for a green doggy

Copy copy a yea ya! Mate been a rigger for some time now keeping busy helps the day go faster, although I’ve been on mine sites lng and coal construction sites shutdowns dragline, power, lead smelters aluminium refineries and city construction to name a few!My point here is all the years 98% of my operators have been great and stopped when they themselves saw something not right which makes a dream team. It goes both ways especially when no los can be maintained! I like to give clear concise instructions and to voice a visual image- “3 meters to the hand, two, one in the hand, meter to touch, halfa, touching now” if unsure ask lads! Uppa a yea ya keep the awesome posts bruv

Trainer and assessor for HRWL here. Every day just trying to be that person I needed when I was starting out in the game, instead of just getting yelled at and demeaned. Just be supportive of the new guys and girls- it'll come back to you in spades. And yeah, as Del said, give them the chance to see their mistakes and some feedback to improve. ✌️

One thing I was told when I was green was if the operator starts doing his own thing STOP THE CRANE. Walk up to the cab and tell the operator to get out. When the operator asks why tell him that you’re tagging out the crane cause it’s moving by itself

There’s so much subtle psychology to being a crane operator or a rigger that most people don’t consciously think about or express verbally. Its great that you can put this into words for people in the industry to really get think about.👍

I absolutely agree. Had an operator who I literally handed the radio back to him and told him I am going to the lunch room as he was 100% freestyling. His reason “ I could see the whole lift so I did not need instructions” I have made many mistakes and love it when the operator prevents me from making stuff ups. It goes both ways.

Absolutely bro . Its about nuturing trust . Love your vids and shares , i feel you might have added in this and the next one the important fact that if there was an incident , especially on the blind...it wouldnt matter if at the end of the day if the rigger was green ,the fact the operator didnt listen ....its about team work and kicking goals together as a team....same rules apply for excited know it all green operators that somehow in the excitement of pushing buttons and puling levers forget their roots. Onyah bro , keep them posts comming , your input is appreciated , much love 💜

Operator should listen most of the time because sometimes he might not see something the rigger can see about the load. I say most of the time because if rigger is green, he might be giving really bad commands which might damage pick once it's in the air

This advice is exactly what my 1st crane operator needed. He wouldn't listen to me or my other slinger.. Him and the supervisor knew each other for a long time so they worked well with each other. Luckily I haven't met an operator like it since! As of tomorrow I'm finally on the levers too, that's how I found your channel, much appreciated for the good content bro👍🏼

This is 100% right, when I started as a dogman I had a crane driver winch up without me giving any command I was hooked by my overalls to a sharp piece of steel because I couldn't jump out of the way fast enough as I was not expecting the load to move he lifted me about 2.5m in the air before I fell to the ground he could have killed me...... always wait for the command it's the purpose of having a dogman.

This video resonates with me deeply. 4 years ago i at 21 years old started working at a machinery company with 0 experience with Franna cranes or even any cranes for that matter. Part of the job was being dogman or rigger for my boss, moving caterpillar parts around our yard and loading trucks with the MAC25 Franna crane. I’m always the dogman because i dont have my crane ticket. I got a crash course from my boss, (the operator)in hand signals. He’s been driving small and big cranes for easily 20 years, lots of experience for one of Australias largest heavy construction companies, driving huge cranes. He’ll say “come over here and help me move this Dozer blade to the display area bruz!” But only follows half of my hand signals. It really frustrates me when he doesn’t listen to my hand signals, makes me feel fucking worthless and embarrassed and shoots my confidence right in the arse. He’s a good guy but problem is he knows he’s a damn good crane operator and most of the time he can see the load clearly so just run his own race. But still. It’s the principle of the matter. Dont get me to rig for you and help you pickup and place things down on the ground or trucks and then disregard all my help that you’ve asked for in the first place.

It’s also a safety thing, I’m a green rigger still learning I get things wrong or give the wrong command but knowing the crane is going to help and also listen and doing the commands knowing it is wrong helps me correct my mistakes and I learn from it. I had one crane operator who know I was green as hell when I give him my command he radio me “ask am I sure” I looked my load than look at what I’m doing I saw what I did wrong was really helpful and help with keeping my confidence. I had one crane operator that saw I did something wrong and radio over swearing at me telling had do something wrong and that I’m shit at my job but didn’t tell me what I did wrong after that I lost all confidence keep asking the other rigger to check my load and how should do thing ( the rigger was happy help but I could tell he was getting annoyed by the end but he could see I had no confidence after what had happened ) the crane operator and rigger both knew at the start of the shift that I was green as well I’m all honestly about my skills and ability because safety comes first.

I totally agree with this. Buuuuuut! Lol when your under the pump in general hire and he gives you directions and you can see that it will cause damage and it’s not what you need to be doing, sometimes you don’t have the luxury of time to get out or call him/her over and explain the intricacies of what needs to be done so you end up just jibbing down a little bit or correcting the slew ect ect. I have been in both positions green and operator. I always listen to commands and do not freelance.. but sometimes when they are green and they’re taking sooooo long to do things and you don’t have time to show them you just gotta do what you gotta do. Then when we’re in the cab together I explain why I did what I did and then explain how to work smarter and faster. But totally agree Dell! ✌🏻 peace out ah yeh ya

First of all, make sure it’s rigged properly. Go slow and take your time, don’t let people rush you and don’t feel like you need to impress people with how fast you can do it. Make sure you’re consistently watching your rigging, the head of the boom and the fleet of your cable, and the tailing end of the beam on the ground. Keep the boom and load line centered over your pick point as best as possible, you don’t want to side load the boom or sheeves.

Had a Crane operator almost take my head off a few times with a beam. One quck story. Crane operator got in an argument with the supervisor over the next load to be moved. Meanwhile im up in the trying to connect the previous load. The load is level with my chest. The end of the beam a foot or less from my chin. (A tight spot to connect in) Supervisor at the cab having a discussion with the operator. Operator gets mad, yanks up on the line and prepares to set the load back down ....and yes quit. That beeam missed the bottom of my chin by two or three inches. Thats just one story. Pissing people off on the jobsite for laughs can get people hurt or killed. Yelling and arguing helps no one on the jobsite.

No mate it’s not recommended. Because the equaliser sheaves inside the boom start tensioning up well before the 3rd section visually moves out. There is a pin hole on the top of the 2nd section where you can stow the winch rope when working off the rhino hook. Easy to do and it keeps everything out of your way! ✌🏻

Look mate it goes both ways, shit operators, shit riggers, good riggers, good operators. Even though I am confident on my hook ups, I am open minded and work with the operator and I still ask the question because there is many ways to skin a cat and I don't stop learning. Nothing worse than an over confident arrogant rigger or crane operator. You never stop learning and ask the question. "Don't be arrogant because arrogance kills curiosity and passion." - Mina Bissell
