Thanks for your wonderful explanation, I think there is an exception to the uncountable noun rule , “Dank” is an uncountable masculine noun , however ; when it’s modified( quantified) by the ( viel) word ,the viel word should take the declension endings according to the case of Dank Example: Accusative case : vielEN Dank (Haben Sie) meaning ( Have much gratitude)
@GermanwithLaura
@GermanwithLaura 6 ай бұрын
We could think of this is being an exception, but alternatively, if we think of ‘Dank’ as meaning ‘thanks’ (collective masculine) and that meaning, therefore, ‘many thanks’, (and I would contend that these are the better translations) then, in this instance ‘viel’ is functioning not as a zero word (‘a lot’), but as an adjective* (‘many’) which is then the reason why it’s taking the strong ‘n’ declension. * To really split hairs, I think of this instance of ‘viel’ as being a rule-breaker determiner not an adjective, but ‘adjective’ would be the most common parlance. The word ‘viel’ is a multi-use word and can function as zero word, determiner, adjective…. It all depends on the exact context!

@@GermanwithLaura I hesitated to translate it as "thanks" , it's described as " kine Mehrzal " meaning " no plural " in the (Wortbedeutung.info) dictionary, That's why I think "gratitude " (uncountable noun) is a better equivalent, Sorry for being scrupulous about this, since I can speak multiple other languages, I tend to dig deep from the get-go particularly grammatical and phonological aspects of the languages, I just started learning German about two months ago , your video learn german smarter not harder is the best eye-opener,your declension table is concise and fabulous, keep doing what you're doing, have a nice time

I think it goes better for my own personal remembering when I think of it as viele=many and viel =much (like with the "friends" example, you can still have a lot of friends), but funny how I was just trying to consider this the other day.

Great content, Thanks. However, 'viel' can be used as adverb meaning 'a lot' --> Früher hat sie ihre Mutter viel besucht. = She used to visit her mother a lot.
@GermanwithLaura
@GermanwithLaura 4 ай бұрын
Yes, thanks for mentioning this. In German, the word 'viel' can indeed be used as an adverb to mean 'a lot.' Your example sentence is correct and in this context, 'viel' functions as an adverb modifying the verb 'besucht' (visited) to indicate the frequency or extent of the visits. - Nicole, GwL Team

Since you started learning German at 14 I have a follow-up question -- do native German speakers hear an American accent in your German when they listen to you? As I understand things, if someone starts learning a language at age 9 or older an accent is almost guaranteed, but if you begin earlier than 9 you may learn to speak without any detectable accent.
