Why bother with them? When there's so many better looking fish out there I wouldn't want 1 risking disease to my aquarium

Great summary! I never had problems with Copperband however. My fish eats like a pig. I feed frozen brine shrimp and bloodworm. Copperband is the most “intelligent” fish in my tank. She can recognize me and can communicate with me with happy dancing.

Mine is my favorite fish ever and I am a complete beginner :) I started picking fish based on your strategies instead of picking just 'easy' species. Picking individual fish at a store has made me go from hunger strikes and mysterious deaths to all 14 of my fish being over a year now and 0 being sick or dead. A lot of them I knew for a bit before getting them and that seemed to go stupidly well. Perks of working at a pet store part time in school lol

My Norman is nearly 3 yrs old and he eats like a champ. He's in a tank with greedy Tangs so I taught him to eat from a floating ring now he feeds the Tangs as they wait for him to cause some to fall. He loves both frozen and dried mysis, other meaty frozen foods and store bought cans of minced clams. I got him huge and he holds his own he's like a puppy dog, love him the most!

The amount that don't make it should really mean we don't import then anymore. Whilst there are a lucky few I just don't think it's the right thing to do compared to the amount that die.😔

I belive that its 1 the retailer 2 the owner . If retailers either value added by the 7 day procces to get a copper on other foods or dont sell to novice aquarists . And if fish keepers actually researched and followed guides there would be little loss. But being humans thats unlikely so yep your probably right

Not my experience yet. I'm in my second CB, the first lasted 6yrs. I went almost a year without, aptaisia explosion. I happened to come across one that someone had just left in to my lfs, it was nipping his acans, he had it for 4yrs. I bought it right away, almost no aptaisia left after 1 month. Maybe my fav. fish, not dumb at all.

you're comment about some Copperband's only preferring one brand of frozen was exactly my comment recently on Ultimate Reef, I fortunately have found the sweet spot for my Copperband, but I read and hear so much bad news about these fish, like anything in this hobby, you are trying to replicate an environment wild caught fish and corals come from, hopefully you are lucky as I have been with my Copperband, but they say every tank is different, much like every reef around the globe, it's finding that sweet spot

I’m 1/1 with copperband success. I tried various foods with no luck then saw on Nathan Willard’s channel he suggested masstick. Because masstick can be stuck on the glass he had time to copy the other fish before they ate the lot. Once he tasted it once that was it. I did this for a couple of weeks then made something I could stick to the glass and put masstick in and only he could get to it. Fast forward a year he eats mysis and gets excited when I put nori in. He pushes the other tangs out the way like he wants some and then swims the length of the tank to his masstick device as by then I have put a little in for him. I wrote all this before watching your video 🤣🤣

One thing that really irritates me about the saltwater side of the hobby is the obsession with removing nutrients before everything has settled and used the nutrients. In my opinion protein skimmers are the worst invention ever added into the hobby because of there misuse. People use them in place of a large refugium with tons of plants and micro organisms for their fish to eat copperband butterflyfish would have next to no issues in a system with a large refugium with a copapod breeding colony in it. Also the plants in a refugium do the same thing as a protein skimmer in the end plus supply food for copapods and other micro life.

Mine mainly eats frozen bloodworms so everyone in the tank gets a good dose of them every day. They all seem to enjoy them though. Agree they are smart, she's very intent when she looks at things, and enjoys searching for food on the rocks.

Copperbands are easy if you have a bunch of established fish that will demonstrate eating aquarium food. I should mention that I feed a variety of frozen foods. No dried food at all.

A copperband isnt dumb. They have evolved a niche feeding style. Theres only a few fish that can compete with a copper for its chosen food hence unlike a tang who has to be intensely competitive they are way more relaxed. Their brain has evolved just as the physical attributes have to feed on very particular foods hence generalisation is not in their skill set. Not dumb buddy

The best way to have no copper bands die is nit buy them plain and simple. Why can’t people learn from so many deaths. It’s been 29+ years in the hobby and I learned very fast to avoid buying this beauty from slow death. These fish should be left on the reef
