In this video I demonstrate how to convert an inexpensive manual treadmill from Amazon into a backward walking treadmill to help strengthen or repair your damaged knees.
Treadmill SF-T1407M:
amzn.to/3SmiISK
Backrest Pad (alternate to locally sourced pipe insulation):
amzn.to/3UCqEBL
3M Door Stops (2 Pack):
amzn.to/3UoF3l1
3M Felt Pads (Use the White/Beige Material):
amzn.to/3HGl49U
**NOTE** The treadmill may arrive heavily oiled. Be sure to remove oil residue from flywheels, or you will not be able to generate enough resistance.

‼️ When the treadmill arrives there will be a thin film of oil on the flywheels. Make sure you clean away this oil before installing the wedges or you will not be able to achieve sufficient resistance ‼️

Hats off, Friend... I am grateful. I have been asking this question everywhere, and people kept saying it is unsafe, so I hesitated to invest in it. In this economy, every little helps. I was looking to buy the ATG one, but it comes with an extra tax & shipping as I don't live in the US. Thanks will try your suggestions.

Great question! Some of the off-brand felt pads I tested wore out after a week or two. But the 3M pads shown in the video are MUCH better - so far they show no signs of wear. **UPDATE** 2 months later and my original pads with 3M felt are holding up great!

It’s not comical, when you make something with quality parts it costs money 🤷🏽‍♀️ if you have it great, I sure don’t…. But I know when I buy a cheap shirt from shein that it’s only going to withstand a handful of washes then it’s trash.
@Ben-pk4cv
@Ben-pk4cv Ай бұрын
You can become a member for $24.50 and then purchase it for $480. If ATG were a large fitness equipment operation, then I'm sure it would be cheaper. Maybe $299.95.
@Ben-pk4cv
@Ben-pk4cv Ай бұрын
People can also look into The Tib Bar Guy's Sled Tred. It's built for several exercises so it costs more but it does more. I don't know of any more options out there that aren't way more expensive.

Thanks for the video! Just assembled mine yesterday with the modifications! For now the only thing I was thinking about changing is the distance of the backrest. It seems to be too far out so when I sit on it and try to push with the toes, I’m almost on the end of the treadmill. I think by drilling new holes on the railing near the « corners », I could gain 4 inches or so and shift sone weight more to the center too and I wont feel like having a chance to flip on the back.

👍info. Please could you advice..if a flat treadmill would be better for real weak knees and seniors.
@CosmologicalNonsense
@CosmologicalNonsense 2 ай бұрын
I haven’t personally tried a flat treadmill, so I’m not positive. I could envision a flat treadmill being slightly harder because the one in the video is actually declined (since you’re facing backwards) allowing your body weight to help keep it moving rather than just your knees and legs pushing it.

This is awesome! Thank you so much for this. I was literally on the check out window for the atg treadmill when I saw this. I think this is a great alternative. There is only a beige pad from 3M, is that what you mean for the white one?

Do you think it is possible to drill through the metal to create a hole for the fold up knob? Since the legs are installed reversed, the fold up knob holes don’t line up.

Thank you for showing such a cool hack. Is the resistance with the felt pads similar to a dead treadmill? Would you ever want more resistance?
@CosmologicalNonsense
@CosmologicalNonsense 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! I’ve never tried walking on an electric treadmill turned off, so I’m not sure how this compares. So far this hack has provided plenty of resistance for me. I’ve been using it daily for about 2 months, and have not felt the need to increase the resistance (although I could probably push the wedges even further into the gap to get more resistance if necessary).
@ericrasyidi
@ericrasyidi 3 ай бұрын
Great! I bought a used treadmill and your instructions were perfect. I bought a $9 squat bar pad instead of a pool foam. A little more money but the padding is comfortable and you don't have to cut/alter the squat pad. It slides right on. The resistance is a little less than a deadmill but you can alter the tension by crouching down or probably adding a felt pad on top of the first pad. Thank you for sharing this amazing hack!@@CosmologicalNonsense

How has this held up for you so far thinking about investing in one of these vs the ATG one
@CosmologicalNonsense
@CosmologicalNonsense Ай бұрын
It’s held up great so far. I was told by one user they couldn’t get the resistance high enough with this hack, so they preferred the ATG unit, but for me this resistance is plenty. My legs are gassed after 10 minutes. I suspect the user didn’t clean the oil off his flywheels before inserting the wedges. The treadmill arrives with a thin coat of oil on everything that must be cleaned before inserting the wedges.

what muscles does walking like this strengthen ?
@CosmologicalNonsense
@CosmologicalNonsense 5 ай бұрын
Studies show that walking backward engages the vastus medialis oblique (VMO) muscle which helps control how the kneecap moves and also provides stability within the knee. Thanks for watching!

Looks like you’re too far towards the top of the mill in cant get a proper Backstep. I would’ve just flipped the top bar around so that the loop portion is facing forward, pushing you more towards the middle of the treadmill.

Another guy I talked with drilled a new hole for the locking pin. I just fold it up and don’t use the locking pin, as it seems to stay upright OK without it lol.
@FitandFlexible
@FitandFlexible 4 ай бұрын
in the video, you seem to be nearly sitting...do you feel like you are getting more of a burn/workout like this compared to standing upright ?
@CosmologicalNonsense
@CosmologicalNonsense 4 ай бұрын
When I stand fully upright with high treadmill resistance, my whole body fatigues rather quickly. I can only stand upright with high resistance for a few minutes. But when I lean back (nearly sit), I am able to better isolate the lower quad muscles that help stabilize the knee (mainly the VMO). This allows me to target those muscles for a longer period of time (10 minutes each time). I would suggest that people try different forms to see what works best for them. It took a while to figure out what works best for me, as it all feels a little unnatural at first.
@FitandFlexible
@FitandFlexible 4 ай бұрын
@@CosmologicalNonsense yes, so you are definitely getting a better result, nearly sitting...when I stand & walk backwards on my treadmill, no setting/speed gives me a great resistance, so nearly sitting feels its way better at targeting muscles around the knee
