I find a good tip to deal with over saturation is once you think you're done editing, drag the saturation slider all the way down to zero and then slowly bring it back up to where you were before, sometimes you'll realize it's better to stop before that point a few notches
@Falcrist

Making sure you always compare the edited version with the original is another important habit. It's easy to go too far with saturation, but also with contrast, exposure, highlights, etc

Common one for me: setting the circular polarizer to remove glare when taking a landscape with water, then rotating the camera, but forgetting to rotate the polarizer
@lesswetstu
@lesswetstu 2 жыл бұрын
My most common mistake: Sometimes I'll put the camera on a tripod so I can take HDR/Panoramic landscape shots, but I don't have my remote with me so I'll set the shutter release on a 2 second delay to prevent camera shake in the image. But then, I'll forget to turn the delay back off, so when I go to take a handheld image again, I'll hit the shutter button and nothing will happen for 2 seconds.

Underexposure issues due to Sony applying dynamic range corrections to the viewfinder view, AND the file playback, only to find the raw files horrendously underexposed (sometimes almost past the point of recovery). That was an obscure setting that took months to find. Only happened in situations with strong contrasts, so it wasn't consistent, and you couldn't rely on the live histogram to tell you the real story. It was a very obscure setting name in the Sony menus.

Good video! I took up photography a few years ago and primarily shoot bike racing. It can move really fast and I often find myself rushing and forgetting to change settings between different scenes, or taking panning shots and forgetting to switch my lens to the panning mode. Or if I’m lucky I’ll remember to switch it for the panning shots, but then forgot to switch it back off when going back to standard mode. For me, I have to learn to slow down and check settings before being quick to push that shutter button. I like your tip about using the notes app - simple but effective. . I paused the video at that point and immediately jotted down a few reminders to help minimize my most frequent mistakes. Thanks for another good video.

best advice you gave was really take a break from your edits before coming back to it.. I simply do that for every single edit I do, I NEVER send any photos to my client before a night of rest between my edits and the next one. there is ALWAYS something wrong with the first edit, and it's so easy to spot on the second run cos it's obvious but you're either tired or tunnel focus that you miss the obvious.. what I like to do to shorten that up is once I'm done, I just go back to the first photo and usually I can already spot the mistakes because I gradually improved the edit throughout all the pictures.. and by the time I got to the last one I usually have a good grip of the edit I wanted for that batch.. so going back to the first one I see the mistake, either it's too saturated or whatever, it will show.. so yeah, never rush to post something or send to the client, never ever.

I have made plenty of dumb mistakes. I once had to turn on custom white balance for an interior with terribly yellow light. Then I went to the beach and ruined 30+ shots before I noticed everything was blue. And I once overexposed in edit because the laptop screen was very dark. The last time I used it, the laptop battery was low so I turned down the brightness to save energy. And forgot to turn it up later.

Same mistake for me. Shooting interior with WB set for fluorescent lighting and image review off. Later in the week went to the PGA at Hazeltine and forgot to change back. The shots were terrible until I figured it out. Luckily I noticed it before I was able to get some close up shots of Tiger on the practice green. The real mistake was only shooting JPEG and not RAW.

It took over 25 years for me to do this but I showed up on a shoot with bags, need cameras in bags in order to qualify as camera bags. Had all equipment out the night before cleaning bodies, lenses, charging camera batteries, flash batteries, checking to make sure I had all rigging needed, checking modifiers, ring mounts, etc. put it all back in rolling cases but left bodies on the table to install 100% batteries in the morning before shoot. Oops. Put batteries in them, had helper show up at the door and forgot to add bodies into my backpacks. Everyone had a good laugh, even me although I am sure my complexion was bright red from the embarrassment!

Thank you for the reminder to bring and use a good tripod. No matter what you shoot with, IBIS or not, there is no excuse for not having a stable platform to shoot from. It may look "old fashioned' or "dorky" but it works! Depending on IBIS or lens stabilization for sharp images is like depending on a driverless car. You are going to have to take control sometime.

For white birds you should use the Sony "HTP" instead: "High Tone Priority". It's an metering mode that makes sure your picture contains all high tones. Of course the image will look dark in the viewfinder or on the display as you review it but you can be sure you'll be able to restore the highlights in post. I use this metering mode all the times in case something very bright is in the picture.
@guitarsan
@guitarsan Жыл бұрын
Canon calls it HTP, for Sony, it’s just Highlight metering mode. In any case, this is most useful when the subject is the brightest tone in the frame.

My mistakes are pretty common. And I can pretty much pair it down to one simple flaw. Impatience. I'm always in a rush with no time to double-check anything. This often leads to problems like leaving the cap on, or not paying attention to the tripod on the rare occasions I use one. But the biggest is with the camera settings. I'll occasionally, just once or twice, take the time to really set up and test a shot, making sure the exposure is right, using manual mode to tweak it until I like it, then suddenly there is a cool shot I absolutely must get and I forget it's in Manual mode and I take an 8-second exposure indoors, or overexpose a deer jumping through the tall grass next to the road. I only have a basic refurb and kit lens so there isn't much for me to keep track of, and what little there is for me to keep track of I never manage to do successfully. Except for fireworks, fireworks are easy. Probably one of the few times the "spray and pray" method is valid, especially from tripod. I'm also definitely a poor editor. I never know what I want. So I brighten, saturate and call it good.

The hardest lesson for me was less is more especially keeping shots simple and avoid over processing. The only time I use a tripod for video or 4x5 view cameras. I think that was one of the reasons I became a photojournalist. The funniest one was a friend of mine who needed help and insisted that I bring my portable studio lights for a shot, I kept telling him it was overkill for the shot, when all we needed was a sb units and the Nikon Creative Lighting System. He kept on insisting he wanted to put on a show for the client. The images were okay but he knew they could be better and complained to me. I simply explained that is what you get when you use the wrong tool for a job. BTW I carry three extra batteries paranoid enough for you and I avoid the lens cap issue by only using the rear cap.

You could lump all of these things together into the category of preparation. Be sure everything is prepared- batteries charged, camera settings correct, tripod properly set up, etc. Of you could go one step back and lump everything into the category of work. You have to put the work in to get the shot, the work of preparation, the work of finding the site, the work of waiting for the light, the work of framing the shot, all of the things that we don't want to do but are essential. Sometimes a person will happen upon perfect location/framing/light without putting in the work but usually a good shot reflects the work that was put in up front. (And for the record I don't like doing the work and my body resists, but I know that I have to step back and put in the work if I want good results.)

I may be late to the conversation. But I can’t seem to find a fix to this. Sometimes I’ll have images on my camera that look correctly exposed. But I find that when I import them into Lightroom. They are bad up under exposed. Is there a setting that I am missing?
@nerdnam
@nerdnam 2 жыл бұрын
Could be because the camera monitor is too bright or too dark. You should check the histogram for exposure because monitors are not reliable.

I have done things like bringing a camera out without a SD card or using a dummy battery. It happens all the time because I do timelapses of plants at home and I have to plug it in with a dummy battery. Forgetting to bring an SD card happens when I just go halfway through editing photos and leave plugged in the computer. Now I have spare cards in every bag I have, the two camera bags have lots of cheaper cards, I even keep one in the backpack I daily use, which is not a camera bag, in case I decided last moment to grab a camera with me for a walk and leave the card at home.

Using third party flash shoe covers on Canon cameras - they may disable the internal flash as the camera thinks you have an external one. 2:56 I did that always on EOS M. When shooting in artificial light I had to turn the white balance 7-9 steps towards blue. Then the next time I shot in daylight and everything was blue.I would like a feature where the camera resets the settings each night to some user preset default (of course this will not help with mechanical dials)

You may have something similar buried in the menus. On my Pentax I think it is called memory settings and in it you can select for various things whether they reset to default when you turn off/on the camera. I like to have the EV compensation, drive mode and various other things reset each time I switch off. Occasionally it works against me but in many more cases it saves the day. I also have a number of named user modes set, which override all the settings giving me a know starting point. Its like going to default factory settings except there are fives sets of them and I get to chose what they are. If I get stuck and I'm wasting too much time trying to find out what is wrong I'll just default to the nearest one to what I want to do and either just shoot (if In a big hurry) or start from there and move to what I want the settings to be. I set them up for the most common things I do, like one for night, one for general scenery, one for action etc.

The silliest thing I've ever done was... Out shooting one day with my 5D- mk1 and suddenly the view through my viewfinder became dark and grainy looking, it didn't matter what settings I changed that day it still wouldn't look normal, I even rang Canon support and spoke to a tech about the problem to which they responded I'd have to send it some 2,000km to Sydney for them to repair it under warranty. The next day I realized what was happening, it was the way I'd been holding the camera my little finger had been pressing the DOF button near the lens mount. DOH! Sometimes it pays to read some of the manual before operating something new lol

It's possible to import photos into Lightroom but then not see them because you have a filter applied.

My most common mistake is when I'm using my Sony NEX C3 I sometimes touch the video button without realising and I've lined up a good shot, press the shutter button and nothing, panic mode used to set in, "why won't my camera not working?", then I see the rec in the corner of the screen. Now if it doesn't take a photo that's the 1st thing I check. I recently had the use of an Olympus EM5 and was able to assign magnify to the record button so eliminated that issue with that camera.

I normally set ISO to Auto, and adjust the aperture and shutter speed. But somehow the ISO was accidently set to 100 on an overcast day, and I wondered why all my images were underexposed. I now check all settings just in case.

Yes, I have almost completely avoided that after i started to transfer images through the cloud and I have spare cards on my bad but still it happened to me once and I had just cleaned by bad so there was no spare card. I had one in my spare camera though.

I’m an architectural photographer by day and a event photographer by night. Previous night I had cropped into DX to get extra reach on my 70-200. Next morning at a very important clients call out I thought to myself “why are my shots so tight? I’m at 15mm??” Duh!!!! Shot the whole gig that way. Last shot……. It hits me. 🤦‍♂️

1. Caring about lens sharpness. 2. Having a camera you need to be careful when using. 3. Change lenses on location. 4. Lifting shadows in post on every photograph. 5. Using manual focus lenses.

Offhand, probably my most genius moment was when I offered to shoot a music video for my friend's band. I met the band at one of their practice sessions, and spent close to ten minutes attaching my camera to my gimbal for some potential B roll. Turns out I had the base plate backwards. Yeah, I looked really pro.

Common mistake I make is leaving it in aperture priority when it starts getting dark. So I take a photo and I hear the shutter and think damn, that didn't sound right, and sure enough it's something like 1/15 second and there's motion blur everywhere.
