Affinity photo is my Photoshop alternative, especially because their iPad app is super easy to use. $30 one time and it's nearly at feature parity with PS

Affinity Designer, on the other hand, is garbage, but at least they give you a free trial. When I tried it, it couldn't even import SVG properly or trace images, both of which open source software does pretty well.

I think I'm heading back to Adobe. I don't have the patience to deal with getting rid of the ads in the various Corel products. When trying to get reacclimated to them I find myself just griping in my head about the "olden days" of Corel and how much I used to love that software suite. I have no regrets though about the money I spent at Humble Bundle since the bulk went to charity.

Great video! I've been hearing a lot of people bash on the adobe subscription, but really it's a great value for what you're paying for if you consider all the things that you get with it like the Adobe fonts and access to Adobe stock. If you're a graphic designer like myself that stuff is very valuable, not to mention the gazillion other applications you get as well. It's probably not for everybody but honestly if you add up all these little bits and pieces of software that you're purchasing you're probably spending more than $600 a year for these little bundles that probably don't do everything that you needed to do or you need multiple pieces of software to do one thing. Not to mention most of these one time payment software's or free software's is not nearly as far as advanced as something like Adobe. Like you and I employees of companies need to be paid for their work and if they're good they demand a higher salaries. Those payments go to further advance the software. I love affinity products but a one time payment of $50 is the reason why it's not nearly as advanced as Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator. I can't do my daily job with cheap software, let me correct that, I can do my job but I spend probably five times the amount of time trying to do what takes me such a minimal time in a fire more advanced software application like Photoshop. Just my $0.02, again it's not for everybody.

That assumes you have actual use for every bit of it. I’ve been using the Adobe suite for… $14 years now? Full time since the CS5 days with early photoshop and premiere stuff going way way back. I still have an active sub purely for photoshop, Lightroom and AE use, but it’s only out of laziness (and plugin ecosystem for AE). As a full-time video editor, Resolve gives me everything I need on that front, and I absolutely could do everything I needed from photoshop in affinity or capture one or something if I wanted to. As someone who was fully enmeshed in the Adobe ecosystem for a long time, unless you’re hyper-dependent on one particular feature or thing, the value isn’t as compelling as it sounds

But because of changing to a cd/dvd-less system, I haven't been able to access Corel without paying another Arm & Leg for it, which I refused to do. Now because of you, it's affordable! Thank You so much!!! You ROCK!!

As I learned the hard way, even after paying nearly $3K for my Adobe CC subscription over several years, if you stop your sub, you lose all your cloud files and cannot use any of the apps after that. You'd think, for all that money, we'd be able to run the last downloaded version of each app -- but wouldn't be able to update. Nope.

I feel like most people watching this will be amateurs, and do them i'd just say pirate away (safely), no company is going to come after you for learning to edit, uploading a few videos on youtube, or learning how to 3d model or sculpt. In the chance you become good enough to earn money, just buy the software then.

I use resolve and I still think it's the best bargain software, you can't put a price on a LIFETIME LICENSE these days. I quite like FireAlpaca just for my doodles. What stops me using smaller less known software is, lack of how to videos and guides. I know that's solely a me problem because I'm a big dummy but it's a thing.

Adobe has its issues but the cost is not one of them, and neither is the subscription model. For anyone using software like this professionally $50 a month is insignificant. Especially given the fact that it is a business expense for tax purposes. This shouldn't represent more than 20-40 minutes worth of work max out of 9600 minutes of work every month. And while using non-standard software is fine if you never collaborate with other people that isn't the case for most professionals. Having files where you don't need to worry about compatibility is a huge time-saving relative to the old times when file versions were all over the place, even if people were using the same software. I remember when there were a lot of people using things like PageMaker, QuarkXpress, and InDesign all at the same time and it was a complete pain. Not to mention it added a huge barrier to changing jobs if you learned one piece of software but a job opening preferred another. Getting cheap, non-standard software is fine if you are doing it as a hobby or only work alone but that simply isn't the case for the vast majority of professionals.
@analog-dreams

It’s almost as if I opened the video saying “if you’re just starting out” But also we’re moving to a point where the “industry standard” programs keep changing or being dethroned. Being at the top too long leads to stagnation and complacency. Plus there are plenty of jobs (or just making art on your own) that just care if you get the thing done.
@db-ws9yn

@@analog-dreams Started” as a professional is different than “started” as a first time user or hobbyist and I don’t get the impression you are talking simply to hobbyists here or elsewhere. The video has nothing to do with the pitfalls of standardization so quit moving the goalposts and pretending that was part of the reasoning. Especially because while there are costs there are also benefits. I have lived through both for decades. It had nothing to do with what you are saying here. And as I said, if you don’t collaborate ever file types might not be an issue. That might be fine for a few rare people of for software that isn’t your primary tool but for the vast majority of professionals at any level, expert or beginner, that simply isn’t the case. These just feel like vital pieces of information you left out of a post with a clickbait headline of Adobe being expensive.

Anyone who loves capitalism would say crap like that. There are talented artists who are using free softwares like Blender 3D, and they are using it professionally! And thing is, they don't have to worry about paying a monthly bill, missing payments, or paying cancellation fees when using a rented art software like Adobe! Adobe, as one of those boneheaded corporate American companies, only cares about making fast profits! It really does not care about the art community as "some" artists think!

Instead of Photoshop I use Photopea which is basically the same thing in a browser, slightly different UI but other than that it's Photoshop and it's free... (That said I'd like the Photoshop UI since I got used to that in high school D: But I'd sooner pirate it than pay Adobe's ABSURD price...) My video editing software is pretty meh, I use Movie Studio Platinum 13, might switch over to something like DaVinci eventually... Also idk why anyone would use winrar over 7zip, like I like the name winrar but other than that who the fuck uses winrar? Like, maybe with this AI stuff things will change, but it's like using Bing or Internet Explorer in like 2020 as opposed to Chrome, maybe Firefox, or Microsoft Edge (which has some unique features like convenient text to speech PDF reading...) Like doesn't Winrar constantly hassle you to pay them and they have kinda a shitty UI? 7zip feels well integrated like it should probably come with your PC pre-installed tbh...

If you get caught with pirated software, the software company does NOT get the copyright. Where did you get that from? You get fined, that's all, but that may still ruin you.
@analog-dreams
@analog-dreams Жыл бұрын
From studying copyright law in college. Work created with stolen tools - which includes piracy - doesn't keep copyright on the creator using the stolen tools.
@analog-dreams
@analog-dreams Жыл бұрын
Ah right, because random people on Quora definitely beat out *actually studying US copyright law*. Also " Copyright law is really simple. It doesn’t look at the conditions under which a work is made in order to judge a work worthy of copyright protections. A work can, for instance, infringe on another work, but still have its own copyright protection. An unlicensed translation of a book, for example." Lol that just... isn't true. There's TONS of caveats involving the "conditions under which a work is made" including (but not limited to) stolen tools, work for hire, all kinds of stuff. Doing your own research is useless if you don't know how to actually do research. It's sad those skills aren't taught anymore.

At this point with A.I. is not worth paying for Adobe cloud. You are now competing with A.I. programs coming every month, plus the A.i. enthusiastics who have never used A.I. for art but are more than welcome. Pay it once is the way.
@analog-dreams
@analog-dreams Жыл бұрын
There aren’t other options that compete anywhere near as well for object removal/detection&selection/content aware actions with Photoshop. So it’s absolutely worth paying for if it’s crucial to your work, as the alternative is a 3-10x increase in time wasted

What I hate about copyright laws in the US, they are not protecting the artists or creators; but the laws are really meant for corporations to have ownership of everything. I remember the fallout of Spotify and there were some artists who wanted their music to be pulled out from that platform, but they could not do that because their big record label bosses would not allowed them to do it. Once these artists signed the contract, the music that they created belongs to those big record labels. When Prince was alive, he feared that Warner Brothers or Time Warner wanted ownership of his music that he created. To make story short, Prince passed away and Time Warners own his music now. Look at Meta and Microsoft, they were sued for stealing software features from other developers, but sadly the US Goverment sided with Meta and Microsoft. Even I feel Adobe is guilty for stealing features too. But all in all, we are living in under the dictatorship of US capitalism. Capitalists make the laws that favor them, they run our politicians, they can buy other companies to kill competition and limit customers' choices, they can steal artworks from social media, rip off customers, etc. They can get away whatever they do without being held accountable.
@analog-dreams
@analog-dreams Жыл бұрын
You're conflating artists signing bad deals with greedy record labels and copyright when those are two very different things. Copyright at its core IS designed to protect artists/creators. It's gotten manipulated a fair bit by the likes of Disney to extend protections far beyond what it should - but it doesn't protect individual creators any less. Copyright can't protect you from signing bad legal agreements. Copyright also isn't what's allowing record labels to do these things, that's the contracts the artists signed into. Still bad/greedy capitalism, yes, but very different things
@Artist1974CH
@Artist1974CH Жыл бұрын
@@analog-dreams Sure the copyright is designed to protects artists/creators . At the same time, wealthy capitalists are mostly benefitting off of it more than the artist/creators. I am saying this from I've observed. Another thing, this artist name Silver Stephen once pointed out how big companies were stealing artworks from artists, and that was something that was never been addressed before. It is funny how the elites tell the public to follow the laws when the elites can't follow their own laws that they wrote. I hope you understand that I am not trying to start problems on your channel or anything. I am an artist myself, and your video got my attention! I agree with you about the expensive art softwares. Why paying so much for rented Adobe softwares when people can pay affordable one- time purchase programs or download open source art programs that are just as good and to keep? Even people don't have to worry about monthly payments and cancellation fees. I am no fan of subscription model. Even I don't agree with some people who think free software is only good for non-professional use. They have never discovered artists who use Blender 3D or Krita to do artworks for a living. They don't even know that Blender 3D was used for some of the parts of Spiderman 2.
