Common sense is to use a known source. Lile godaddy for this. Then transfer it out after you aquire. Simple.

@@DeepPressOn no it’s not. If I own a domain and want to sell it for 100k, it will be 100k, plus fees on every platform, porkbun can only get you money off on domains that now own owns. And if you use his 1 dollar off coupon that is 999,999 plus fees. Both his and my comments and jokes (I think his is).

A former student of mine currently holds about 100 domains. I know of one he bought for $18 & eventually sold for $10k. He is a semi retired attorney & business consultant, so it is definitely a huge part of his life, but certainly possible.

Beware that an increase is coming at every registrar (for select TLDs). The Verisign registry is raising the wholesale price for .com domains on September 1st. Other TLD registries are increasing prices too.

@@jacemcpaul Porkbun hasn’t announced updated pricing yet, but every registrar’s wholesale cost is increasing by $0.58. So the price will increase at least by that for a .com.

I'm a bit late to this, but... No. Porkbun has a good reputation. I myself use Cloudflare and they're also great, they sell their domains at price. No special first-year deals, just cheap. Cloudflare also has some basic services for free, like email forwarding, even if you get your domain somewhere else. Avoid Google Domains, they just got bought by squarespace - not that you can still buy stuff off there, anyways.

This happened to me as well on godaddy. I checked availability of a domain name but didn’t buy it. When I went back in a day later to reserve it, they had taken it and wanted to sell it to me for $70. Slimeballs!
