That's why I started with fully RAW cameras (FP and BMPCC4K). Workflow for YT content was not ideal, but it made me improve my filmmaking. It forced me to learn to manually focus, it made me improve my color grading, and it made me improve my overall workflow. So now that I have my A7siii, hopefully I can capitalize on these skills and techniques. Solid message, subbed!

Right!? Finally someone said it! I laugh so hard when other youtubers and photographers/videographers etc, preach gear doesn't matter as they are literally using the best of the best. I learned real quick back in 2007 how much gear matters when I was trying to do High School Football at night under the lights. Talk about a crappy situation lol. Once I invested in myself and got the proper equipment I literally had every parent asking why their photos didn't look like mine. Kudos on the video and you earned a sub!

You might wonder why there are so many "professionals" trying to educate you that gear doesn't matter while they always have the latest and greatest. Don't doubt yourself, they are just being dishonest. They even pull out some cherry picked "real life comparisions" with perfect lighting and steadiness and tells you "there is no meaningful difference" between old/low end and high end cameras, which is not realistic at all. If you just shoot landscape or shoot in studio, with perfect lighting /steadiness, a 10 years old camera might serve you well. However, when the condition starts to get challenging, the difference couldn't be more significant. New technology like eye tracking auto focus, in body stabilization are game changers, let alone the much better high ISO perfermence. To be honest, if you really used them in challenging conditions, you will agree that comparing two perfectly in focus, low ISO, perfect steady shots is not fair for the new camera, the whole point of new cameras is a much wider opterating window. In more real life situations, you will be comparing a perfectly capturned moment and a blurry mess. I just switch from my 5D Mark 3 to a new mirrorless camera, it's a much better experience, I get 100% hit rate with the new camera when I photogragh people, I can ask my models to move around, be more nature and I'm confident they will be in focus. With the 5D I need to be really careful when things start to move, I need to ask my models to hold steady in low light, resulting in stiff poses. Can I get the job done with an old camera? Yes I can, the 5D is still a fantastic camera, but I can think more about the creativity side rather than technical side with a new camera and I can capturn more moments. I know good photo is all about right place right time, but you just get more right place and right time with a new camera. If you want to upgrade and you can afford it, just upgrade, it's no shame to admit your gear is holding you back, I don't know why so many people make it sound like shameful. Unlike what many people tried to convince you, bad gear don't make you a better photographer, it only makes you love photoghraphy less and less. Technology are here to serve you, why don't embrace it? If you are on a tight budget, get a good camera body, even a used one, you can get away with cheaper lenes (I can highly recomend Samyang lenes). The difference between bodys are usually more significant. Lenes are usually more of an diminishing return, you usually need to really zoom in to tell the difference.

I think gear doesn't matter if your using it as a crutch to not get started. You could spend thousands of dollars on gear but if it sits in a bag somewhere it isn't doing anyone any good. I think it was Les Brown who said "Start where you are with what you have."

One could also mention saying how equipment there (the dollar amount) is sounding like a lot more. Someone may have $8k of gear. It may have taken multiple years to accumulate that gear. I have a $2k MacBook Pro but it took me using my 2011 mac book pro that my wife and I bought together to share and use for school. Saving up a little at a time for 8 years to get the newer one. I saved for another item for a few years to finally go from fun phone photos to be able to get a Sony A7III for family fun and hobby stuff. Might film some stuff for a family member's wedding. His example at 6:59 about people making cool content with 12mp censors 1080p going to the Sony a7c to enhance projects kinda hit home. When I was in college the first time I took a photography class and the gear they had, was the early canon digital point and shoot cameras, that I took some cool photos with. I used a film Nikon camera I got at a thrift store. My phone now takes cooler shots than that and my newer camera is even better than that.

I started with a Nikon D3500 and am now using a Sony A7III. Gear Does matter. I have shot a few events and I can say that the Sony enabled me to do it. From changing settings on the fly to image quality, low light performance. So yes in the end, gear does matter. But it doesn't make you a better photographer. It just makes photography easier. *Edit: I used the D3500 for over a year, starting from zero, taking about 30,000 images over the same period of time.

I agree and dis-agree in this order 1) The mort important part is the person using the gear: a) a bad photographer will still shoot bad photos or videos even if he has the best and most expensive gear (camera, lenses, etc), and b) a great photographer will still take great photos and video even using his phone or a 5mp camera with a kit lens 2) After the photographer the 2nd most import part is knowing how to use the lighting (natural or artificial) 3) Then its the equipment (camera and lens)

Still here! But this is so true, start cheap and eventually go up in price once you once have the skills to justify it. Going into a little more detail another important factor is editing, for sure start off with JPEG, but eventually try to learn how to edit raw files and then that will push your cheaper camera even further having lots of flexibility to bring average photos back to life. My current style of photography is bird photography, I met a guy when first started (was using $300 old camera) and he had a 10 year old camera setup up, but was worth $10,000aud originally only 12MP the photos he showed me were amazing. He recommended me the Nikon P1000 bridge camera to start with, so I did and it was cheap. Using the same camera for the last 6 months, they started off looking unprofessional, now ive learnt to edit raw files, choose right lighting direction, the angle of view shot is taken at and taking background into account. Also the right settings. Now I feel like this camera will do me for a long time, and ill eventually move to Sony full frame with a set of skills :)

Greetings Terry, Your statement is in many ways correct, but not entirely. In the world of photography I would tend to agree. However in the world of film, it’s the story that matters. Because without the story, you could have all the equipment in the world and none of it would matter. I think this was important to point out because in today’s world we have a lot of overlap between aspiring photographers/videographers, and videographers who specialize in cinematic capture and Indy films. So ultimately, it comes down to knowing who you are or what your trying to achieve in the scheme of things.

Terry, glad I found your channel and I like your analogies. As for this arguement, I can somewhat see both sides to a degree. I got my start many mango seasons ago as the photographer for the HS yearbook and used a 120mm film Rollie TLR owned by the school. After that I only had range finder film as digital didn't exist. Also as a young pup who was/is not a professional photographer, I could not afford an SLR. Then one day my in-laws got me a NikonFG with 50mm kit lens. I loved that camera and still being poor, could not afford to shoot tons of film so one roll 24exp would sometimes last me many months. Due to the cost of film, developing and printing (factors young people today don't have to worry about) I had to force myself to make sure every shot counted so I learned all the aspects, ISO/ASA, SS, Aperature, focal length etc and of course sometimes got it wrong but learned from my mistakes. Then my daughter entered travel soccer so I scraped together my pennies and got a Quantaray 70-300mm lens which was cheap but awesome just the same. That was my entire photo kit until say the last 5 years or so. Got my first DSLR D3300 and from there there was no stopping. I went into a "GAS" phase stopping at every pawn shop I passed by picking up DSLR cameras and lenses like there was no tomorrow. When I got an A6000, I discovered that vintage manual lenses were freaking awesome so then I collected adapters, more lenses and cameras. Now that I can pretty much, like you, afford anything, even a Hasselblad if I wanted, but I don't. I do have a D750, several Sony mirrorless APS-C and Lumix M43s. I have always enjoyed cameras and taking interesting pictures, pets, landscape, family, sunsets, macro, etc. Still not, nor will ever be, a professional, I just like it and digital has make it to where nearly anyone can afford a good quality camera at a reasonable price. I can afford but can't justify getting a Sony FF A series camera though I may break down and get a Z5 sometime. For now I am just having fun and trying to get the most out of what I already have. Anyways, I enjoy your videos and I hope that you are inspiring more young people to get into this art form either for hobby or professional reasons. Make sure to always "Rock the Shot!" I made that up but feel free to use it.

For a certain quality and flexibility is good gear absolutely necessary. Not to forget: at the end of the day it’s the photographer who takes the shot. btw: imo it makes sense to buy good stuff if someone collected further experience and likes to enhance that more & more. If someone has no idea about the shutter-iso-aperture-game (& more) he doesn’t need a super expensive camera, the best lenses or other gear.

You explain to the chef how great the food is, that you've never tasted anything so great and you ask the chef "What kind of pots and pans do you use? Who makes them?" Knowledge is power When I started this venture a few years ago 21 to be exact I shot wedding with a canon A-1 then bumped up to an RZ67. Went digital in 2001 or so and have not looked back. Lear to use what you have and not envy what the other guy has. When I got into photography I joined PPA and got a mentor. Learned the ropes from the ground up. I will never be an influencer but I do 80-90 high school seniors, my team and I shoot about 45-50k in sport images. We use 5D MK III’s at some point I will shift to the R5 but we stay super busy. first, I would argue you shouldn't mindlessly consume even if you have the financial means to, but that's a discussion for another time. but I think you're right man. first, what makes a good photo or a good film is the person, not necessarily the gear. soderbergh makes solid hollywood films with iphones. what you're paying for with good gear seems to be better engineering (design, build quality, etc) and quality-of-life stuff. I shoot (stills, very little video) on a used nikon d3500 and a couple refurbished dx lenses I picked up at the start of quarantine. I've fallen in love with photography, and in my time shooting I have learned I need something that with a weather sealed body lmao I want to get a full frame camera just because I don't feel like the crop sensor feels totally natural? I don't know, honestly it's fine but I need a new camera and may as well go full frame because there are seemingly no downsides. I'm trying to decide now if I want to spend 3k+ on a mirrorless camera and a decent lens or two, or if I should just get a d750 and maybe one fast lens all for under $2k. I'm not loyal to any brand because I have next to no money invested in a lens collection. anyway that's what's going on in my photography life. No one needs to own the best of everything especially when your audience can't tell the difference in the end.

So many people want to run before they can walk. So many people see what other people have and want what they got. Back in the day I was editing custom car show videos using only 2 VCRs and that’s it! A friend of mine said if you could do this with 2 vcrs I know you are gonna kill it when you get some real editing equipment. Folks need to learn how to use what’s available to them to learn the basics. I’ve never shot with a RED camera or any high end Arricam etc but I bet because I know the basics and the fundamentals of how to use a camera, I would be just fine. I got a friend right now that every time I either get some new gear or make mention of some gear, all the sudden he wants the same thing! Those types of people don’t make any sense. Half the people don’t even fully know how to operate the gear they have anyway. So it’s stupid for them to go out and buy all this expensive stuff and don’t even have a clue what to do with it. Those people are probably shooting in P mode and not manual mode!

Yes! #fam Like most things in life, the truth is nuanced and you provided good advice. I also see the tendancy for people to care too much about the "fancy" gear like camera bodies and lenses, while they don't care for the "boring" gear like tripods, clamps and backpacks. It's like some people only train the "mirror" muscles for show, but forget to train the legs.

Hold on, did you just justify both sides? In my personal, gear doesnt matter, Yes, better gear improves work flow, but better gear doesn't included technique or talent. Today's budget cameras are way better that high end cameras 10 years ago, but nobody is telling better stories with better gear. Technology changes, people don't.

Great video, and you make perfect sense. But I think there is another reason to get cheaper gear when you’re starting out. Maybe you learn more about how to get sharpness in an image if you have a camera with only 12 megapixels. Or maybe you understand more about composition if you’re forced to see everything through a 50mm lens. In the end, maybe dealing with the limitations of cheaper gear forces you develop those skills that makes you a better photographer in the long run.

First off AMAZING VIDEO!!! 🔥❤️ Second, gear really matters, like ive been on my phone taking pictures for three years till now and i try my best to get good pictures. Like i learned the simple stuff, but if you give me a camera now all of the things ive learned is out the window lmao bc idk the settings or anything so yeah gear fckin matters. I need something that will get better pictures in different conditions like i feel most of the time im limited to what i can do, if you shoot on a phone you would know lmao. But yeah i agree that learning the basics first and to learn to be creative is great, but I believe just straight up saying gear doesn’t matter is just wrong since there is like a billion types of photography and videography that require different gear!!

Nope, you didn’t miss anything important. Gear matters, especially to someone with the skill to utilize it well. I would never recommend someone on a fixed budget to try to buy the best gear when starting out. It is so common for people to buy the top gear that ends up collecting dust on the shelf because they lost interest, for whatever reason. Better to start with decent affordable gear and develop your skill and prove your interest over time. Then the upgrades will make sense. It is also better to NOT just buy a bunch of gear because someone says you need this or that, while you have no idea what kind of photography you really enjoy. So many people get catch up in the gear and lose complete sight on the photograph. Then people fixate on stuff like sharpness thinking that somehow that is what photography is about. Frankly, for most, it is more about buying shit than anything else. Having said that, if you got the money, then buy what you want, but do so with a full understanding that you are just spending money because you can. Don’t lie to yourself thinking that your pricey gear is going to make you a good photographer when you have to ask other people what settings they used for a shot. Asking others for settings is a dead giveaway for being a noobie, not that there is anything wrong with being a noobie (everyone is a noobie at some point in their journey). If you develop your skill, you don’t spend time even thinking about settings and you learn to figure them out yourself because you have spent a lot of time and effort practicing the art of image making. Skill and talent are the result of time and effort, not buying gear.

Better gear makes it easier to get the job done. When you have skill. But sometimes better gear will show you aren’t as good as you think if you go from a 90D to a 5D mk4 with a bag full of 1.2 lenses .Your increased DOF and variable aperture lens from the 90D had a lot more in focus by the design of the camera Now the 5D4 bigger sensor has shallower DOF and at 1.2 the DOF is super thin and you will find you are not as good as you thought.

Creating my eye mattered more. When I got experienced and started to make it a career and my profits reflected it, then I matured in my gear. So at a point gear doesn’t matter till it’s necessary for the enhancement of your career.

Had to drop a sub. For me I always bought the best of the mid line of cameras. Once my skill set became limited by the gear I jump to the next level. I went to a7iii from a6300. Kept one of them for backup. I was a canon shooter 60d, 70d, 80d. Picked up a6000 and went yeah this is nice. Then a6300. Kept those for about 3 years. Made the mistake of not buying full frame lenses. Lol sold all that and went full frame and think I’ll be here for a while. 40k iso and the picture is still useable. Flash quality is now not even a problem. It’s just fill. Anyway I talk to much but I agree with all you said.

Peace and BACON grease. Good video to the point. I've been shooting for over 30 years as an hobby. My advice has always been set a budget and some goals. Go buy the best you can afford to support the pursuit of your goals and then work on your skills until your gear doesn't serve you in pursuit of your goals. PS gear matters 100%. Buy a $300 camera throw it in auto and compare that to a $3000 camera in auto. The technology can make up for some if the skills you might not yet have. As you get better skills gear will matter less because you can use those skills to pull more out of gear.

You made the right choice bro, it's everything you need and more. You don't need dual card slot and lots of buttons to take good photos. I know many people complain about the ergonomics of a7c, but speaking as someone used to carry a big, heavy DSLR, being light weight is the best ergonomical featrue you can have.
