Great run down as always Darren, always appreciate your enthusiastic take on movies. I can usually tell, without fail (although I've been pleasantly surprised before), which movies I'm interested in by your brief synopsis. You don't give spoilers, but describe feel, cinematography, pacing... Exactly what I'm looking for. With sooooo much content these days, what you do is absolutely necessary! We are privileged to have someone like you and this channel, that can cut thru the noise and provide solid watch lists. Don't ever stop!

When it comes to dark, gripping and unique movies, you're the one to go to, Darren. I've put half of them on my watchlist and I didn't need to see the trailers. Just a glimpse of the flicks' setting and the way you talk about them are enough to have me sold! Your recommendations are hitting more accurately than any algorithm could ever do. Thanks Darren!

Another great video but more importantly, much needed as we all spend way too much time going through the listings on streaming services, so thank you for the service you provide! Also, I'm glad you rated Only Lovers Left Alive so highly, I like most of the films by Jim Jarmusch but I really liked Only Lovers.... and as you said, it may be his most accessible.

I'll just write one thing for this particular video, Only Lovers Left Alive being virtually ignored years back still irks me. I mean I remember seeing that that movie the week it opened locally here in Brooklyn and within two weeks it was out of that mom and pop somewhat indie movie house. Its a slow burn, but so much fun if you want to see a different type of Vampire film because unlike something like Twilight, Interview With A Vampire that kind of is filled with cliches you get a different perspective on what it really would be like to live forever. The characters reminisce about fratenizing with historical figures and celebs, spending hundreds of years doing the same hobbies, plus they have problems that all of us have but for centuries. Like trying to avoid annoying people. For example Mia Wisaowski i think played the sister of Tilda Swinton memorably and Hiddelston's character can't stand her. The vamps also face 21st century problems that make it harder to be a Vampire in the modern era. For example Hiddelston needs to almost daily get a human to steal fresh blood for him from a bank because good blood and victims are harder to come by then ever. They are forced to suck blood pops in order to keep feeding. One character's human boyfriend becomes dinner because he's right there. There s actually a good love story between Stinton and Hiddelston's characters that has lasted for centuries so it's sort of a horror/black romantic comedy with dramatic elements. The performances are very good, the characters are likeable and memorable and it's probably one of Jim Jarmusch's best movies. Not to alienating for commercial audiences but still appealing to the indie film crowd.

Centurion is based on a true story. The Roman arrogance not understanding that even though the Goths often warred with each other, they still saw themselves as blood kin. There's much written on the Goth tracker that deliberately lead the Romans into the scariest and densest part of the woods for ambush, and the psychological torment the Goths used against them. They could've taken them out immediately, but spent days making noises in the night to crush their spirits before actually defeating them. If I can remember some of the places I've read about this, I'll come back and update the post
@thefancystache3793
@thefancystache3793 2 жыл бұрын
Okay, it's real name is the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest and the Germanic tracker is Arminius. There's a wiki article on it but it doesn't do justice to the amount of fear the Goths were able to instill. The Romans were so scared they tried to flee in the night, only to be ambushed in a swamp. They lost entire legions, 20k soldiers dead. No survivors. It changed the trajectory of world history as it is the event that caused Rome to give up it's ambition of conquering Germania forever. It's a shame that Germanic people's only kept historical record by oral bards. It would be so fascinating to hear their accounts, but if the Roman's rave about how thoroughly defeated they were, one can only imagine how bad it truly was. I know, wrong channel. I'll shut up now
@thefancystache3793
@thefancystache3793 2 жыл бұрын
Okay, last comment because I went down a rabbit hole researching this. It looks like the movie combined the mysterious vanishing of the 9th legion in Caledonia with the plot of Arminius leading legions into ambush.
@NefariousKoel
@NefariousKoel 2 жыл бұрын
Was gonna say.. I thought the movie took place in modern Scotland (Caledonia, against native "Pict" tribes as the Romans called them). There was, historically, a legion which marched up into the area but was brutalized by hit & run attacks through much of the journey. The few remaining of the legion ultimately retreated back to their own territory after being defeated. There aren't many historical records remaining about the expedition from what I've gathered, and historians don't know where the last battle was fought.

Thank you for this list, Darren, I will be watching a couple of these for sure. One thing I wanted to mention, as I didn't see anyone mention this in the comment section, is that the time stamps (which are appreciated) are off for some of these movies. There are multiple movie titles in single time stamps, so you can't really use the time stamps to look through the movies.

GOON!!! Even if you don't care about hockey or sports, in general, it's a wonderful story about an underdog finding his calling, contains plenty of laughs, and has a ton a TON of heart. Dont let the hockey stop you from watching this because it's way more than just a sports film. EDIT: also, Sean William Scotts and Liev Schreiber's characters don't hate each other. There's a mutual respect but know the roles that they play for their teams means they will inevitably clash. And neither will give any quarter nor would they want each other to. It's the quintessential 'unstoppable force meets an immovable object' scenario and it's filmed absolutely brilliantly.

The actress playing Debra Logan made me believe everything, and as a huge horror fan, that is not easy to do. I saw the lost, scared woman in the early stages of dementia, that look of fear and of masking that anything might be wrong. That alone was very well done and makes you sympathize with her. And then I saw the terrifying woman . . . Madness? Dementia? Worse? watch it. I have, at least 3 times because you pick up more each time. Any good movie demands 2 viewings. The better the movie, the more though miss out on by viewing it only once.

Another Canadian film in the low budget hockey category was "Hoser". I found this in the dollar store and was fooled by the DVD cover. It showed a goofy, beat up hockey player and I thought it was a comedy farce, but it was much more serious at times with dark humor throughout. There wasn't any hockey action as the story centered around an edgy Canadian sports talk show host. The ending wasn't exactly epic, but I still watch this one over and over.

St Vincent with Bill Murray... a wonderful film.. drama.. underrated.. marvelous performances... his usual touch of dark comedy, with a much more dramatic undertone as it progresses, you get immersed in his character, as well as the young kid who see's him as a father figure he never had.. just an outstanding movie i never hear or see anything about.

I've seen The Taking of Deborah Logan probably over a year or so ago and loved it. I would love to see you recommend more paranormal horror movies if you've seen any of them.

I wanted to suggest the movie First Love. It's a Japanese yakuza/what did I get into to/noir feeling movie, that's just over the top with some great action and world building. And it's by Takashi Miike, the director of Blade of the Immortal and Ichi the Killer.

Baytown Outlaws is vey underrated and I feel like you're not giving it enough credit! I feel like it's the little cousin of Boondock Saints!

Centurion is one of my all time favorites 👍 I really liked Only Lovers Left Alive because it was so different. I plan on watching Goldstone & Thunderbolt and Lightfoot. I know I've seen The Insider but it's been so long it's time to watch it again.

I don't think you'll be disappointed in those two flicks. There's a film called Mystery Road that has been associated with Goldstone and it is definitely worth a look. I saw it free on YT. Picked up Goldstone in the dollar bin! And if you like Aussie flicks, The Square is intense.

Goldstone is a sequel to the film Mystery Road which is equally as good.
