The Vespa GTS Super Sport took the day off so I'm on my Triumph Bonneville T120 today talking about why I DON'T have a death wish, so back off NANCY! I get sick of people telling me to be careful, and then they go sliding down a mountain standing on planks like that's the safest sport in the world.
STAAAAAAPPP!!!!!! My Vespa is NOT A DEATH MACHINE!
Filmed on a my2017 TRIUMPH BONNEVILLE T120 BLACK.

Excellent video sir, I agree with you completely. I knew a person who rode his motorcycle for over 20 years without any accident, but he died after slipping in his home and hitting his head during the pandemic. So no one would have thought he would die this way, and no one tells to be careful sitting at home.

I got told by some friends that a relative of one of their friends died on a bike. And he had "decades of experience", which apparently didn't do much to prevent him from overcooking a corner (in poor surface condition, gravel/mud/both), panic braking and colliding with a tree or something. Don't get me wrong, sucks that it happened and that their friend lost a relative, but acting like I'm not acutely aware of the risks every time I get on the bike is downright insulting. So is assuming that my judgement is somehow compromised because I choose to accept saod risks. Then they point out "oh, but it's cars you need to watch out for!"... Ya don't say! Before I got my bike, I'd been driving for 10 years. In that time, I've never once had close call that I could not have prevented. Yes, most of them were the other road user's "fault", but that's not the point. I saw the potential hazard way ahead of time and chose to put myself in a position of elevated risk, against my own better judgement. I did that because "everyone else is doing it". I was wrong to accept other people's poor judgement in every single one of those cases, and have learnt to trust my own instead. Works exactly the same on the bike. If I don't give people the chance to hit me, then they can't, can they... Yes, that means being extra-vigilant and planning at least the next 10 seconds to make sure there are never any surprises. At this point it's second nature, I barely even have to think about it. So yeh, they can safely assume I'm "being careful".

I guess I've become impervious to comments and concerns from non-riders about the risk I take as a rider. In part because I have spent time practicing both my riding skills and road strategies. And in part because I have closely looked at what rider behaviors account for much of the risk. All things I don't do -- drink and ride, speed, ride beyond my skills, etc. I do have to agree with you on the notion that there are happiness vampires out there. More than you would think. A lot of sad and miserable people in the world. Lastly, I think human beings are generally inept at understanding or evaluating risk. I know people who won't swim in the ocean for fear of a shark attack yet happily get in their car to drive to work, ski, or just in the shower every day. Or won't fly on an airplane for fear of a crash yet commute daily in a car. So just keep riding. And be careful!!!
@bugscooters

I used to be one of those folks who wouldn't fly. I had a rough landing in Boston my senior year of college, and didn't fly again until I was in my 30s. It's too bad, really, because I missed out on a TON of great opportunities to travel. Ladybug (lol) was flying all over the world for work, and I could have tagged along to so many great places. But I was too afraid. I finally educated myself about the risks of flying, and aeronautics in general, and that fixed me up.

I tell ppl to "enjoy your ride" when they are leaving on a bike. I ignore the "be careful" comments (mostly). "Oh geez, thank you for that, as I wasn't even thinking about riding carefully or safe while I put my helmet and gloves on (already wearing other protective stuff)". It's like the new saying since COVID "be safe". Stupid. My Vespa turn signal is likely on more than off, but I'm thankful for my BMWs self cancelling feature.

Agreed, but maybe some really care for you and don't want to lose you! :) I'm going back to riding age 70 but I really will be more careful this time around. Incredible how fearless you are as a teenager - I mean nothing can possibly go wrong, right! My own experience leaves me with only one dread - that of the very common story of people that ride carefully for many years only to have someone in a car pull out in front of them. I know I won't fully enjoy riding unless this time I can make myself super visible, as well as learning to swerve properly and practicing other skills. I don't believe hi vis and headlights really do enough although I don't have evidence to back that up, only anecdotal. What I do believe you will find actual data for is the rapid decrease in accidents among bicycle riders who wear flashing lights. We are just wired to see changes of any kind, not constant images. I'm looking at doing the same on my motorcycle, but not enough to annoy motorists, and I like the look of some pulsing headlight products I've seen. I see Moto Jitsu (great KZfaq channnel I reckon) has a BMW with some pretty cool pulsing lights. Looking back on my own motorcycle crashes in my youth I remember well another common cause of grief - when you do have to slam on you need to be pretty well trained to not lock up the front wheel in panic and have the bike go under you. I'm going to get ABS now that is is available on today's bikes.
@bugscooters
@bugscooters 3 ай бұрын
I remember years ago seeing those pulsing headlights all over the place. I can't remember the last time I saw one though. Seems like a good idea to me. I am very pro-ABS and have it on both my scooter and motorcycle. Still, like you say, training is key. I practice panic-stopping a lot. It almost never triggers the ABS. I use ABS as my benchmark. If it activates, then I've pushed too hard. Enjoy!

What I would like to say when I get "Be careful" or otherwise told how unsafe motorcycling/scootering/cycling is: "I am careful. What you can do is be an attentive driver. YES 1000% YES. One of my frequent 'be carefulers' is a habitual phone-in-the-car type. I'd bet 80% of his/her driving (in a congested major city) is done while on speakerphone in the car. Drives me bananas.

I'm retired, a couple of years. The last 8 years at work I'd have to ride 500 miles to see my gal because she had transferred. I'd start work at 2 am, work until 11am, then ride. Kinda crazy but that's what I had to do. I'd do that 1000 mile loop every two weeks or so, year round here in coastal California. My boss would tell me to be careful and I'd tell her that I'll ride with confidence. If I was ever not feeling confident, I wouldn't ride. Weather, or me feeling under the weather... Confidence by my terms means that I know my capabilities (and the bike's) and that I'll ride within those capabilities, while not trusting any other vehicle on the road. That was the best that we could all hope for. She never liked that answer.

@@bugscooters You’re right, it comes with age and experience. I think it also had a bit of luck and respect for what can happen. When I was young it used to make me a little bit angry when someone would say motorcycles are “inherently dangerous.” I finally figured out what that means to me, it isn’t just because they can fall over on their own, or the power to weight ratio, it’s because car drivers don’t respect motorcycles or other cars enough to see them. Even Tesla’s radar has been prone to not recognize stopped motorcycles resulting in rear-ending some bikes. Our Spidey-Senses have to be on the highest sensitivity.

I think people say, "be careful" to motorcycle riders because about half of motorcycle wrecks are single-vehicle wrecks. That's unique among all vehicles where most wrecks are collisions. In addition, about 90% of motorcycle collisions occur to the front of the motorcycle. In both situations, motorcyclists are doing a controlled ride into . In comparison to driving, motorcycling is about 32 times more lethal. That's a lot. But in comparison to, apparently, SCUBA diving inside of caves, motorcycling is about 20 times less lethal. Horseback riding? Biking is half as lethal. Skiing, however, is about 100 hundred times safer than motorcycling. We're talking about lethality here which is the only statistics that matters. Bumps, bruises, and broken bones all heal.
