I don’t want to be “That Person”….but…until clamshells hit the travel scene - a deep suitcase with a one-sided zip opening was the standard for a lot of luggage. Seems like simple physics that you can cram more stuff into one deep bin than two shallow bins….the hard-siders can take a bit more punishment on the road, but only if they are very well made…$$$$ !! I also love resale shop luggage…..IF it’s totally functional, the correct size for my trip and Does Not Stink!! I delude myself into thinking that old, beat-up luggage isn’t that enticing to a thief…but that’s just my fantasy - I am aware!!💕 Happy & safe travels to all!!!

Joining the "That person" club too :) I always figured you either get clamshell vs top open (my preference is top open for how we access our luggage in hotels). Hearing the clamshell being called "traditional" made me feel really old at my 43 years on this Earth....lol. Although I don't usually see a hardshell with a top open, so in that respect, that is interesting and best of both worlds.

Regarding unusual baggage colors: A friend of mine has bright purple luggage…she has had her underwear (just her underwear!) gone missing somewhere between her point of origin and destination twice now! I have had good luck with teal, it contrasts with all the black bags, but apparently doesn’t scream “steal my underwear”! 😂😊😂

At 8.5 pounds, it's pretty heavy if you want to keep total weight to about 17 pounds, about the weight some foreign airlines require for carry on. Otherwise, it will get checked...and it's even a bit to large for a lot of European airlines.

I always hated the clamshell design when it became the norm, hence why I still like my soft shell top opening ones. Just more compact and can lean the top lid against a wall, instead of having to spread out the clam shell on the ground. Thanks for sharing

I won’t buy a hard shell suitcase because they are too heavy and I don’t like spinners because they waste space and don’t handle cobblestones well. I do like the basic design, and as other people have pointed out, almost all luggage used to work like this.

I’ve been eyeing these for a while. It makes so much more sense. Usually your only choice for hard sides is a clamshell. And there are so many reasons I don’t like them. With this is much easier to access on the go if needed. Easier in a small hotel room, fits on hotel luggage stands, it’s easier to pack bulky items aka souvenirs 😂. I have not run into weight issues yet so I agree the weight might eventually be an issue. I keep hoping other companies start making these and they will get lighter.

Love your reviews I saw this in the Amazon store and loved the drink holder of all things. The bag reminds me of my beloved Motherlode with the way it opens. The Motherlode offers a bit more space in the top which is where I store sports equipment, water shoes, puffy jacket, umbrella, etc. stuff I rarely have to have and I love that. I jump between it and my Away bag but always bring my wheeled Jansport backpack as I often check the other bag on the way back and my carry-on must have wheels! XO, Kelly

I just transitioned from a regular Travelpro deep bin carry-on to a Tumi clamshell hybrid and I love it. Most of my trips involve multiple locations and I like having the two separate compartments so I can have one compartment for, say, casual wear and one for more dressy clothes. Or one for cold weather and one for warmer weather. If you're going someplace where you'll stay and not to anywhere, a deep bin bag is great because you can fit a lot.

I have 3 different hardside top open. It's hard to find in the US. Delsey had it once, but it's been discontinued. I fell down the stairs and landed on my delsey and bent the handle... can't find another. In Asia they have different brands for around $60. I bought a 22" and a 20". They have a double zipper, makes it harder to break into. Love it because two can fit on the luggage shelf. Clam shells take twice as much space when open.

The challenge I have with this design compared to a clamshell is whether you can pack pressed pants and carefully folded suit jackets so they don’t wrinkle too much. In a clamshell, I put these items on the flat/front side. The bottom of this bag has the handle tracks, so no flat surface. I guess you could try putting them on top, but then you can’t have easy access items like toiletries or laptop on top.

The downside I see with this suitcase you featured is that it weighs over 8 pounds. That's kind of a deal breaker for me.

For my next Mexico trip I plan to do a packing video yes! But no I didn't do laundry - for hot weather climate, for me - I can fit a lot because it's shorts, tanks, light dresses that can pack down. I have a recent video about how to pack for different seasons for a 10 day trip here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n7J9iMJ5u7C8nIE.htmlsi=R4NHXpzgFXUtneRq

how do the wheels roll compared to the Monos? I am always looking for this type of bag, but worry that the wheels will not hold up
@alysmalls
@alysmalls 4 күн бұрын
Much smoother than my Monos bag. This one feels a little beefier and more sturdy as it transitions from smooth floors to carpet, for example

lol well I didn't film what I packaged for Mexico and people always complain that I only show easy, hot climate clothing - so I wanted to show that multiple pants and sweaters can fit!

This bag is too heavy while empty, there are other better lighter bags I still prefer clam shell

Would be great - but for me no choice. Doesn't fit in size of Air France - allowance there in inches 21,7 x 13,8 x 9,9 - difference to 14 inches is not much, but European airlines are meanwhile very strict with measures and weight on international as well on domestic flights.

not entirely...I have a soft-sided luggage clamshell that I demonstrated in the video lol 😀

I just bought a soft-sided carryon and only had a couple to choose from that weren't clamshell. Worse, I insisted on a two wheel design, so that narrowed it further. But I found one!

Nice video! Do you know how tall/long the raised handle is? I'm 6'5" and long handles are a real plus for us tall people! Seems like only Travelpro states the height/length of the handles.

I will have to go measure, but there are a few shots in the video of my husband rolling the bag and he is 6'9 and it seems to be fine lol!

@@alysmalls Thanks! I forgot that you two have a greater height difference than even my wife and I with me being 6'5" and her at 5'4"! The issue is usually when pulling it on just two wheels for tall people our hells will hit the bag.

How does it help better than a clamshell opening type suitcase? For a same size, there will be no advantage of any excess volume in this bag. In effect, you are are actually cramming things inside here,which is incorrect.

How stable is the handle? In so many rolling bags, the handle wobbles, making it much more difficult to control the bag.
@alysmalls
@alysmalls 3 күн бұрын
Very stable, it's pretty beefy. It's much more stable than my monos bag and my other level 8 bags.

I fly back and forth to the EU on Icelandic Air so this would not work for me. Nice bag though. I prefer lighter weight backpacks, since I have a lot of tech that goes with me. Plus there are absolute weight limits when you travel to and from the EU, and 3.8 Kg is good chunk of the 9 to 10 Kg one is allowed.
@alysmalls

If you haven't seen it, I recommend watching my recent video about how to pack and fly with a backpack if you have weight restrictions: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jL-apbOCt5iok4E.htmlsi=jRtu44YIV86rAY24

@@alysmalls You do not understand, and I was not clear. My husband and I live in the EU, and I travel back home to my mother and the rest of my family for extended periods. I take less to the US, because clothing fits there, petite sizing. Then more on the way back to the EU because of said clothing. Plus some hobby stuff. Yes there are size restrictions, but being led to a video by a man who is going to some tropical vacation spot is NOT helpful.

After reviewing this Mixi bag do you prefer the Mixi or the Level 8 for a carry-on bag?
@alysmalls
@alysmalls 4 күн бұрын
I prefer the Mixi bag for overall. Level8 does have the laptop compartment if you need that though. As far as wheel smoothness and quality I would say it goes in the following order: Level8 bags, Mixi is a very close second, then Monos
