After having experiencing this issue myself and seeing other artist going through the same thing, I decided to make a video where I show how to clean your water-colour palette to stop water from beading. It work well on both tin or metal and plastic palettes.

Thanks for the tip. Worked well on my metal palette but not on my plastic palettes. I found that light sandpaper on the plastic palettes was the only thing that worked for me.

Exactly this same thing i found today! tooth paste "solution" was good for a moment to prevent beading in my plastic palette, but after some use and water it seems that stopped working somehow. My theory is that tooth paste particles are added to the plastic surface, helping with the beading. But they end up removed and that is the end of the solution. Today i was searching for some cleaning product in my house and i found one that said "contains micro particles"....i mean just the same style of product you are using here also to clean bathrooms and what not. Is working great so far and from what i see, the surface changed structurally for ever. Time will tell. Yours still working fine? And of course, thanks for this video.

This is an excellent discovery! However, I worry that the cleaner’s chemicals may affect the paint somehow? Perhaps lightfastness?

*After reading the comments below, deductive reasoning tells me that it is the Vinn residue that is helping the non-beading. But once that wears off..*

I will have to give this a try, I have found many things work temporarily, starchy things like prit-stick rubbed on with a damp cloth, bar of soap and my age old favourite "a bit of spit" rubbed on with a finger. These all work because they contain either enzymes or other wetting agent. The problem I find is as soon as you wipe out the palette with damp tissue, you're back to square one with the beading. You can reduce this by just leaving the paint on and clearing up the odd spot with the swipe of a wet brush if you really need a clean bit. I will give the VIM a go and see if it provides a longer solution., thank you for this tip.

Wow that is amazing!!!! For the metal palettes the only thing I found that worked was spray paint with enamel. MY GOODNESS this is brilliant, thank you so much for sharing this great tip. I will be going to Dollarama to pick up some Vim. So nice to find a Toronto based artist on KZfaq, just signed up for your newsletter :)

So cool, thanks so much, Christine! I noticed that sometimes you have to do this twice on a metal palette, but it DOES HELP to keep if from beading. Thanks again for watching!

What is waterproof, non-abrasive, drys in thin layers, and white? Bombay India Ink. If you apply it in layers, it'll keep the original palette white, and you can remove the ink with rubbing alcohol. It's also an excellent supply for highlights and blanching layers. I don't know how alcohol might react with plastic, but it won't harm the metal.

You gave me an idea to try baking soda and a slight amount of water and rub it in then wipe off with a wet clean towel. The soda is slightly abrasive.

I just paint a few pictures....the beading eventually stops itself and vanishes and is forgotten like a headache...don't use scouring pads ect as it will put years of wear on the surface of you palette and make it easier to stain.

Thanks for your video! It works but if I wash the palette with water, it seems the anti beading layer by the cleaner disappears....

It didn't work for me but maybe it's because I used weimans cook top. It had micro beads in it which scratched my tin and it still didn't work lol. I also washed it under running water after 5 mins.

I see it causes staining because of the tiny scratches now in the plastic.

Hi, hmr128, I know it is probably not sold in the US, but I can't get the list of ingredients from the bottle, since it is not an edible product, they are not obligated to list the ingredients. i can only say that it a cream cleanser and is supposed to be used for enamel sink or tub and top of the stove. Needs to be used GENTLY and removed right away. Contains microparticles. It is a chemical cleaner, that's why I say int he video you might try another creamy cleanser that you can find in your local dollar store or hardware store, or even grocery store. I hope this helps!
