OYR Frugal & Sustainable Organic Gardening

For all practical purposes, we don't weed our garden. Sure, every now and then we find a weed and pull it, but it happens infrequently enough and requires so little time and effort that it bears little resemblance to what we usually think of as weeding. And we owe it all to mulch.
OYR is all about growing a lot of food on a little land using sustainable organic methods, while keeping costs and labor at a minimum. Emphasis is placed on improving soil quality with compost, mulch, and compost tea. No store-bought fertilizers, soil amendments, pesticides, compost activators, etc. are used.

The exact reason why I went to raised beds this year. I spent hours weeding my old traditional row garden. Now it takes me maybe 5 min a week to get rid of weeds. Great video as always!

Patrick, regarding grass clippings. I mulch my hot peppers every year with grass clippings. I place the fresh clippings on my driveway in a 1" layer and suns heat kills the seeds and dries out the grass completely. My peppers get a slow release of nitrogen all summer when the grass breaks down and produces a thick, hearty stemmed pepper plant that produces a lot. Also, the nitrogen nodules in the roots are quite extensive and great for the soil as well.

I've used the sheet mulch method in between my raised bed just as you showed with cardboard and mulch. It worked out great all summer, no weeds. Every year we want to add an extra raised bed or two and we will continue with sheet mulching under the beds and the walking paths between them. In about 5 years I hope the vegetable garden is big and successful as yours.

ABSOLUTELY! Another benefit of mulch is that one does not have to constantly hoe the garden to break up the hard layer of soil because it is dried out so that rain and water can penetrate quicker and not run off. In my area I am the only one that mulches. Everyone here thinks I am strange yet I am not the one spending hours hoeing and breaking up soil. I had eggplants that were almost gone. I mulched them last week and they are now bouncing back and everything else is looking better as well. Showed this to my next door neighbor but they still won't let me bring them some FREE leaf mulch.

Thanks Patrick. Sheet mulching RULES. I wish I knew all these gardening tips when I was young. But better late than never. If you have weeds, grass, flowers and/or maple trees the have seeds, all will seed & grow in your mulch. Easy to pull BUT if you do like Patrick does & add a layer of new mulch every year or so you will keep these seeds from growing in your mulch.

I usually plant garlic in late Autumn, and to help them survive the winter with snow for about 4 months I put down a heavy layer of leaves. Leaf mould mulch is definitely the best thing I learned about this year. I have heard mixed things about wood chips, as some say they leach goodness out of the soil. I guess if wood chips are on paths then it doesn't matter so much. Also important to distinguish between wood chips and bark chips as they are not the same. Great video, and loving all your ideas. All the best

Last fall/winter I watched numerous videos on leaf and wood chip mulching, including these amazing videos (one of my all time favorite channels). After this research, I placed about eighty bags of leaves on all of my beds and then a layer of wood chips on half of my beds. The worms are burly and beautiful! When I reach down into the soil it is moist. I have rooted several small branches in this mulched soil. They required very little water and have now rooted. Do not be afraid of mulch-wood or leaf. Just try it!!

I had some unknown weed to me that I could not get rid of no matter what I did. Finally in desperation I took some driveway salt that we used in Winter and sparingly spread it out over the line of weeds. The weeds died and I thanked God. Do not use a lot of salt but just enough to cover the bottom of the area where the weeds are. Do not get close to anything that you do not want to see die.

New to mulching - have a Q about it. If you mulch (with woodchips as this video suggests), then the next year, if you want to add compost ammender or something, do you have to push the mulch aside, and then mix it into the soil below, or do you just mix the mulch into the soil? Not sure how this works! Thanks

Do you collect all the organic material yourself for mulching? I'm trying to mulch my paths and around my plants and wondering where I will get more material. I'm thinking of chopping up all the weeds around my yard (especially the ones that have grown tall around the edges). What about woody stemmed ones are they okay to use in the garden or should I save those for the paths?
@OneYardRevolution
@OneYardRevolution 10 жыл бұрын
Yes, we collect all of our mulch ourselves. I think it's a great idea to collect weeds and use them as mulch as long as they haven't gone to seed. I think the woody stemmed leaves would be fine. We collect huge amounts of leaves in the autumn too, along with wood chips from the municipal wood pile and used coffee grounds. Happy mulching!

Ruth Stout advocated heavy mulching in the garden and even wrote a book about it. What I want to know is how much money are you spending per month to get that mulch? Despite living on 2 acres, there are only trees near the creek on my property. The rest is pasture grass and now weeds (including that blasted stoloniferous Johnson grass which is almost impossible to eradicate) so I have to import mulch, usually straw, into the garden.
@OneYardRevolution
@OneYardRevolution 6 жыл бұрын
Our garden is very small, and we spend essentially nothing gathering mulch. We collect leaves in autumn from our neighbors. When we use the car, we just pick them up when we're driving back from the grocery store or some other destination. The wood chip pile is close to our Home Depot store, so I usually pick up wood chips after shopping there. The amount of extra driving is negligible.

I practice no till, wood chip farming. I recently took over a garden that has the worst weed I've encountered. It's an aggressive rhizome based weed that doesn't blink at wood chips or sheet mulching. In fact, it grows THROUGH wood. My approach is to plant lots of plants I like, therefore reducing its physical rhizome, and pluck all weeds that sprout. Hopefully this will train the plant to send its tendrils elsewhere. It's rhizome reminds me of mint, but not as tough. Thoughts?

Kevin Valenti Hi Kevin. Yes, you can punch holes where you want to plant. For established perennials, I'd wait for them to emerge and then sheet mulch around them. I hope this helps!

Paul M Thanks Paul! We've never dealt with that one. Have you tried sheet mulching it?
@spookstaz
@spookstaz 9 жыл бұрын
No, didn't try that but I think it would only work if it includes a strong barrier to prevent the numerous sprouts from coming up from the perennial rhizome roots. Something like a sheet of hard plastic covering the entire area. For me it wasn't an option because I wanted my front flowerbed to be presentable as quickly as possible.

You used the term "sheet mulching", does that phrase denote what you are doing with the cardboard or is it some other technique (you made is sound like it is a different process).

Yes, sheet mulching is when you cover the ground with cardboard and paper and cover it with organic mulch.

Hi Patrick, another great video :D I was wondering, do you have any problems with slugs or are the wood chips too annoying to slug-around on? I tried mulching with leaf litter and it created a slug sanctuary.
@OneYardRevolution
@OneYardRevolution 10 жыл бұрын
Thanks xphilli ! Yes, slugs do thrive in mulch, but I still prefer to use it given all of its advantages. I wouldn't want to fail to create a great environment for earthworms out of concern that some slugs would also move in. I also add coffee grounds to the mulch, which supposedly deters slugs (I'm not 100% convinced).

I am new(ish) to gardening... I have this one area with tenacious weeds... Im thinking about spraying and using your idea with the cardboard and mulch. Have you had any experience with hard to remove vines, invasive weeds and this technique? I am not looking to plant any kind of food just flowers and trees. Thanks!
@OneYardRevolution
@OneYardRevolution 9 жыл бұрын
Allison Anne Hi Allison. our entire backyard used to be covered in weeds and this technique was very effective, including on very invasive weeds like dandelions and onion grass. It may not work on vines like English ivy, though. We removed a lot of English ivy by first cutting back the vines all the way back to the source. Then I drilled a hole in the remaining stems and poured a small amount of lye in each. This completely killed the ivy without affecting any other plants. Just keep in mind that lye is very caustic and has to be handled with great care to avoid injury. I hope this helps.

OneYardRevolution | Frugal & Sustainable Organic Gardening Thank you! I know I have onion grass... the area used to be all brush and we have come a long way in 2 years but just have not been able to clear completely to plant. I am not sure what type of vine we have but I know a few places where it might have started! Thanks again!

I found a mulching company that is giving away free mulch, mulch finely shredded some thick pieces not like wood chips that I saw in some of your videos. Do you have an experience using this kind of mulch in you garden bed?
@OneYardRevolution

How small are the pieces? I'd be reluctant to use it on annual garden beds if it is very fine because it could too easily get mixed into the soil. I wouldn't hesitate to use it on perennials, though.

Yup! But I don't know where to get free wood chips. However, I can get almost two cubic yards for $16, that's a good deal. Leaves are free, just drive around and grab those paper bags people put out, it's not stealing! My landlord has a big lawn in back and doesn't use any chems, free grass, so that's good. The coffee shop down the street puts grounds in a bucket I leave there. My name and phone # are on it, they call me when it's full. And some weeds are delicious, like lamb's quarters and purslane.

That's very handy, not everyone has an 8 foot bed! Back in the day, in Lake Worth, Florida, you could get the city guys chipping branches on the street to dump it at your house, they were happy to comply. that may still be an option for someone. And in Boise we have green lid recycling bins, you put yard and kitchen waste in, and it gets composted. Then if you are a participant you can go to the big pile of finished compost and take a cubic yard of it. That's like 200 square point shovel scoops, I counted! I went on strike last year and didn't garden, or weed, and it was all bare dirt. 9 foot tall amaranth , lamb's quarters and sunflowers, the lesser goldfinches liked it. And of course gnarly mallow, and goatheads! I was sorry, and cleaned it up in the fall, Google Earth took a picture when it was halfway done, I swear that's me leaning over the green lidded can catching my breath. Then, in the spring, grass everywhere. My back still aches. I am a firm believer in cardboard, used carpet is good too, especially the commercial entryway kind with the rubber backing, it lasts forever. Straw is nice, but it doesn't last long, it turns to powder, especially in high traffic areas. If you don't care what it looks like, just cardboard is fine, bicycle boxes are ideal. The recycle guys aren't paying for cardboard anymore here, so it is easy to get.

We used to have a big slug problem, but after years of mulching they've all but vanished. I've only found 2 slugs this spring. Mulch provides an excellent habitat for slug predators like centipedes and ground beetles, and I'm convinced they have brought down the slug population.

Yep, in the past I've mulched with grass clippings, which works for a while, but doesn't last long. I brought in a full yard of fine ground wood mulch this year and it's been amazing! Very few weeds and great moisture retention! A local mulch company sells a trail/path mix for only $8 per yard. Crazy cheap!

+Louise L Ah yes, I can see your point. That makes it a lot harder... or a lot more expensive. I once got my wood chips from a recycling company. It wasn't for free, but I got a decent sized trailer full for about 25 euros. Maybe that's an option for you. Or maybe not, since everything gets turned into fuel. If all attempts at getting cheap wood chips fail, you can always resort to mulching with leaves or grass, like OneYard suggests. Fallen autumn leaves actually contain a lot of nutrients. I gotta be honest, I would prefer wood chips, simply because they look best. :)
