The way you breathe life into inanimate objects is pure magic. You are a true sorcerer of the craft.

Best thing about foam latex is how it retains the "claymation" look which I find people expect with stop motion. I've yet to dabble in making my own puppets via this process, but I feel I should give it a try and probably won't be the only time. Us stop motion folk get compulsive about perfection until we get it done right

I really appreciate your content. Animation has always been at the core of my interest in art in general. When I was younger and still in school I had the time to teach myself the 2d stuff but it never really looked good enough to show to anyone besides friends and family. I was inking and painting on cels. but there wasn't really any good webcam capture tech in the 90s. Long story short I got old. Your channel has been really helpful though since recently trying to take my stop motion game more serious. One big hurtle I need to jump is casting/ mold making. Still haven't got around to experimenting with foam latex.

Don´t forget to dry the molds before put the foam latex, it happened to me that the molds weren't too dry and it ruined my castings till i realize it was water vapor inside the ultracal 30.

I didn't know you cast the faces in resin and use sticky wax.. fascinating.. and I noticed the poster of Dragon's Lair behind on the wall with Mr Don Bluth Director, awesome.. I was in touch with them recently, about that course they offer, but it's super expensive to study... all good stuff.. great video.. interesting to watch..

you make the process look FAR easier than it is. I'm so jealous! i can never get through the whole process without stuff going wrong, and i must have spent hundreds of hours daydreaming about the best way to get a moveable face for expression rather than replacement faces (i'm not a good enough sculptor to get faces that will all end up looking like the same character, and it's a TON of work to do replacement faces if you're not supernaturally gifted like you appear to be!). do you have any advice for the hinged jaw approach? i kind of think that with sticky wax eyebrows and a hinged jaw, that might be my best approach. even without the best mouth expressions, i think body posture and eyebrows and eyelids closing/opening can reveal most of what a character is feeling.

I almost tried this few months back ,spent £120 on electric fan oven and £60 odd for an electric mixer.. and even bought the Kathi Zung dvd download online which you guys originally learnt from right.. she's really nice person.. I had a good chat with her, and then I felt so overwhelmed with all the different stages of the process I sent everything back lol for a refund and I decided not for now.. as I needed to get on with learning other aspects of the craft.. it's amazing these latex foam puppets.. and you guys done an excellent job in both of your films and other bits you've done Justin.. but I would say doing this kind of puppet is good for someone who has enough experience with sculpting, and maybe also drawing, it helps, and someone who can follow the logical steps through to completion.. it is a little tricky to learn, but awesome if you can get into it.. if the guy from the craft store had wrote back to me about what foam I needed etc I probably would have given it my best shot at that time, but they delayed me, which left me feeling stuck, people forget that being creative isn't always easy or fun, it's a learning process, so that's filled with frustrations and obstacles to overcome right.. just sharing my experience incase anyone out there feels the same way.. I am probably going to try again in the future to do this.. even though it's a dying or dead thing now, cause of 3d printing etc or just - there's easier cheaper quicker ways of doing build-up puppets.. but I think my next step is to get a good outside space / shed to keep all the mess away from my living space.. all this craft stuff really makes such a lot of mess.. I can't stress that enough.. if you look at learning to do this long term, I think anything is possible..don't rush it.. lesson learned there, I personally felt pressured to learn it, trying to skip too far ahead before I was ready to start this.. you have to have sculpts of your design done first.. and I'm still learning.. and I'm so eager just to keep animating.. that takes up so much time.. your lucky Justin that you have a lovely wife Shel and that you guys can delegate different creative roles, two heads better than one and all that jazz.. doing everything on your own can be so overwhelming... I wish I had someone to work with... awesome stuff, you always inspire me, you guys inspire so many people, it's great, but latex foam puppets do need a bit more outlay.. it's not something we see much of these days, which actually makes it more appealing, the look, the way it moves, they seem so real, but I'm sure that's more to do with your skill as an animator, you makes everything seem so fluid Justin.. 🙏🏼❤️ hat off to you.. What foam density do yall try to use?
