Dr. Sally Spencer-Thomas knows first hand the challenges and stigma we face with suicide prevention and mental health. At the heart of all social movements are stories. Change is possible when we tell our stories. In this deeply moving and personal TEDx Talk, Dr. Sally invites us to join her on a social justice journey and shows us how to shift the culture from the bias and discrimination we currently have, to one of empowerment and dignity; one story at a time. As a clinical psychologist, inspirational international speaker, impact entrepreneur, and survivor of suicide loss, Dr. Spencer-Thomas sees the issues of suicide prevention and mental health promotion from many perspectives. Dr. Spencer-Thomas was moved to work in suicide prevention after her younger brother, a Denver entrepreneur, died of suicide after a difficult battle with bipolar condition.
Known nationally and internationally as an innovator in social change, Spencer-Thomas has helped start up multiple large-scale, gap filling efforts in mental health including the award-winning campaign Man Therapy (a program using humor to engage men in mental health) and the nation’s first comprehensive workplace program designed to help employers with the successful prevention, intervention, and crisis management of suicide. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

My mom just died recently from her battles with depression. She was the most beautiful woman and she raised me to be such an amazing man. I can’t really see the future without her. I don’t really know what to do now. I went to a support group and a woman in there said a very profound thing that suicide isn’t the cause of death. Depression is. It’s a disease that takes over the mind. It breaks my heart that I didn’t realize the state my mom was in. She would even tell me triggering things but for some reason I didn’t see them until now. Keep an eye out on your loved ones and don’t run from the signs like I did because I didn’t understand them.

Christian R Please accept my sincerest condolences. 😥 My brother also had depression. Clyde just turned 29, I saw him the night before he died from "depression". You can't be harsh with urself for not " seeing the signs". Your mother & my brother died from "depression". So I ask of u to continue going to meetings with others going through this. 35 yrs. ago is when Clyde died via hanging; in R.I we have (safe place) a group that ( listens & shares ) about the loved one. The Samaritans in my state ARE MARVELOUS ! I hope in ur state it's similar. If you need someone aside from family to talk to, they're there, as well as me. Take care of urself & never ever forget Your Beautiful Mom...ill bet she loved you to pieces honey. 💞 It starts to get a bit better with time...believe it or not. Gods Speed P.s. in time I pray you use your & moms story to educate others. 😘 hugs

The majority of people simply can't be bothered to take time out for their friends who are suffering. Most friendships in my experience are superficial everything seems to be working out when there are no problems. You laugh and joke but when you experience a depressive episode friends don't have the capacity to engage and really listen to you. That's why I withdraw from the world because nobody apart from my therapist gives a damn.

There comes a point when pain...emotional OR physical(For me the emotional is 100x more intolerable than physical) that a person has tried every available method to stop, but the cure isn't going to happen, should be stopped by any way that person chooses. Misery from wake till sleep(when you can get to sleep through the pain) isn't life. That's existing. In agony. So that it doesn't make others that can't feel even a sliver of that pain uncomfortable and have them miss you on your birthday and death day for a few years??? They say suicide is selfish. EXPECTING ME TO DO THIS ANOTHER 40 YEARS!!!!....IS SELFISH.

People say no becuz themselves don’t want to feel “pain” of someone dying so it’s selfish to ask someone not too. Time doesn’t always fix things or make it better and being filled with hope kinda makes no sense, we all die eventually anyways

Father died at 54, in my arms, due to alcoholism) , I understand the great pain and stigma associate with the loss of a loved one by suicide. I didn't just "Survive," I found a way to "Thrive."' Need a friend? -@ Teardrops That Tango. ✞ Friendz; You are strong. You are beautiful. When it feels like the rest of the world is unreachable, help is out there. I dont think there has been a day I can remember that I haven't wanted to die. I can't just do it because of the pain it would cause my family. So I've just been doing the most dangerous things I can, in hopes that I'll die in the course of it. Then my family will think it was accidental and I went doing something I loved. When in reality I'm ending my pain, without creating more for them.

What an honor to have Dr. Spencer-Thomas as a colleague. I completely agree. The lens of psychopathology in our culture rather than understanding human problems is at the heart of the problem of discrimination. Perpetuating diagnosis and pharmacology rather than the strategies of Dr. Spencer-Thomas for social change is so essential. I am sorry to hear the label "bipolar" referenced so often as it may be a cover up for substance use or difficulty modulating emotions in families that had interpersonal challenges, trauma is often the root in my experience and we as humans do not understand how easily we can hurt or fail to help one another. So glad Dr. Spencer-Thomas is so eloquent and passionate !

Great talk. I wish i could join, except that suicide, i believe, is like rising sea levels caused by climate change, simply unstoppable, because of the pressures of modern day existence. Silencing the raging "monkey mind", i think, is key...and when enough individuals practicing meditation reach critical mass, it is possible to minimize, not eradicate, suicide. Too bad that while i was in New York City silencing the mind, my son, aged 39, was in Manila struggling with his. And because i had to extend my stay so that i could attend his elder sister's wedding in June, it was impossible to return on the 15th of May, as was previously scheduled. He died on the 16th. Meditation works. I had to quickly learn it a few years back in order to save my mind. I had the beginnings of mental problems (anxiety, paranoia) having to do with an intolerant religious organization, a church! that had far too many hit men. . . which is another story. There just wasn't enough time to impart that crucial knowledge essential to my son's survival in modern life.. Heck, it was a big problem teaching him, as a child, how to read. He had dyslexia. He was a good son,a good man, a great artist. He will be sorely missed. Seems he was alone while struggling with his "problem", whatever it was, leading to a permanent solution to an impermanent problem. I realize this suicide is a "curve ball" thrown at me ( at the entire family and the many friends of Kinkin!!) as a consequence of Life. And that we are all really spirits with bodies, not the other way around. I suggest that everybody therefore must, for the sake of survival in these interesting times, take to heart this ancient truism : You are not your body...you are not even your mind... you are Consciousness. Here's to that critical mass i spoke of earlier...Cheers!

Everyday is a fight. You never give up. It is a very selfish act. Life is hard. It's the people you leave behind. I will be dead soon enough. Why would anyone want to hurry that up? It is not a selfish act, the pain I had and her siblings feel, my 32 yr old daughters pain was 100 times more painful and her brain couldnt tell her anything to do but to leave this world. It would invalidate her humanness and what she thought for, if we think it's our fault . She planned Monthsin advance how to leave in a peaceful way and going to Jesus would be her only way out. Will I ever understand nope. But i know she doesn't have to suffer any longer. Imagine her living every day with severe mental distress

Depression is a terrible condition. People fight everyday, they put so much effort into their lives and it gets to the point when they are tired of fighting, tired of trying and they just can't hold on, they just can't see any future for them where their pain is gone and things get better. People die not because they want to, they do it to end their pain. Doctors can help most people find their way again, for others they need a different type of help which due to funding issues does not exist.

@@202triciae You're correct. What's selfish is expecting someone in relentless agony that YOU HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED from daybreak to nightfall...if they sleep...to spend DECADES like that so it doesn't make a few other people uncomfortable or miss them being around from time to time.
