We were very fortunate to sit down with Rodney Mullen for the "Tony Hawk The Perfect Storm" piece to discuss what he believes the definition of skateboarding is, what Tony Hawk means to skateboarding and how the Tony Hawk Pro Skater video games affected skateboarding as a whole. Rodney enlightens us beyond our wildest imagination. Sit back and relax while Rodney dives deep into historical skate stories behind the first ever 900, skate innovation, getting kicked out of spots, his relationship with Tony Hawk, The Olympics, Powell Peralta and the Bones Brigade, early contest skating, the language of skating, video parts, freestyle and much more. Skaters mentioned: Tony Hawk, Bob Burnquist, Danny Way, Rob Sluggo Boyce, Stacy Peralta and more.
There are still some Tony Hawk Limited Edition signed boards are available now at www.storiedskateboarding.com
STORIED is produced by The Strive Collaborative, a creative agency formed by Chase Gabor and Clayton Gabor in 2023.

His words are so fun to discover. Years of my life just watching these undone things, these impossible things just to find out, he does them both ways, all ways. Litteraly, the impossible, he just did whenever, between meals, before a half mile march to the bathroom. My never been done before, was his 20yrs ago. Then to discover all of the fun little movements in that trick, that open the floodgates to so many other possibilities. I laugh a bit to here him say, "I was shy" when Tony got that fame. So many people were already fully aware of his progress, just waiting to what was next. Secondhand smoke, still gets played every time some kid says I can skate. Can you, do you know what style is? It's all up to you. Style can be anything.

I'm going to get shit on for this, so I'll preface this with: Rodney is the GOAT and most influential skater of all time. That said, he over-explains obvious things ad nauseam. @@pigs6486 sure he won a lot. But did he create nearly every technique, every skill that basketball players MUST learn in order to participate in the sport? Because that is what Rodney Mullen did. @@johnnycoolguy9554 exactly. When I heard him speak about the language of skateboarding, how modular and adaptive and perfectly descriptive to a scientific level of precision it is, all I could think was, "yeah, Rodney, that was mostly your doing. Sure, many others contributed to it, but you were one of the most influential elements in creating that system and redefining the way we see and experience skateboarding even today. So thank you." The man is so humble and so quick to commend the work of others that just by listening to him, you wouldn't necessarily realize how much of the vocabulary and base structural composition of skateboarding was born from his incredible mind. I just hope people realize the immeasurable impact that Rodney Mullen had on the artform of skating and the community surrounding it. Absolute legend. He and Tony provided the shoulders on which everyone who came after them could stand.

Man listening to Rodney you can just tell how present he is. Skateboarding really brings that out in people. You can't be in your head and you really learn to enjoy life for the fleeting collection of moments it is. It really is fascinating how the world has always tried to push skateboarding into the world of "sport" with contests and various other things. And through each generation it always pushes back. It truly is an art beyond what "art" can even be described as. Anyone in skateboarding can do an NBD, and someone can do a trick so beautifully that it will make you forget that anyone else has ever done it.

His strict parents had alot resistance in the beginning regarding him skateboarding. Luckily Stacy Peralta went and pleaded with them to let Rodney go adroad to competitions. Which enabled him to follow his true passion. The pressures were huge to stay home, work and help the family like everyone else where theyre from . His father was really strict and didnt support his son skating at all, because he thought it was childish and he didnt believe it could be an actual respectable paying profession. So Rodney practiced his routines at night after his family obligations. All that stress affected him socially and he didnt like doing interviews, and was initially an outsider. He was quirky and misunderstood by other skaters who mocked him in the beginning.. But the Bones brigade /Powell Peralta skaters and eventually the world would realized he was lightening in a bottle.. And would become the King of Flatland Freestyle. .Ive got mad respect for Rodney above all others in pro skateboarding simply for what he went through to be there. Those teenage years are hard enough but finding ones self, while polishing his craft to perfection, and being the literal rope in a tug of war between parents and promoter must have been really stressful place to be.. under the microscope of fame and the weight of guilt from leaving home to follow his dream would have made most folks more reserved. or just plain antisocial at best. But he used all that angst for fuel and kept his focus on his ultimate goal. The pressures he internalized and handled as a minor back then.. (and without airing it out in the media publicly, not for sympathy nor for fame or respect) im sure, helped shape him into the insightful gem of a person we have today. Also his parents came to their senses after winning a couple competitions and have fully supported him and his choice to skate since. i would imagine they realized they were wrong about his potential as a young man and about skatboarding in general.

Respect to the man that invented magic flips, landed impossibles, gave imagination to every skater to pursue the limitless bounds of imagination. This is what the creators of anything new sound like when they talk about it! They may not be as eloquent as MR.Mullen, but I assure you they’re as passionate. The creation of something new takes passion like no other!! The creation of anything new is born in the minds of passionate people, like Mullen, Hawk & Gonz for skateboarding!! I guarantee that Davinci talked about perspective and painting like this. Passion is the currency that matters most, find it, cultivate it, let it grow and drive you, and the peace and joy will follow!! Thank you Mr.Mullen for cultivating your passion so we can see how it’s done!!

This man IS the definition of freestyle skateboarding. Without him freestyle may have never even hit our radar. Rodney Mullen is the innovator and his true story, is a story of survival through focus.. focus on the goal and not the existential noise surrounding us. Thanks for your beautiful eccentricity and unwaivering dedication my friend. Love and Respect.

Dude invented the kickflip, it wasn't untill I played project 8 till I truly saw the magic of freestyle skating (the mocap surpasses anything even in modern games). He's an amazing artist

He also invented the flatground ollie, nobody had figured out how to pop the board up back then. He invented nearly every basic flip trick and many freestyle tricks and grinds like the darkslide or primo slides. I find it incredibly impressive how he was able to transition from competing in freestyle to street when that became popular in the ‘90s. I remember him saying it was extremely difficult and he did not like it at first. I guess he had to get more used to tricks at speed, gaps, grinds, etc.

Street wouldn’t exist it’s because of him that they had the tricks they had to learn. I hope I can reach even a quarter of a step of the way to such an astonishing street/freestyle skater. Right now I can Ollie any time, finger flip kickflip way just about anytime and if I get lucky shuvit. Lol if I get super lucky I can kickflip moving it just seems a little easier.

I will be moved to tears when i attempt to grasp the gravity of what Rodney Mullens skateboard meant to him...and what he meant to all of skateboarding in return...the power in that is mind blowing. And it's another incredible example of love and the human experience. Staceys Peraltas documentaries arent just magnificent documentaries...they are works of love especially when looking at Dogtown and Bones Brigade. I know Jay Adams changed my life and made it just a little bit better...and so did my skateboard.

I started skating when I was ten and I'm now forty eight and still ask myself what skateboarding is. What it means to be a skater and its place in society. Is it an art or is it a science? Does it float somewhere between the two. I've never really been able to come to a satisfactory conclusion but listening to this interview is as close as I've ever come to finding the answer.

A lot of people viewing this still don’t HEAR what Rodney is saying. They don’t feel what he’s saying. Having a love and passion for something to the point where there’s a struggle to communicate to other human beings of how high of a level it really is to them. They’re scared that they will never have enough of it. They will never be satisfied with the levels of skill they have achieved. Success is only a word for the envious. Trophies and fame aren’t what they seek, but as artist they look for influence and motivation. Pouring inspiration into the crowds is this man’s trophy while still seeking to inspire himself even more every day. One huge thing people fail to see is RESPECT. He hated the competitions because he still had so much respect for other’s work and dedication to skateboarding while others failed to see that. All they saw were “Rodney’s the GOAT” and “Rodney’s going to kill the competition” , leaving the respect aspect out of it. Skating is an art and every single artist is different. Rodney, Tony, Haslam, Daewon, Sheckler, Rowley, Thomas, Way, Williams, Muska…… the list goes on and on. Skateboarding is absolutely unique because unlike football, basketball, or any other sport that takes a toll on the body, most skateboarders are still skating back home afterwards. When the cameras aren’t rolling, skaters still are. They can’t live without it. This interview was amazing and we need so much more of them from Rodney and the other greats that continue motivating and inspiring the masses. There’s a great Ryan Sheckler documentary called “Rolling Away”. I encourage you to watch that. Whether you like Sheckler or not, it shows how most if not all skateboarders think and proves what drives them to keep going in life. It also proves Rodney’s point of how there may not ever be enough for something you’re really in love with.

Thank you guys for this rare and incredible insight into one of my favorite people in the world. This guy, with the unparalleled combination of his uncaged creativity and absolutely unstoppable work ethic and dedication to his craft, both defined what skateboarding was and continuously changed our perception of what it could be. If it weren't for Rodney, I can't imagine that skateboarding would have reached anywhere near the heights of not only popularity that it received, but the respect it garnered through recognition of its very unique place in the overlap between sport and artform. He was instrumental in taking a toy, a transportation aid, an initially clunky attempt to transliterate the flowing poetry of surfing onto the hard and ungiving asphalt, into an art residing in a class of its own with depth and subtlety so far beyond what anyone could have imagined at the time. He might not be as popular or universally recognized as his good friend Mr. Hawk, but he is at least as responsible (if not moreso) for creating the depth and methodology of execution that raised it from a simple pastime to a respected form of expression unlike any other. So thank you for making this happen, because guys like him are too important and influential for their greatness to go undocumented, and he is far too humble to self-promote his way into the public eye and force that recognition. Takes folks like you guys to make that happen, and on behalf of everyone who lives and breathes this shit, thank you for that gift.
