Stories from Dai Woodham locomotive graveyard Barry

It may seem odd that people might feel sentimental about a scrap yard, but Dai Woodham's locomotive scrap yard in Barry was unique. And it seems to have touched 100s of people who lived in the town.
In this video I tell the stories that many shared with me about the place. I also interview people who worked at the yard to get a feel what life was like day to day for the people who kept it ticking over. I also speak to people who knew Dai Woodham (including his wife and some of his children).
We also have some expertise from steam enthusiast Gavin Douglas OBE.

Very interesting, i visited in 1980, and again in 1983 to record the yard on super 8 Kodak cine film, and also on colour slides. I still look at them, amazed that almost all but two were preserved. Sad/happy memories of our beloved steam locomotives, thank goodness Dai Woodham didn't cut them immediately like the other yards did. 😊

Da iawn Graham, for a very interesting look back at the trains graveyard. Back in the mid 70s we used to cycle down from Wenvoe Terrace, go scrambling on the ash path, and then climb all over the old engines. Happy days.

Really enjoyed this. Thanks very much. The Harry Potter locomotive came from The North Yorkshire Moors Railway I believe. Hogwarts station in the film was Goathland station on the NYM railway. It's also the station used on the popular television series Heart Beat. Goathland village is Aidensfield. The viaduct the train runs over in Harry Potter is the Glenfinnan viaduct on the route from Fort William to Mallaig.

Like you Graham I remember those trains and my brother and I would spend hours staring at them on our annual summer day out on the Island. They were an iconic aspect to Barry.
