Great cautionary tale about the importance of proper hydration because even extremely fit individuals such as yourself can fall victim to this condition. I have made that exact climb up Bull in the CCW direction and it’s tough so I know exactly what you went through. Glad to hear a good samaritan saved your day/life.

Kudos Anthony! Edit to add: Watching the news or social media you could think our country is in deep trouble. While we certainly do have issues, there are SO MANY good people out there. Regardless of where you sit, we are all in this life together. And good people outnumber the others.

Been there and it is no fun - luckily I was about 10 miles from home on a long road ride. Stopped at a convenience store and bought a couple of sports drinks and took a break and then made it home. I had not ran out of water, but I had not hydrated enough before the ride. Glad it worked out ok - you had a Good Samaritan that day. Take care and lessons learned.

Dag gone Clint, man that was the limit man, I'm glad it wasn't deadly. My cousin just got out of the hospital because he got too hot. His kidneys nearly shut down, they put him on dialysis, he almost died. I work in it and am used to the heat and it was at my limit. I cut hay with a open tractor during those 108 days. The radiator was blowing about 150 on me. The way I survived was I kept my bandana wet around my neck and I drink a gallon of green tea plus about a half gallon of water between 4am and 8am every morning then I keep the fluids going all day when it's hot like it's been. The key is keep it going down because when I got in trouble years ago it came on me fast. Please be careful out there, the older we get the rougher the heat affects or effects us. You push very hard and that with heat indexes above 100 is not a good combination. Love you brother and take care of yourself.

Clint, The heat wave is not just in the SE USA but the whole east. I was laughing when we rode and it was only 38deg by you when I came down from NY. Right now as I sit in a cabin in Maine with rides planned it is going to top out at mid 90's with high humidity. I came here with bicycles and kayaks. My decision on hot days as I have gotten older and wiser is Paddle or Pedal. Cycling will always come first but really self preservation should. I have bonked so many times riding in hot weather I cannot forget how bad it feels to be so sick I can't function afterwards. At least when I am kayaking I can splash water on myself, and usually my kayak expeditions are 3 to 6 mi not 60. I enjoy these activities but not enough to die for. I'd rather live to fight another day. Clint Eastwood said in one of his movies " a man has got to know his limitations", words to live by. As far as dehydration, being a professional paramedic it is a very real thing and I always have 2x the water I need when going in to the unknown. This ensures when I get back to my car I have cold water. I understand sometimes we are so busy we forget to do this but it has to become routine. I also have a vehicle where the tire is underneath it and it is a pain to get to it also with special tools only the vehicle comes with. Off on a tangent, problem with heat exhaustion is if you don't get water in to you when your body needs it you have missed the mark and you will get nauseous and That is when as a paramedic I insert IV fluids in to a patient and it is amazing how fast that person feels better. I also administer anti nausea drugs so when they can take something by mouth they won't vomit. This week I traveled to Maine to ride the XNHAT (Cross New Hampshire Adventure Trail) on my gravel bike with my wife and a friend and for the most part it is tree covered just like mtb, but as you have stated unlike road riding where air is passively cooling the rider some gravel rides and mtb rides you are just not going as fast. Riders are lured in to a sense of security and like you get jammed in the end. SO please stay hydrated and learn from this experience.....Have fun and ride safe.

Heat injury is no joke! Rarely it can be fatal. When you start to feel light headed and nausea, you’re in trouble. I ran into this in May on my longest ride of the year on the hottest day of the year! You probably needed paramedics more than you needed someone to change your tire. I was sitting on the curb and a couple that lived near by stopped and asked if I was okay. They brought me a bag of ice, water and Gatorade and towels to soak in the ice water to cool me down. After drinking all that I could, wrapping myself in cold towels and pouring the remainder of the ice water over my head, I slowly finished the last 10 miles of my ride. Without this couple my next option was 911! On extremely hot days it’s almost impossible to replace fluid loss when you’re working hard! I will certainly limit my activity during heat waves!

I had a similar experience at Uwharrie a couple years ago. I was well prepared for the day but my buddy wasn't. He's usually the type that jumps right out of his car and ready so I was already rolling around on my bike, but on that day he wasn't. It was almost an hour before he finally got his bike sorted out and we were off, and no more than a mile in he's chain breaks. By this time it was already a 100° I've did this ride many times so I know how to pack for it but I'd already used up half my water waiting. After almost completely sweating out I decide to go on by myself not realizing I've used half my water already. I'm pretty fit and usually good in the heat and strict on how I do things, but on this day it was out of my control and I wasn't keeping up with my hydration. After several miles of descending there's a long techie climb and I got almost to the top when I started getting dizzy, nauseated and really hot like never before. I had to get off my bike and sit on the ground for a little while. As soon as I cooled off I made my way back down the trail and took a fire lane road back and just barely made it to the trailhead. I've had a few episodes like that racing Motocross over the years and just recently depleted myself and while rehydrating from that I went a little over on electrolytes. That was kinda scary too. Be safe out there

I can commiserate with you on this. Like you I live in Florida. I cycle and play a lot of tennis. When I turned 55 I began to notice heat tolerance issues. At first, I would overheat if the temp was in the mid to upper 90’s. Now, at 68 yrs old, when the temp hits around 87, I can find myself becoming excessively tired - not a fitness thing, and in my case not a hydration issue either - solely related to overheating - not easy to control that thru training.

You nailed the issue… having to drive to the trails. I live 30 minutes from the trailhead and I can get ON the trail at 9am before the heat. Only downside is the wildlife also likes to get out early and I often encounter bears wanting to race. LOL Yeah…. My last flat tire, I was near the trailhead but there was only gravel areas. I sacrificed the tire and drove 5mph to a flat asphalt lot to change the tire. Gravel is not a good platform for a car jack.

22%? Roots? I'm hike-a-biking at that point. Many newer cars come with a can of fix-a-flat instead of a jack and spare. My Saturn hybrid didn't have a jack and spare because that's where the batteries were. I have saved several people with a 12v air compressor I keep in my car I drive across the country every summer; I always have 2 gallons of water in my car. It might not be fresh. It might not be cool, but it is wet. There have been times when that hot car quenches my thirst.

Anthony did not save your life, because you were just a few miles from Dahlonega. If you really felt like you were gonna die, your friend jumps on his ebike and rides to town to bring back the icy water and food you should have brought with you. At 20mph, this takes 30 minutes tops. While he's there, he can ride to a wrecker or call them to come fix your flat. Even with heat exhaustion, you could have ridden your own bike to safety. Dahlonega is 8 minutes by car from the trail, and you had driven several miles. You were close, unless you weren't smart enough to head straight for Dahlonega. Have your friend pump up his spare, and put the jack back in the car. Nobody was going to die that day, if you drank two bottles on a 2.5 hour ride.

Have never been the same since and only a couple steps out of bed staggering down the hallway it's time to pound the H2O again. Riding with a 100 oz. hydro pack is a must as it forces me to drink as I lighten the load on my back. FOLKS BE CAREFUL.

Some days you’ll use your gravel bike, some days your trail (analog) bike and some days downhill (without the heavy lifting). As a fit person, E-Bikes are also a useful part of a training program - to build endurance (like you know) - to train in a particular heart beat range, while still doing trails you love. Two young men in their 40s just learning to "be prepared", I am surprised but not surprised. Maybe we should bring back the Boy Scout troops.

Getting into a situation where you’re unprepared will happen to every single one of us at one point. It’s life. But yes, the more training the better and Boy Scouts is a great way to do that!

Why do people keep saying an analogue bike...it is a bike.
@ClintGibbs

Not really sure where the term came from but it’s the adopted industry term at this point.

@@ClintGibbs Just checked three manufacturers' site (Scott, Specialised and Niner) and none of them referred to an analogue. It was bike or an E-bike/Electric. I noticed that Niner are going over to a direct selling model for Europe.

@@johnlesoudeur3653 not really saying bike companies label it like that but I’ve heard many people (some in the industry) use the phrase to distinguish between the two.

I downloaded the Specialized app tonight and noticed on their app when you go to add a bike they have the option of e-Bike or analog bike. So Specialized has adopted that term.

So, we are calling real bikes analog bikes now? Rubbish. Don't be afraid to offend your ebike buddies or viewers dude - a real bike is a real bike (and an ebike is a motorbike). This happens to us all - I had a terrible heat exhausted ride 2 weeks ago. Keep climbing dude - you are a high level competitive cyclist that has worked hard for years to establish and maintain great fitness. Don't give in to the let's all get lazier and fatter movement - keep riding riding real bikes brother.

Yeah, I’m not crazy about the term “analog bike” but it’s kind of the industry term for segmenting the two.
