After weeks of snow and rain, this week we're mostly working outside: starting to build a new retaining wall, clearing brambles (lots of them) and opening up an old road so that we can finally walk around the house and outbuildings again.
We're Isis & Bertus. In the summer of 2023 we moved into a neglected farmhouse in a tiny village in the northwest of Italy. The last inhabitants left some 10 years ago, but large parts of the property have been empty for over 20 years.
Thank you for joining us on our adventure!

Goodness you’ve shifted some stuff this week! Nice to see dad again he’s like a one man workforce! He certainly likes to get stuck into the job! It’s nice to see the love of family members go into a project, like visiting old friends when ever you think back to that job you will smile and remember the good times! You have certainly made headway in the gardening department, what a difference you have made! Whilst at the end of the day you may ache and wonder will your back ever recover it’s also very rewarding to stand back and see just what you have both achieved! There’s not a much nicer way to spend a day clearing brambles and overgrown areas in the sunshine and listening to the blackbird greeting spring as she makes her first tentative appearance. The Rosie glow of the light at the start of the video is just beautiful, your videos always leave a feeling of quiet reflection. A calmness that is almost palpable. Always beautifully shot. ❤

Today it was evident how over the years nature has taken over the area and now after all the effort a retaining wall has emerged and how wonderfully the house now composes itself, today's new houses do not look so beautiful, mysterious and cosy. Thank you for all the peace and quiet you give in spite of the sound of the lawnmower with your videos, the beautiful views, the singing of the birds. See you next week, I wish you beautiful sunny weather.💚🍀🌞🐝🐈‍⬛

Beautiful place! I love the wall! I love the plan to make the lower terrace part of the garden. I have a question. It looked as though some of the brambles might have been (black berries) black raspberries. I understand they are sometimes called brambles. Are you familiar with them? On 40 acres I am sure there are others that will be in a more acceptable location for growing and collecting their fruit. It is a delectable treat! A cobbler with ice cream or whipped cream, is unbeatable. Also good fresh, with biscuits or pancakes. If you haven't already, I hope you will have a chance to try them. Black berries used to be an abundant, forageable food in our area. They are nearly gone from over development.
@storiesfromthecascina
@storiesfromthecascina 3 ай бұрын
Yes definitely! We sometimes foraged blackberries in the Netherlands/Belgium too. Last fall I didn't really get round to doing it beyond a few handfulls to eat fresh. There's a big difference between the plants here, some have big and juicy berries and others stay small and kind of hard and dry. Definitely planning on keeping a few of the good ones :-)

@@storiesfromthecascinamy Dad acquired a largish Kubota along with 23 acres mol (more or less) in Texas. It was essential! And it was still working well when my parents passed within a year of each other, after 20 years of work and fun on their hobby farm. You can use it to mow meadows, move and stack hay, spray potassium on the orchard, carry a deceased horse or other animal to the back of the property, dig a big hole and bury it, move mulch, help root out deadwood (in TX, mesquite), and many other chores.

Do you pay a deposit for bottles in Italy? I wonder how much $ you’d get for the bottles? 😮 Strange that they’d just toss them in there instead of return for the cash. If you clean it out it would make a good storage area for summer things to keep out of weather during winter. Maybe add a little door or something.
