A fishing boat capsizes entering Noyo Harbor, Fort Bragg CA in a storm. The Coast Guard rescue boat is standing by in the distance. Faster boats were able to surf into the harbor.

Holy Cow !!!! I got a slow, old wooden Beals lobster boat, work a tough inlet in the north east and had my fair share of hairy passages. This captain must know his boat and inlet like the back of his hand, got the feeling he's been there and done that.

I was there & watched this from the bluff. If I remember right they had been staying out to sea, waiting for a chance to come in for quite some time. The captain finally felt he had to go for it.

Wow..I remember this! I wasn't down in Noyo at the time, but was nearby. I think we watched this from the bridge! It was pretty intense.....November 1987....what a year for storms, eh?

Very very lucky. Either his cargo shifted or he's taken on a huge amount of water. That boat is very near to capsize and sinking.

"Nice" days at Noyo aren't much better than that!!

Very amazing footage let alone the event itself. Me thinks he was bucking a maximum ebb tide so couldn't quite make way against the current. These old boats very rarely make over 6-7 knots to the water.So if you have 5-6 knot opposing current.

If their stern was any wider they wouldnt have suceeded in that manouver. Seems like they had some free-surface on board.

I've seen some hairy stuff on the sea but that one tops them all.

Actually the term for what that boat did is 'broach' not capsize.

Broach, not capsize.

Why do they even bother trying to come in when it's like this why can't they wait it out till the tide changes?

fucking nuts im a crabber out of newport oregon i had same thing happen at night i left finger indents on and under the galley table crossing the bar is the worst part of winter here

Also from Newport and have fished, crabbed, shrimped, out of here on many boats a lot in my past, and Yaquina bay has a serious way about doing that from time to time lol, but never understood sitting in the galley during a bar crossing, I was always taught to be vigilant, woke, and ready and was always there for my skip to be his eyes, to call out the distance between waves as we'd be doming in or on the deck, but anywhere besides the engine room, unless forced to, or the galley table lol... I haven't fished in 5-6 years now though since having my daughter, and absolutly miss the shit out of it...

That's the worst captain who is still alive.

He had been stuck at sea for 2 days waiting by the harbor burning fuel. He didn’t have enough fuel to make the next port south or north after fishing and waiting by the harbor mouth. He died a fewmonths ago in the same area and I miss him. He was an awesome guy.

Why wouldn't they wait for the storm to pass? That's foolhardy.

why not upgrade the engine? waste of time on travelling and risk everyone's life in bad weather.
@tincoffin7 жыл бұрын
Won't do any good . The limitation on speed is in the hull not the engine. 7-8 knots and you are reaching hull speed.
@norml.hugh-mann5 жыл бұрын
Its real easy to tell someone they need bigger engines when you do t know what you're talking about.
