My old dad , a keen Folkboat sailor always decorated his boat with more fenders than I thought it needed. Being a man who would later be awarded The Arctic Star he would not consider the comments from a fashion conscious jetty teenager. Whilst pulling fenders out of the std cockpit locker his words were simple. "THESE FENDERS ARE NO GOOD IN THE LOCKER". Discussion over. I'm 63 now, all my fenders are out of the locker on Amicula.

Good, sensible advice. A friend of mine had his fairleads and parts of his cap rail torn away in a big northerly blow into Cowes many years ago, because he stayed where he was and didn't move out. I was crewing with him and it was a salutary lesson.

Good advice as always Tom. We tend to set head springs and aft springs as well as our normal fore and aft springs when we get a bit of a blow like that. As you say use winches to balance the loads. Also we reduce our canvas. Dodgers, spray hood and bimini to a minimum. Local knowledge and knowing how to read a barometer is skill we dont see so much these days. However, the new electronic barometer we got last year as a gift to supplement our old brass & bellows type gives us an electronic track of pressure over 24 hours. A fantastic bit of kit we can look at everytime we enter the companion way. How things have changed...... Sail Safe Guys, Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.

Wise words. Only real damage to my own yacht was in an exposed harbour in Borkum last year and sadly there was no other anchorage or spot in the harbour we could get to. It blew and rocked so hard on the incoming rollers it sheared three pairs of 1" bronze Clyde cleats leaving us hanging by one line on the anchor windlass.

There is much to be said for closed fairleads as you are using here, they're not very fashionable but great for feeding the warp through on to a convenient winch and very reassuring if there's much tide. Easy for Med mooring to a dock and also good for improvised med-mooring to a lamppost on a breakwater! (which I was obliged to do once on Ua Pou)

I was anchor in Faro Portugal in 1968 when a humdinger of a blow came in from the south west, the Avon redstart was flying like a kite at the stern. When we arrived in Gibraltar a couple of weeks later some guys who had been tied up in the old destroyer pens described the same night. Waves were coming across the harbour into the pens, hitting the wall at the back and going back out again, you couldn't get an old tyre at any price apparently. Ain't sailing fun..

@@TomCunliffeYachtsandYarns A little background to this story. We were anchored outside the harbour at Faro, a low railway bridge had to be lifted to get in and we weren't staying so stopped outside. We were in a mk 2 plywood Silhouette, we arrived there via a 4 day crossing of the Biscay and down the coast of Europe. The story of the Destroyer pens was passed to us by the owner skipper of the Bristol Pilot Cutter Raider, he'd moved to between Sheppard's marina and the runway when we arrived. We'd been aboard Raider in Lisbon. We also went aboard a full-sized replica of a Viking long ship ( complete with a Perkins diesel engine ) that was moored in Gib. It was one of a pair that were built for the film Alfred the Great. The other, so we were told, was set fire to for the film, but the shot ended up on the cutting room floor..

What excellent advice and well given! Listen to locals and stick to your guns. Just wonder what happened to that German boat in the second example, hope they were OK. I was in Staithes harbour in July and the fisherman told me to leave because of the swell that was going to build up in the night with a strong westerly, so I did even though it was the evening.

A neat trick but I would worry for my winch holding the boat, better than a cleat? Perhaps a messenger on the dock line to the winch and when you have her where you like, cleat the dock line and slip loose the messenger to the winch allowing the cleat and not the winch to hold fast. Or did i misunderstand you?

All your videos are pleasant to watch, as well as informative, thank you. I wonder if you would care to make a video on Jordan Drogues? I have one, have watched a lot of videos and read up on them, but never had to actually use it. It's surprising how few people know about them - a few years ago I asked almost every stallholder company at the Boat Show what they knew, and not one had heard of them, literally. It'd be most interesting to hear your take on them and their best use and deployment, etc. Go' fornøjelse i danmark.

Tom, thanks for your seamanship. My boat, an Island Packet 35 (17000 lbs), and quite heavy lies on a mooring in a tidal river. Every time the tide changes the floating mooring ball bashes and scratches me topsides. What can I do to prevent it? The worst is when there is no wind and the current reverses. During slack tide the ball just keep knocking on the boat and sleep is near impossible. I was wondering if a stern anchor might help or get tangled up. I do have a near full keel and rudder is protected. Thanks. I just ordered your book Yachts and Yarns! Can't wait to get it :-) Be safe.

"Tie up like a farmer"? I am about to leave city/ suburban life (ex-Birmingham Navy) and move into The Boonies. I have for many years scoffed at farmers' disregard for farm machinery and their tendency for poor maintenance and predisposition to just leave stuff lying around from one season to the next. I will add this latested simile to my City-Boy bar-room lexicon as an ice-breaker to stimulate debate and bonhomie. When my body is found, lower me gently over the side.

We sailed into Brighton this year, wind was picking up and a blow was forecast. We worried our way in just after low water when the advice is stay clear 2 hrs each side of low water but we were tired after rough sail from southsea. Made it in and tied up on the visitors pontoon just inside close to the lifeboat station port side to stern pointing out towards the entrance. My wife said let's turn it round so bow will be facing the wind. "we'll do it later" I said. Put my feet up for five minutes. Big mistake. Three days that wind blew waves slapping the stern kept all awake. So now Tom I will take your advice, both bits one line one job. I have a couple of heavy duty lines from a huge princess yacht that left them behind when I was helping to slip her lines when leaving Poole Town Quay. The Princess rep said keep them. So I did. They will now be my heavy weather lines.
