I miss working construction like this some times. Started with a paving crew but also ended up working in the shop on the paver a lot of times or with a pipe crew a time or two. Later on ended up working with my grandfather on a pipe crew and tore out a bridge to put in twin 21ft arch pipe at one point. One of the things we setup for his excavator was an old grader blade with some pockets for the teeth to slip in to. Add a binder with a little chain and his 3 foot wide bucket became a 9 foot wide blade he could reach out and grade the side of a ditch with or get the bottom area on grade when there was only an inch or two to take out. Basically pull it all to one area and then drop the blade and scoop the rest out. Most interesting part was doing the concrete culverts though. We used a felt type cloth that was wrapped around at each joint and the hooked together with hog rings to keep the fill from dropping in. Not long ago where I live now they used concrete culverts and didn't get one of the joints sealed up so when we had a flood the road had a sink hole start to form. The road had only been "finished" for about two months. I am sure that was an expensive mistake.

House builders are the same way, they don't do anything and make all the money. If they do show up they usually stand around all day and watch, once in a blue moon they'll do something easy. We don't call them builders we call them the Money Man, they don't build anything they just get the job or put up the money, but somehow they get all the credit. He would make a lot more money if he started his own company, he basically runs that company anyway. I don't know what is uncle pays him I bet at most $2k a week, I've had quite a few friends over the years that worked for their parents large companies, one company had over 100 employees and they would get paid the same rate or less as every other employee, and a few of them even quite working for there family and got jobs elsewhere because they would always fight like Paul Sr and Paul Jr from Orange County Choppers.
@rajbeekie71244 жыл бұрын

In another life, I worked as a structural designer for an Architectural firm. You would be surprised at the so many times, while surveying job sites, I was told by carpenters that our plans were wrong, that they did'nt measure up to the quotes ! This is long story..I was thinking same thing. When I was a kid I seen a terrible accident down the street from my house. The construction workers were unloading a precast concrete box and the eyelet or something on the concrete snapped and swung into the guy that rigged it and crushed his hips and legs.I can still hear his screams today in my head. Fast forward to when I was 30 and started a new job delivering industrial supplies and pipe. I was at the Port of Wilmington delivering 5" schedule 80 pipe and the deck hands strapped the pipe and just stood there and of course they don't speak english so I jumped on my truck and motioned to them to get off the truck and get away from the truck and as the bundle of pipe is going up and somehow the hook on the crane broke off. So I probly saved their lives or serious injury. Similar incident happened at a different port about 15 years later..I had so many situations where skids collapsed a massive boiler tipped over etc. All because of what I experienced as a kid. There is no reason to be around anything being lifted or moved, you standing there so close looking at it or touching it doesn't do shit, it's fukin heavy and it will kill you or hurt you in a split second.

thought the first unit was run, then rise. so 3 units of run over rise.
@doubledarefan3 жыл бұрын
@@cs2884 I've always heard it as "Rise over run" or "Rise and run". E.g. if a roof has, say, 4:12 slope, it's 4 units of rise over 12 units of run. Maybe it is different outside the architectural world. Or it's a regional thing I'm not aware of.
