How often should I practice Tai Chi? As often as possible. I teach like Master Wong and Jet Li, not like Jake Mace. I teach the Cheng Man Ching Tai Chi Form with some refinements from Huang Sheng Shyan. Yang 37 Short Form. I teach Shaolin Long Fist Kung Fu.

This is why I have spent 25 years training tai ji quan. You have a much lower chance of losing your independence in old age. sounds like a small thing but it's the key to a long and happy life which overshadows any martial application and utility. That's just a nice byproduct. You don't know how valuable being able to move, eat and function is until you lose one of those functions. To share that with others? Wow! What a ggift to give!! Tai ji quan is a wonderful art for anybody to learn. My master's father lived to be 86 and drank and smoke every single day. His father lived to be 90 having lived through communist china and a revolution. My master looks 20 years younger than he really is. This is the real value in tai ji quan - a long, healthy, beautiful happy life.

In my limited experience taiji is quite comprehensive, including strikes, trips, throws, joint "locks", etc. The teacher who taught me the long Yang form told me of an encounter he had with a would be robber at his place of business. As the man reached to grasp or strike him he brushed his arms aside, turned to his outside, and gave him a sharp cuff on the side of the head, and then pushed him on the ribs which sent him (out of control) out the door and to the ground, hard. The guy got up and ran; end of episode. Control of one's own balance, upsetting the other's balance, using the moment to strike, grasp, twist trip, etc. becomes a choice. Sound a lot like jujutsu, judo, wrestling, karate, etc.

Perhaps the old man had only mastered the grappling aspects of Tai Chi Chuan. Or perhaps there was some other reason why he didn't use any strikes. The fact that he was able to bob and weave and evade your punches indicates that he had at least some idea about striking.

Must be there's a reason why the old man didn't go all strike but just grappling and throwing. Might be let just throw him with minimal effort and let gravity do the job? That's sounds likely rather forcing his body to strike?

@@bocahcebol2815 I think he just didn't want to unnecessarily hurt Ramsey, Tai Chi ultimately being a peaceful art. But true Tai Chi is also very powerful, this has been forgotten nowadays.

@@jonathanadler6983 Exactly this. I've been on the receiving end of a skilled practitioner, and it's no joke. The people in the park give it a bad rep.

Because Tai Chi is mostly grappling. And from what Ramsey told us, he knew how to deal with strikes

Time for Ramsey to stop dismissing arts he really knows little to nothing about. This master was far from the only one out there.

The problem is not Ramsey, it's the fact that these masters are super duper rare. Why are so many tai chi "masters" not good at fighting is the problem.

Ageed, there is little actual fighting skill, percentage-wise. In absolute numbers, the picture I suspect is better. However, very few these days train in a way that will build such skill. Perhaps they did at one time.

Taijiquan - Striking think Atemi Waza. It's considered the master class for CMA combat veterans. Refinement of techniques to the highest level. Techniques you have seen and used before in most CMA. Taijiquan was considered the PhD of CMA. Nothing new just focus on efficiency, economy of motion, energy conservation, kinesiology, battle experience. You've done it 1000 x's in combat before, why are you still brute forcing it? Why haven't you tried this angle, etc That is Taijiquan basically. It's the post doc for experienced fighters. The bad rep is from inexperienced fighters thinking that the techniques work without combat conditioning and sparing. Fighting and then necessary mind set. Taijiquan is akin to aikijujutsu or Japanese jujitsu. You've seen used felt all is these techniques before in CMA combat situations. Now refine them and yourself. A Taijiquan sifu told me this back in College (30 years ago) at a guest seminar at our outside training spot. I was training Nam Sil Lam/Hung Gar at the time.

Hawkins Cheung (Bruce Lee's bf in hong kong growing up) was like this, the guy was an amazing wing chun fighter. They show wc as being a distance fighting style in movies like Ip Man, but in truth, wc is a clinch boxing style, so a lot of grappling is in there. Thankfully Hawkins passed down authentic wc before he died, to Sifu Orr, who is one of the only wc teachers who has students who compete in mma, boxing, and sanda and are good fighters.

Taichi is more of a grappling art than a striking art. The fighting distance is actually in between. The art of one touch!

@@ShifuDon Like any kung fu style. In Taichi, there are only a few punches and kicks. All the rest is more about grappling. The forms illustrate that focus. But even striking follows the same process as grappling, we Hua and Na before we Fa. Taichi practitioners don't usually directly strike. We Na first, because then the finishing move can be anything once we Na. Finishing becomes a formality.
