I feel that Peter was always frustrated that he couldn't achieve mainstream success, but he just wasn't a mainstream artist. His music and personality was too intense for the mainstream market.

Mmm, A lot of Peter Tosh music can be considered militant and rebellious a long with his personality, (and that is why he is dubbed the Malcolm X of reggae) but to say that him and his music is not mainstream is a stretch. Peter Tosh was way ahead of his time, this “Woke” society that we now live in today was what Tosh and his music was all about. Back then nobody was ready but look at us today, and after 46 years of the release of the song Apartheid the SA gov. is honoring his contribution to the culture.
@wakazuzu

@@maxieli2809 I edited my comment below because I realised I was confused about an incident. It was actually involving The Wailers and Lee Perry. Peter was becoming angry about not being paid properly and in an altercation with Lee Perry, Perry had instructed his wife to fetch the bowl of acid, as a threat. This was from a Bunny Wailer interview, and I had remembered it incorrectly. Anyway, Peter's behaviour such as trying to steal Keith Richard's house, threatening him with a gun, these kind of things probably prevented him from advancing in his career. I love him and it is this uncompromising attitude that sets him apart and why he was such a hero to a lot of his peers.

Peter Tosh’s Live in Boston 1976 Album is raw high level syncopated masterful instrumentation at its finest, with all those crazy over the top percussive guitar scratches, and featuring Sly and Robbie holding it down, I’ve found Peter Tosh’s later Live music sadly lacking in this regard as his music lost all of its raw mesmerizing Band of Gypsy’s Hendrix type of vibe and feel it lulls the listener to escape into. Eventually Sly and Robbie moved on from Tosh’s Word, Power and Sound band over to Gregory Isaacs and Black Uhuru. Sadly what what it had been Peter Tosh’s later live music regressed and fell off into absurdity, overfull of the all the unhip synth circus sounds, but before any that Peter Tosh’s band was really sending it, at the Jamaican One Love Concert mentioned here that stole, and dangerously ranted at, but Tosh Band really really got serious with Reggae as an astounding art form live at in Boston in 1976…8)

Saw the Stones in 1978 and Peter Tosh was one of the warmup acts. He was great. Journey was the last warmup act and they had their sound system sabotaged so that they sounded so bad that they would not upstage the Stones, who came out to a prime sound system. Anyway based on this video, Peter and the Stones were still in good relations. Great musicians are notorious for not getting along, and also for not always having good PR skills, so some of this doesn't surprise me. But I liked Peter Tosh and the Stones very much.

You were fortunate my friend. The first time this then teenager saw The Stones 1978 in New Orleans: The always great Doobie Brothers opened . Then at least an hour and a half later to everyone's confusion an acrobat came onstage and performed for 20 minutes Nearly two hours later a completely unknown band (so new they their name was mispronounced by the PA announcer) "Van Halen" took the stage playing their first album in its entirety and proceeded to floor everyone for 45 minutes Over TWO HOURS after THAT The Stones FINALLY came on. And were fantastic! All was forgiven. It was the '78 Some Girls Tour. One of my favorite albums and what many consider their last truly great cover to cover album.

I am a big Tosh-and Marley AND Stones fan. I was a freshman in HS when my best friend’s older brother got back from 4 years on an nuclear submarine stationed in Hawaii-1977-and he turned us on to reggae with his Marley albums. I never got to see anyone but the Stones (in 82, 89, and 2005) I wonder if Peter hadn’t spent so much time-wasn’t it over a decade?-playing with Bob and instead, gone solo sooner, if he wouldn’t have gotten much bigger? I think about the Stones career and how they went from a “cover band” in the early sixties, and by the time Peter struck off on his solo career in the mid-70s, they were legit mega-stars with their 4 (imo) best albums Beggars Banquet, Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers, and Exile on Main Street all recorded before Peter left The Wailers. Who knows. I’m just rambling. I sure wish he and Bob were still with us. 🤘🏼❤️

The Rolling Stones were listening to and use to be hanger ons in Britain, during a earlier genre of Jamaican musical evolution known as Ska. They were well acquainted with Jamaican music actually before Bob Marley and the Wailers were introduced to the British audience. Surprise, surprise, there are pioneers of the genre who were introduced to the British prior to Bob Marley and the Wailers. Such pioneers did not receive the financial prominence as later acts such as Bob Marley.

Peter, Bunny, and Bob, matured as songwriters, musicians, singers, and entertainers in that decade they spent together. Each pushed the others to greatness. I don’t think it was wasted years. Everyone’s timing is different. Peter’s sound is critically acclaimed, but might not have mass appeal. Women are probably the largest consumers of mainstream music and they buy the records. How many women worldwide would actually buy a Peter Tosh record? I’ve barely ever met an ardent female Peter Tosh fan! But I’m sure they exist. I just don’t see how Peter Tosh could ever have achieved Bob Marley’s level of fame-even after both had passed. The mainstream loves Bob Marley, as do women. The mainstream loves the Stones and Led Zeppelin, and we know that the women definitely love them!

There is no denying, Mick Jagger is a cut throat business man.. That is why The Rolling Stones are rich, beyond anyones wildest dreams. Even Keith Richards appreciates and respects the fact that Mick was the financial genius in the band... If they did do Peter over, it's a black mark on their souls, to take advantage of a man who they could have helped, who they could have raised up, at no cost to themselves. That would have been the best way to conduct themselves, personally and professionally.

The stones got royally fucked over by Klein so they made a minimal amount of money from their sixties catalogue .It was only when they went to their own label that they made decent royalties.Rupert Loewenstein made their money for them ,he was their financial advisor from 68-08 (a Bavarian Prince) That’s why the Stones focussed on touring so much ,to reap the most money as royalties were minimal.

I have read and heard many stories of how the bands often make chit even with several hits and successful tours. I recall an interview of the band Collective Soul back when they had several hits in the early to mid 90s. Basically, they were broke even though their songs were constantly played on MTV and the radio with successful tours. When a band would get their first record contract, they would have very little leverage to ink a good deal. Its either sell your soul to the label or continue to play in small bars while holding a day job. They are often stuck in that contract for a few years and albums before they can negotiate a new better deal. But most bands to not stay in mainstream very long so once they have fulfilled their original contract, their time and fame had passed. Groups like the Stones were so popular for so long they were able to make a ton of cash. But bands like Collective Soul's mainstream days had past. It's a dirty business where only a few have longevity to make good bank. And today, there are not good record deals. People do not buy albums. It's all streaming so you must constantly tour and become commercialized promoting things like soft drinks, clothes, etc... to get rich performing music.

If you read about Peter Tosh's relationship with Bob Marley you understand just how jealous and driven he was to be as big a star as Bob was. He felt marginalized by Marley's titanic success and felt that the Stones would make him as big a star. Obviously, he didn't deal well with it when it didn't happen. Reality was, while he was certainly a great and unique talent in his own right he still wasn't the songwriter Bob was, and his music didn't have the mainstream crossover appeal that Bob's did, something that his ego couldn't accept. The Stones actually did help his career tremendously, to stand in their spotlight was a huge boost to his career but he didn't seem to appreciate it like he should have. Music fans are fikkle, not everybody can be a superstar but Tosh still had more success and fame than most musicians ever experience. Except for the money issue, which may have been the records company, not the Stones themselves, I don't see how the Stones could be blamed for anything, they obviously admired Peter and gave his career a great shot in the arm, something they didn't have to do.

That mainstream crossover appeal was exclusively manufactured by the hand of Chris Whitewell under certain terms and conditions that not everybody accepted, that's why not only Peter, but Bunny too, decided to stay away from that mainstream adaptation of their music and message. And if you're into real reggae, not only in what the western media exported, you'll know that Bob was very good, but there were many others at the same or even higher level of composing and songwriting music.

What an excellent report, thank you! I started listening to the music of Marley and found the beauty of Tosh... and now I realise that I have far more Tosh albums than Marley's. I never understood why Peter got so involved with the Stones... they seem to change their flavour every album, whereas Tosh was solid and consistent. P.S. To this day that chicken strut of Mick's still looks ridiculous.

So if I've got this right: 1. The Stones put him on their label, boosting Tosh's recognition beyond Jamaica and reggae. 2. Jagger collaborates on a single that breaks new ground for Tosh. 3. The Stones let Tosh be the opening act on a world tour, exposing him to hundreds of thousands of fans. 4. Jagger performs with Tosh on SNL 5. His album sales increase exponentially and he has sold out shows. But some how the label isn't supporting him enough? How can he argue that there hadn't been much improvement in his "international visibility" when he was touring with the Stones and exposed to fans all over the world? The video tells us he had increased sales and sold out shows. What did he expect? Peter was no Bob Marley, so comparing him to Bob is crazy. Bob was a cross-over artist and Peter complains that his label is trying to make his music more commercial? He complains about the very thing that made Marley an international superstar. And rather than deal with payment issues with lawyers and accountants, Tosh instead threatens to "deal with the Stones," confronting Jagger in a studio and trashing Richards' house that he had graciously let Tosh use to write some new songs? Peter never met a person he couldn't fight with--from the Wailers, Island records, Jamaican politicians, and the Stones.

It's kind of weird, to me, that I never heard any of this at the time, or since, until just now. Seems to me that musicians starting their own labels are very often not the right people to be running a label, and the mistakes they make often cause people they're supposed to be working with to get screwed over. I'm not saying it's all, or even most, but it's a common enough problem that I tend to be a bit skeptical when a famous musician starts a label. I definitely need a lot more Peter Tosh music in my collection. More reggae in general would help, but I can't afford to buy much right now, so I'll have to wait until money isn't so tight.

I hope one day my people realize when artist like themselves talk about having their own labels, that it’s false advertisement. An Artist cannot pay another Artist because the parent company (the Boss) has the money. The Artist has no money, all they have is fame (which they are already born with). The parent company give their Artist an illusion of a label, to bring bodies to them, to enslave them and literally offer them as blood/human sacrifices. I just hope one day my people understand the concept of an unrighteous system that wasn’t designed for us and to stop signing these blood contracts with the enemy. All Peter did was leave one demon (Island Records) hoping that the other demons (Atlantic Records/The Rolling Stones) was gonna offer something better. They are all demons, they all have the same deal(s), which leads to death.

@@ssliburd1 I've been in the music business for 4 decades. I know exactly how publishing and record deals work. I also personally know famous people who are rich and some who are not. The ones who are not were not songwriters. Being a writer has nothing to do with record labels. Of course there are cases< especially in Jamaica, of people being completely ripped off, but that was often by their managers. Also in the US and UK people signed terrible contracts with labels that locked them in to a kind of slavery but that has nothing to do with publishing and royalties. There are countless people who make a very very good living from writing songs for other people who nobody has ever heard of. The guy who wrote Thriller and other hits for Michael Jackson lived in a mansion in Beverly Hills and had a castle in Germany lol. I know people that had one hit album in the 80's or 90's and are still living off the royalties. You obviously have no idea how much money a songwriter makes from royalties for a world wide number 1 single or album. You also have no idea how much money people like The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Elton John or Beyonce make for each gig on a world tour.
@ssliburd1
@ssliburd1 Жыл бұрын
@@NoLefTurnUnStoned. it don’t matter how much money the media “claim” they make on tour, if they are in debt with a never ending balance due to the record company. When the record label need back their money, they send them out on tour as slaves to get back that money for them. All of these quote on quote multimillionaires entertainers/actors you speak of does not write their own songs. They don’t promote or push down your throats songwriters, they push the puppets or the enslaved down our throats with the illusion like these people are rich when they are not. And these same songwriters you speak of, are signed or in contract to these same record labels. Songwriters songs only make hits because they are signed to Big name labels, ain’t no unsigned songwriter song making a hit. In other words that song is only a hit because you are in bed with a Major, and they can employ their witches/warlock to cast spells over the music to make hits. So because I live in a mansion, it means I’m rich? Lol. If that mansion or car isn’t paid off for, it just means that person is in a lot of debt. Lastly people get into Music thinking it’s just Music not realizing it’s a BUSINESS and you are not getting on Satan’s stage as an unsigned artist. He likes to use the gifts that the The Most High blesses his creation with to make merchandise. And he ain’t doing it unless you get in that blood contract with him.

Dude are you tripping? Your people do have labels. For example, Barry Gordy signed on many acts for as little money as possible and retained all rights to the music written under those contracts and his brand. He was focused on what's in the best interest of himself and his business. A lot of the people and artists associated with Motown didn't get the kind of money a lot people think they did. I don't know if Barry Gordy had artists sign blood contracts or did any sacrifices, but he made his money first. It's just a cut throat industry no matter where you go.

In response to the comment below about Peter’s alleged jealousy of Bob’s success, this is not true. Peter was a hugely talented musician who taught Bob, Bunny and other musicians to play musical instruments. He was also a formidable song writer and stage performer which Mick Jagger realised at the One Love peace concert. There was no jealousy, Peter and Bunny were justly frustrated about the way the breakup of the Wailers was agreed behind their backs. You have to put this in the context of these three young men who lived and operated on the basis of all for one and one for all, throughout the previous years of their journey to being acclaimed musicians and singers. Every decision was jointly made between them, yet Marley had no hesitation in reaching an agreement about the future of the band with Chris Blackwell, while the other two members of the band were excluded from this decision-making process. The second problem is Bob's desire to always sing his songs and be the lead singer, even when a song was written or co-written with Marley. All Peter wanted was his fair share of exposure. I listened to an interview with Peter and the question about musical rivalry was put to Peter who replied that 'there were many flowers in Jah’s Garden, each contributes to the beauty of the garden. The point that many people conveniently forget is that Peter had a strong commitment to speaking up about the never-ending oppression and injustices of the poor man and woman in Jamaica, Africa and the world, therefore his lyrics would be different and, in many respects, far more hard hitting that Marley's and he made no apology about this. Here is an example of this contrast - Peter sings 'I don't want no peace, I want equal rights and justice', This was a profound statement, anyone could promise peace, but if you remain oppressed, empty promises about peace does not mean anything. This is in contrast to Marley's One Love for example where the same people who continue to oppress other are singing one love. It is therefore inevitable that these two artists would have different fans, so with good marketing Peter would have his share of the market and Bob his share, different flowers in Jah's garden. Peter was recently honoured by South Africa (2023) for his immense contribution to South Africa's fight for freedom, Yet he is frequently being put down in his own country.
