I had an experience living in Jakarta Indonesia and I cannot quite decide how to categorize it: Racist, Elitist or plain old rudeness. Tell me what you think in the comment section. Quiet frankly I am not sure where to categorize this experience or how to title it properly: Racist in Indonesia or Elitist in Indonesia?

Based on my experience and based on what some indonesian friends told me, most of indonesian (especially those who can't speak English), really afraid of having any INTERACTION with non Bahasa Indonesian and non local language speaker. I remember some friends told me when they had a trip in a rural area somewhere in Sumatera, they were about to approach some local who's sitting around to ask for direction, but the moment they saw foreigners approached them they kinda run away. 😂 So, I don't think it's a racism though.

Hey gorgeous, I'm Indonesian. Honestly I think it wasn't racism, but purely just a misunderstanding. I too have been ignored by locals several times when I speak slowly, only when I speak louder they would be like "ohhh so you were talking to me?". From your story I think he just didn't speak English or understood what you were trying to do, especially you kept saying "permisi" but not saying anything else. That's why when you said his attitude changed the minute he saw your driver and started smiling to you I think it finally registered to him, "oh so this foreign lady was looking for her driver, okay, I understand now" 😅

Hi sweetie , here is something that i want to tell you : first of all Papua Nugini is not a part of indonesia . But Papua is a part of indonesia . I’m sorry for what happened , you might be some sort of ignored. But you know it’s more like personal experience . This is just a part of the traveling / visiting experience. You can’t just wanting them to actually answer , that’s one of the thing that you need to think before going to any country , you can’t really say it’s racist , because you only asked some people there . Except they’re (the same people) being nice to other tourist but not to you , but that’s not what happened And it’s probably fine not wanting to answer, they’re maybe busy or confused . Cause you see not all people there can understand you , some of them afraid that they will do something wrong or hurt your feeling because they can’t understand you . I can’t really say what he meant but i hope you can forgive him . Whether he meant to be racist or just don’t know what to do . He might not be as good as you think but there are a lot of other good people in indonesia. Just remember there are still more good people there in Indonesia. And don’t treat people the way you don’t wanna be treated . If you know that pointing is bad , you shouldn’t have done it then . Perhaps you can learn from this experience ,maybe you can get a tour guide or something . To prevent this thing to happen in the future . By that you can’t really say that Indonesia is a really racist country, Indonesia have many various of face , culture , religion and race . you need to give that fact in this vid , and the fact that a lot of people in the comment start to hate indonesia just by watching this vid broke my heart . If you visit this one place and getting a bad experience try to search more about it . I hope you can read this . I hope you can clarify or say something about indonesian’s good side . They’re really friendly and to visit indonesia and have a stay is really affordable. Ok then perhaps you can take my advice ,have a nice day

“Permisi” means excuse me. That means u wanna go pass him. It also depends on how u pronounce and say it. If you wanna ask something to someone you better say or continue to say “maaf pak/mbak saya ingin bertanya” (I’m sorry sir/miss, I want to ask something) instead, because it’s more common to be use. And we are sometimes can be confused too because of the pronounciation. There could be misunderstood

Maybe in your country, you don't have rude people. I've seen your other video, somehow pointing out Indonesia is a racist country. Don't generalize all nations, just because some idiots being rude. When you live in another country, try to learn the culture, the language, and respect the law and the people. Try to be friendly with the people and smile. Indonesians are kind and friendly. Indonesia is a multiethnic country, we are all different, we even speak different languages, we don't care if you are blue, red, yellow, or purple. By the way, pointing your finger at someone's face is also rude and disrespectful, the same as the man ignoring you. And Papua New Guinea is a country, it's not Indonesia. West Papua is Indonesia.

Listened to you and wasted his time? It was your mistake, you got ashamed, yet you mocked the man by pointing him and said that he's bad, now who's being racist? I consider this story was a kind of misunderstanding. On the one hand, you can't speak the Indonesian language, on the other hand, the security officer doesn't understand English. Actually, this is one of the characters of Indonesians. Especially those who are not highly educated. When they meet a foreigner and are not confident in speaking English, they choose to avoid it. They're not avoiding you, they're just scared because of their limited capacity in English. I guarantee you that they had never think about your skin color or your status or your background. If you ask someone who can speak English, I'm sure you'll get better treatment. However, as an Indonesian, I apologize for any inconveniences you experienced and thank you for staying in Indonesia.

It’s not because of your skin. We even have Javanese people with darker skin than yours. The fact that a car pick you up definitely got something to do with the Bapak sudden change in his mannerism. It’s more like when you don’t dress up and you enter a fancy store and the shopkeeper does not even bother to greet you, but the next time you go to that store again with shopping bags, all dressed-up, and the shopkeeper is treating you super nice. @@theresiajoku3759 uhm... ok but you know, if you go here in western Indonesia, javanese is known as the darker tribe. Ask any sundanese, minang, or palembang... and they will say that javanese are darker than them. Some racist even mocked javanese as tikus item alias tiko. Tak percaya? Sila google tiko dan kamu akan tau bahwa orang jawa diejek karena kulitnya hitam. There's stereotype in western Indonesia that darker skin mean poor and it may affect papuan. But saying that javanese discriminate the dark tribe is weird. Have you ever met some javanese Kuli (construction worker)? Have you ever met some javanese farmer? They can be as dark as african. And it's ironic considering that other western indonesian tribe often think they are way more beautiful than javanese bcs javanese are brown sawo matang. Most of the time, we just dont like separatist. Not any tribe with dark skin.

I'm so sorry to hear that you are being bullied because of you skin colour. Unfortinately, I also observed in Indonesia that the standards of beauty tend more towards "whiter is better" which is quiet sad. It's all about cultural perception for example in Northern European countries having being brown or having a tan is considered cool, beautiful and healthy because it indicates that you spend more time outdoors and enjoy the sun. This is why you see people lying in the sun for hours or going to tanning salons. So next time someone makes you feel bad for your "browness" remember some people somewhere else in the world are actually spending lots of money to look like you. 😊

Your English is not bad. 😊 I understood you perfectly. Unfortunately the standard of beauty in many countries still tends towards Eurocentricness. However, thanks to gradually improving representation in the media, we are beginning to see that there are different types of beauty and no one is better than the other 😊

I think your experience in Medan, was that people was confuse or shocked by what he see..there is not usual to see african people in there except jakarta or bali, seeing african people in medan it just rare, which have physically different with them...its not racism, it just shock culture in my opinion. if that is racidm, so then we need to know what the definitions of racism it self...once again it just my opinion.
