I am a van lifer. I live in my van full time and travel across the country documenting my travels in my van life travel vlog and also teaching people how to do what I did.
In this video, you'll get an inside look when things go wrong in van life: when I had to call the 911 emergency responders to my van in the middle of the night. I was terrified and scared for my life.
This is just one example of why it's so important not to be afraid of asking for help when you need it especially us independent types.

★ My Story
Hi, I'm Amber and in May 2017 I started full time RV living. I started this nomadic journey after selling my house and all my belongings to pursue this crazy dream of traveling full time in an RV and creating incredible memories.
After 1 year of traveling, I sold my 26 foot Winnebago Class C RV for a more nimble Class B van on a Promaster 2500 chassis. Now in my 4th year of RVing in my camper van, I'm still loving this RV lifestyle and being a digital nomad. I almost always boondock in nature and really enjoy that off grid living.

I spent years as a paramedic and I say with confidence that your 911 call was TOTALLY APPROPRIATE! Do not hesitate to call when your instinct tells you to! Also, ambulances charge for transports to the hospital not for responding. I will be stunned if they bill you. A very similar thing happened to me and my symptoms disappeared as soon as I got to the hospital - it was a kidney stone that passed on it's own!

Rob, I did the same, she should not feel badly she called 911, I had patient that was standing at the door, with hat and coat on, and suitcase packet, this was in the middle of the night, just needed a ride to the hospital. as a pharmacist, stomach contractions can be felt in your shoulders and back, it is the nerves that react to this, I have had this happen to me. so it was a good thing that you did call.

I must have called 911 for my diabetic husband 30 times (at least). In some cases he was taken to the hospital., and other times he was cleared to stay home and recover. At no time did we p[ay a penny for this service. I always thought it was tax-supported. BTW, I don't think anyone has mentioned anxiety attacks or panic attacks. I get them , occasionally, with almost the same symptoms. They may take up to an hour to subside, but most are ,much shorter. But they can be very scary! So glad it was only gas!

My take is that you are a very smart woman who follows her gut, intuitions & instincts. You do it daily. Unfortunately with an experimental vaccine we will hear of different types of adverse reactions, throughout different sexes, & age groups. 🤷‍♂️ Personally, this is what gives me caution about these vaccines. Particularly this rushed short trial vaccine. Anyway, More the reason not to question your own internal personal messages 😉. I Love your spirit, and your straight-up honest advice that you give through your travels. Your minor embarrassment through this ordeal has the potential to save someone else’s life. Thx for sharing this particular video.

You did the right thing. Think it was the perfect storm, who knows if it was the vaccine, but they are still discovering info about them daily. So glad you got your vaccine, hope the non- believers don’t say thats another reason not to get vaccine. Think the soda and bread could have been contributors, soda could have precipitated GERD symptoms, If you have not eaten bread in a while, could have been too much on your system, maybe you have a little gluten intolerance. Plus, subs are a lot of bread even with the 6 inch Subway. I don’t have gluten intolerance that I know of, but I don’t eat much bread. However, sometimes I feel nauseated after eating it or even smelling it, especially when it is baking in the grocery. I would definitely get it all checked out, avoid carbonated drinks and limit bread intake. The differentials in my opinion are gallbladder, can be sludge, slow motility of GB, inflammation or stones. Also, appendix and GERD. I would really watch your diet closely. Women don’t have typical cardiac symptoms than men as you know, but they would definitely want to make sure it is not heart related. Do not feel embarrassed, you did the right thing, completely. Just check it out before you are too remote to get help as quickly as you received. Glad you are safe. BTW, I loved the Born Free built for 2 video. I test drove one about 5-6 yrs ago after my husband died, was too soon to make the purchase. Now I wish I had done it since I am looking for one and the small ones are hard to find. Thank you and feel better.

Wow! That has happened to me twice and it was gas. I never knew how much it could hurt. I was on the floor moaning, nauseous and clammy. Thankfully, I was at home the first time and just fought through it. The second time, I was at a B&B with friends and it happened in the middle of the night when everyone else was asleep. I would have called 911 if I hadn't been with other people. You most certainly did the right thing! Its scary!!

Yep, me too. Was misdiagnosed twice - once at the emergency room and again at an after hours clinic who thought it was pleurisy. After third attack made an appointment with a doctor who immediately suspected what it was and sent me for a sonogram. I'm amazed how many health professionals misdiagnose gallbladder attacks. These are classic symptoms. When Amber said she started feeling clammy and sweaty, I suspected that is what happened. After a while the pain goes away and you feel fine.

Yeah, gall bladder was my first thought as well. Extremely painful and scary, difficult to breathe, feeling like you're going to pass out, then over as abruptly as it began. You can get an ultrasound to check for gallstones, and you don't have to believe the doctors when they tell you that you need to have your gall bladder removed. My own case was so severe that I was hospitalized for a week. Instead of surgery, I went to a practitioner of Chinese medicine who treated me with acupuncture and herbs. The upshot is that I still have my gall bladder and have been symptom free for the past twenty years. I don't even get indigestion.

That was my exact thought also. My wife has had her gall bladder removed (Don't do this unless diet changes or medication don't work) I have had several gall bladder attacks until I finally figured out what was bringing them on. For me it was high glutton content foods on an empty stomach. My first attack was in a mall and I was very hungry but didn't have time for a full meal. So I bought one of those giant salty pretzels and was eating it on my way out of the mall, before I reached my exit I was already doubled over in pain and thought I was having a heart attack. Today I still have my gall bladder but I'm a lot more conscious about eating foods with high glutton content. I'm sure that there are other foods that can cause an attack if your gall bladder is not functioning at 100%, mine tested at less than 40%, but it was the gluttons that seemed to cause my problems.

He refused to listen to me and took me to the emergency room. Im in my 60's. thought I was in good health. I now have a pace maker. If something is strange or different, all embarrassing thinking is out, your life is more important. Love your videos, please take care of your self. Enjoy your story Mary

You did the right thing. I have those fears also. Even though I travel with my husband he can’t see (or hear) so I feel, rightfully so, alone. We have left camp sites earlier than planned because I started feeling bad. It is a scary situation. I love your videos and admire your independence.

Oh my gosh! You ABSOLUTELY did the right thing and do not be embarrassed! Our neighbor died of a sudden heart attack in December. He was 35 and totally healthy but for an unknown heart issue. Thanks for your vulnerability in showing just the normal things in life. Most importantly continue to listen to your body. Don’t let this experience ever deter you in the future for reaching out for help. So thankful it was not more serious. God Bless.

Amber, I was a Paramedic for 30 years and you have absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about! Never be embarrassed of caring for your health! Over the years I know I could have saved many people had they only called us earlier! Many serious emergency responses have been delayed and have had poor outcomes by people denying their symptoms! Be proud of yourself for teaching your viewers that if your instincts tell you to call for help then just call!!!! If fear sets in as to something happening with your body, it’s time to call without hesitation!! Take care Amber! I wish I could give you a big hug and pat on the back for loving yourself and sharing this with us!

I'm so glad you are OK. Don't beat yourself up so bad. I woke up one morning with stomach pains. I thought it was either muscle strain or gas, within a couple of hours it localized to my side. I decided to go to the emergency room. The whole time I kept thinking how embarrassed I would be if it was just gas. Turned out it was appendicitis. The funny side is what the doctor said; "Every one on the planet has a 50/50 chance of getting it, but 100 percent it will never happen again because it must come out." It is ALWAYS better to be safe rather than sorry. This is why you are such an inspiration. You are so real. Love to you and Lily.

Amber, there is no need for embarrassment. Our bodies are marvelous machines that sometimes do very strange and scary things. We get accustomed to our bodies working a certain way and then they surprise us; sometimes painfully. Pain tells us there's trouble. You did EXACTLY the right thing. I can't say it enough.

You did the right thing to call. My relative had that same pain a couple years ago, all night long, all morning, keep thinking it was gas and she would be so embarrassed if she went to the hospital and it was just gas. Called me at noon, I said that sounds like appendicitis, she said no it’s better now. Called me 4 hours later asking to go to hospital. It was her appendix and it had already ruptured because she waited so long because she didn’t want to be embarrassed. Not only gave up her appendix but about 8” of her colon because it was damaged by that time. Two years later and she still isn’t totally back to normal. So you did the right thing to be safe, don’t be embarrassed and I’m glad you’re ok!

I had a similar experience several months ago. I woke up at 2:00 am with pain in the center of my chest, below my breast bone, and feeling clammy. I live alone and was so scared I might be having a heart attack. I took aspirin but got no relief. After several hours, I finally called 9-1-1 for help. They did an EKG, twice (that must be protocol), and eventually encouraged me to let them take me to the ER. After several hours of waiting and multiple blood tests, I was told there was no heart attack and that I should follow up with my regular doctor. She thought it could be acid reflux and prescribed medication for that. I’ve had a couple of milder episodes since then, but nothing like those terrifying four or more hours that night. You absolutely did the right thing by calling for help. As embarrassing as it seems at the time, you never know when things will go terribly wrong.

Amber, that was a good call . You can never be too safe, especially being solo. I had those same symptoms in 2019. Thought it was my heart and then gas. Turns out it was my gallbladder. The attacks started for short durations. The third one, several weeks later, lasted over an hour and I went to the ER. Got a GI work up and found it was gallbladder. I would encourage you to get a GI evaluation. Love your videos. Stay safe and keep living your best life.

Sweetie, I am not an expert in health care, but I have personally experienced gall stones that blocked my bile duct, kidney stones, a panic attack, gastroenteritis, diverticulosis, and a heart attack. The pain from each was so intense, and I could not even tell exactly where it centered in some of these. YOU MADE THE RIGHT DECISION AND DID ALL THE RIGHT THINGS! YOU HAVE NO REASON TO BE EMBARRASSED! A bill is nothing in a medical emergency that could have put your life at risk. LOVE YOU!💜

Glad you got checked out! There’s no reason to be embarrassed. When you see the doctor you might ask about celiac disease. If you haven’t had bread (wheat) in a while, the symptoms you described could be because of eating bread. That is what happens to me if I get gluten by mistake. Also, like others have said, a gallbladder attack (either inflammation or a stone) can be very painful as well. I know a lot of people who had some significant digestive issues after the second Covid vaccine too, including me! Hope you are still feeling better!

Always call 911 with the symptoms you were experiencing. I’m a nurse and a cardiac patient. I had very similar symptoms last week and called 911. I was thinking it may be indigestion or gas as well at first. Unfortunately, I did have a heart attack. Always treat like heart FIRST and if it turns out to be gas, that’s wonderful. You definitely did the right thing in calling 911.

Amber, you did the right thing. On May 25, 2017, I had an incident similar to yours, and I waited 10 hours to call 911. It turned out I had had a massive heart attack, and I had to have two operations, including a quadruple bypass. I was extremely lucky to survive (My cardiologist said I was "circling the drain.") Don't worry about calling 911. I apologized for calling a paramedic a few weeks later when I thought I was having another heart attack, and he said that it's common for men to not call and it's why so many die young. It wasn't a heart attack, but my tests were bad enough that I did have to stay in the hospital for an extra day. And do see a doctor. BTW, I just started following your channel last night. Happy 50th birthday and happy travels!

I wanted to cry before you even told the story. I’m so sorry you went through that but I’m sooo happy it turned out well. I see so many nomad videos where the creator shares “the bad with the good” yet I’ve never seen a video with medical emergency content. On the one hand, that may be a good thing that nomads don’t experience medical emergencies. Especially, if they’re solo nomads or nomads with pets. Don’t worry about not producing ambulance footage for this video. Thank God you’re ok. Please stay safe. Also, “noting” camp and camp spot info and having it easily accessible was an awesome tip. Sending you a great BIG hug, Amber.

Also, those of us that have fur kids, think about a way to secure them before emergency services arrive.
